Jul-22-2009 23:15TweetFollow @OregonNews FOX News: A Cowardly Talking Head & Treasonous Anti-American Crap (VIDEO)Opinion by Tim King Salem-News.com"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, And the women come out to cut up what remains, Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains An' go to your Gawd like a soldier." -"Young British Soldier" by Rudyard Kipling
(SALEM, Ore.) - A talking head at FOX news says that it is OK for our enemy, the Taliban, to kill a fellow American. "Fox News Analyst" Lt. Col. Ralph Peters is an apparent Taliban sympathizer, and a regular on-air personality at America's most polarizing, politically skewed, and outright dishonest TV network. Most Americans know by now that a U.S. Army soldier named Bowe R. Bergdahl of Idaho, who is 23-years old, was captured in Afghanistan and fell into the hands of the Taliban. This should be a matter of grave concern for all Americans and millions are rallying for Bergdahl's safe return. But Peters and FOX, both staunch supporters of far right politics and vocal proponents of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, are trying to throw this young man under the train. The network and their talking head are putting a ball into motion, trying to do what America always has done before when the politics of POW's didn't match the occasion. In this case, suggesting he may have deserted. Like Marine Pfc Bobby Garwood, the last POW to emerge from Vietnam in 1979, the machine is preparing to grind this man under its heel, if it can. I suspect my fellow Americans might really bail out of the FOX viewership over this one. If this insolent wicked little man named Peters at FOX manages to turn people against this American who volunteered to serve in the military, fully aware that almost anyone in the Army can be deployed overseas, he should be arrested and tossed in prison. When does FOX News cross the line? This is a new age, a new time, and there is no way in Hell that Peters or FOX can cry "free speech" now. Treason and FOX News This "Fox News Analyst" has been quick in placing doubt on the motives of Pfc. Bergdahl, calling him an "apparent deserter". In reading about this instigator, I find no indication of his ever even having served in a war theater. He seems to be some kind a "military intelligence" officer - nothing less than the biggest oxymoron in the world, and an expert on the Soviet Union. While Peters was busy "studying" the Soviet Union, the Afghan Mujahideen defeated that evil regime at war, and propelled its downward spiral right out of existence. Nowhere in his background is Afghanistan even mentioned. Peters joined the Army in 1971 and served until 1998. He missed Vietnam, and even apparently managed to avoid Kuwait in the first Gulf War. But here is is, working for FOX, the worst of all TV networks, a pure joke among truthful people, and spewing his poison toward a young, captive American soldier. I just can't believe it. Here is what Ralph Peters said about American POW, Army Pfc Bowe Bergdahl: "If, when the facts are in, we find out that through some convoluted chain of events that (Bergdahl) really was captured by the Taliban, I'm with him. But if he walked away from his post and his buddies in wartime, I don't care how hard it sounds, as far as I'm concerned, the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and legal bills." Repeating History: Marine Robert Garwood In 1979, when the last POW unexpectedly returned from Vietnam with stories about other American POW's still alive, Republican Senator John McCain went slightly ballistic and did everything he could to discredit a man who had been taken captive and held for an incredibly long 14 years. The story of Marine Pfc Robert Garwood, the first Marine captured in the war and the last POW to leave Vietnam, is a sad and twisted tale that most of us will never know the full truth about. Senator John McCain, who also spent years as a prisoner of the Vietnamese during the war, turned on Garwood with a vengeance when he finally came home. One problem that stands out like a sore thumb, is the CIA's exposure of one of McCain's witnesses against Garwood, as a person who actually did work with the Viet Cong. Marine Pfc Bobby Garwood went missing in September 1965, a time before tensions over the Vietnam War went out of control in the United States. He was a jeep driver who traveled through many places in his sector of Vietnam and he was the first Marine to be captured in the Vietnam war. He would ultimately be accused of "going to the other side" and actually joining forces with the North Vietnamese. Accounts from other