(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem-Keizer Transit has taken another step to help reduce the world's carbon footprint. After a two year test of the product, the maintenance department has begun using Eco Ultra Premium re-refined lube oil in its diesel fleet. Why is this important? The United States produces approximately 1.3 billion gallons of used oil each year. The Environmental Protection Agency states that by re-refining its used oil, the nation would save between 1.3 and 2.5 million gallons a day. Closer to home, Cherriots utilizes approximately 2,400 gallons of lube oil in its diesel fleet. By switching to Eco Ultra Premium oil, Cherriots will save 4,800 drums of imported or domestic crude oil. The re-refined oil is also less expensive than the oil currently purchased, costing $.31 per gallon less. "The change to Eco Ultra Premium supports our sustainability initiative and benefits the bottom line," said Gregg Thompson, Salem-Keizer Transit Maintenance Manager. Re-refining oil takes up to 89 percent less energy than refining crude oil. Re-refined oil produces an earth-friendly 65 percent decrease in harmful emissions. "This project is a great example of the sustainable culture of our organization," said general manager Allan Pollock. "At Salem-Keizer Transit, we examine our day-to-day procedures to incorporate environmentally-friendly practices wherever possible." Source: Salem-Keizer Transit
