(KEIZER, Ore.) - He may only be 14-years old, but B.J. Delgado is responsible for his family being alive. B.J. was presented the Bob Wickman Lifesaving Award by the Keizer Fire District this week. The presentation was made at the beginning of the July meeting of the Keizer Fire District Board of Directors. Keizer Fire Spokesman Jim Trett says on June 18th 2009, B.J. Delgado was awakened at 2:15 a.m. in the morning to the sound of a smoke alarm sounding. "Upon entering the bedroom of his ten and six-year old sisters he discovered a fire burning with smoke from the ceiling almost to the floor." Trett says Mr. Delgado observed his ten-year old sister waking up and his six-year old sister still asleep in her top bunk bed. "Mr. Delgado made sure the older sister evacuated the structure while picking up his still sleeping six-year old sister and carrying her out of the home." Then B.J. Delgado re-entered the home to wake up his mother and two-year old sister so they too could evacuate the residence. Keizer Fire District Fire Marshal Joel Stein has credited B.J. Delgado with saving the life of his six-year old sister and may have very well saved the other members of his family with his heroic actions. The Bob Wickman Lifesaving award is the highest honor the Keizer Fire District can bestow on a person for their efforts to save another's life. The presentation will be made at the beginning of the Fire District's monthly Board of Directors meeting.