POW's who saw Garwood in captivity vary greatly. Some say he was working closely with the enemy, while others described his appearance in captivity as deplorable and emaciated, resembling a prisoner in a WWII concentration camp. If Garwood conspired with the enemy as charged, then McCain and every other person who fought in the Vietnam War would have a right to bear animosity toward him, but too many people say he was set up. One of the main points that strips the credibility from his accusers like McCain, is that Garwood allegedly went to the other side at the very end of his combat tour. It is beyond all reason that he would have made that choice at that time, because he only had ten days left in Vietnam. Ten days? It also seems odd that a supposed "voluntary deserter" and turncoat would end up giving a note to a European tourist in Hanoi in 1979, asking him to contact the U.S. and tell them he was a POW alive there. Garwood is said to have told the tourist that he knew the location of many more Americans being held in Vietnam. This became a major point of contention as it quickly made the press and even delayed Garwood's release by the Vietnamese government for a week, after they finally admitted he was there, something they initially denied according to reports. When it came to his claim of seeing other American POW's in the late 1970's, some elected officials backed Garwood, and others went for his throat. McCain led the pack with the loudest and most critical voice. He was especially bothered by the Garwood made-for-television movie called "The Last P.O.W." The Bobby Garwood Story which debuted on TV in 1992. McCain used testimony of Garwood's fellow prisoners to take the Marine to task and one person McCain used was Gustav Mehrer, a former POW who accused Garwood of trying to "recruit him into the North Vietnamese Army." But that story fell apart when declassified CIA documents clearly showed Mehrer was believed to be the same SP4 Gustav Mehrer (also known as Gus Maddox) who was an American prisoner of war working for the Viet Cong near Quang Nam Province. Abandoning Those Who Serve
Like in the case of Bobby Garwood, Bowe Bergdahl is already being abandoned by elements of his country. Who do you thank for it? The biggest flag wavers of all, FOX News. Any thinking person knows that from his perspective, sitting in a chair in front of a computer screen, this cowardly FOX pundit Ralph Peters can not possibly know the situation that Bergdahl is in. We do however, clearly see the situation Peters is in. He's an ignorant hazard to our American troops serving overseas. Trust me, as they go into combat, our forces will now all have added anxiety, wondering if they are captured, if their nation's right leaning TV network will quickly accuse them of desertion. Now our families have one more thing to worry about, and it is from the folks who sponsored these damned wars in the first place. And, when you are in Iraq or Afghanistan, you get to see the television that the federal government wants you to see. You probably won't be shocked to know this, but half of the U.S. commercial television that I saw while covering the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, was FOX News. By mandate apparently, that biased bunch of propagandists is placed in front of our military forces in the chow halls, the recreation centers, etc. I can tell you one thing with total certainty; Americans may have deserted wars over the years, but the Taliban are not the kind of group that you just walk up to in your Army uniform and say hello. But even if the worst accusations were somehow true, the very notion of convicting a soldier over the airwaves without a trial or even real knowledge of the situation at hand, is scandalous. It certainly isn't democratic. That Fox News representative, spokesman - called for the Taliban's execution of an American soldier. If Bowe Bergdahl is killed as a POW, his blood is on the hands of this man and the Fox network. And even as FOX News abandons any support of this captured American soldier, the word from overseas is that his Army and Marine brothers and sisters have dedicated themselves to kicking some serious Taliban ass on his behalf and getting him home. You are kidding, correct? August 20, 2018 12:22 pm (Pacific time)
Did you read the testimony of 15 other POW's who knew Garwood in the Prison Camp? I'm not sure that any reasonable person (despite their political persuasion) could conclude that he isn't a traitor? The many different POW's represented a range of political views, ethnicity and race. It appears that the writer of this article is agenda driven.

I think this man went missing under strange circumstances. If?? I know what happenned. But there is nothing to support that this man is a deserter or turncoat. Anybody wanting to turn their back on him should be shot. FIND HIM 1ST. I thank all military for helping me in Iraq and Afghanistan by arming me. My only request of them. Was to insure I would be able to force them to kill me quickly. In case you boys have to leave me. And you knew what they would do if they got their hands on us. I never had to worry about getting my head cut off or being set fire to. I wish our missing boys could say the same.

I'm in his brigade in Afghanistan. I have this to say, people stop believeing everything you here on t.v.! One or two things are going to happen, either he will be rescued or he will die. Stop second guessing, I sincerely wish the best for his family. I hope we can bring one of our fellow Alaskan Paratroopers back home. But for right now lets focus on his safe return, deserter or not.

the consistent policy of fox "news"is to destroy dissent,by creating a fog of hate. hate is a cheap addiction, and we see it now in the eating of our own. the silence of the public to the treasonous comments, made on public airwaves, damning this soldier and his family is deafening. they should be grounds for the stripping of this "military commentator"s rights and benefits as retired military, and it should be a bucket of cold water in the face of those addicted to the fox spew. why is the glare of truth on such a disgusting injustice so limited ? thank you tim, for your efforts to shine a light..

Vic I know what I would do if my country was invaded, and just how to go about it, do you? Maybe you have missed out on the brutal killing and torture methods that have been inflicted on American citizens whether they were journalists, private citizens or soldiers. Once again you are very fortunate to live in America where you can voice your opinions, whether informed or not.

Hey Tim, I call Peters a low life. Not the kid I'm his supporter, thanks. Semper Fi!
Editor: Please forgive me JB, I will try to read the comment next time before throwing in my two cents' worth. Semper Fi Brother.

Ralph Peters is a low life in my opinon. No matter what Bergdahl did, and I don't think he deserted he is a 23 year old young man who is probaly scared to death of the situation he is in. All us old warriors would like to think name rank and serial number is all we would ever say but if you haven't been in that situation you should shut your pie hole. McCain is a hero to me but what he said about Garwood is disgusting. We all are different in extreme situations. I think we are on a long slippery slope in this country and we better get our sh^%t together are things are gonna start happaning.

To all: From longtime inside-media experience and perspective (ever since '34) I can tell you with surety that all you ever need to know about Fox is that it was established by Murdoch the Australian press guru, and its working patterns set up to Roger Ailes at his instigation and for his dollar payments --with absolutely no reference to ethical journalism as practiced by many others, even yet...
Vic July 23, 2009 1:17 pm (Pacific time)
Mark..you must be talking about the Blackwater mercenaries...who in my mind, got what they deserved. Are you a defender of mercenaries? Tell me this, what would YOU do if our country was invaded, our citizens shot up at roadblocks and our women raped and tens of thousands of us were arrested and thrown into prisons where rape and torture are the norm? Nothing? Face it,....we are the invaders, we are the bad guys. Iraq never did anything to us, and Tel Aviv probably had a lot more to do with 9-11 than Baghdad or Kabul. I say quit doing wars for profit, and we wont have POWs. Can we really afford this nonsense anyways ? It is telling that when my daughter was in Southhampton England attending college, she was advised that when travelling in Europe to say she was Canadian "to avoid problems". Europe has experienced Fascist governments and aint too keen on em.

Well I really doubt that FOX will lose any viewers over this very minor dust-up. I see far worse lies coming from outfits like Air America and their television clone MSNBC. When one calls FOX viewers outlandish names you simply reinforce what these viewers know about the predicted behavior of the radicals. Sure you can censor positive comments about FOX news, but they still put all views on and have debates where all sides are given the opprotunity to make their particular points. Most left organizations cannot allow this because "facts" are their enemy so they cherry pick info and augment it, usually deceptively. The American viewing audience makes their decisions on what they will watch and to call them names is why outfits like MSNBC are in the rating cellar.
Editor: So you are "Chet" today? Listen you little case, the best part of you never found its way to the front. I publish your little scribe purely for entertainment. After all, everyone needs a good laugh every now and then. I can't say you aren't good for anything I guess. You always use different names on comments and I think you seriously need to seek mental health care.
Mark Sichau July 23, 2009 10:20 am (Pacific time)
Vic hopefully we won't see this soldier dismembered, burned and hanging either. As you know this has been SOP for the Taliban and terrorists in general. My guess is that many of those I know who have been POW's in past conflicts would prefer what you deem as torture compared to what our past and current enemies have done if given a choice. Have you ever talked to any POW's from past wars and heard about their experiences first hand? Some rather chilling stories, and generally their injuries and other documentation back them up regarding their truthfullness and veracity. You are very lucky to live in a country such as ours.

Well at least we haven seen pics of him naked being ridiculed by female "soldiers",or bitten by attack dogs or put in "stress positons". I hope the Taiban realize the PR value of not using American techniques and brutality, and do not hurt or kill him. Im sure many in the Pentagon and the WMD industry and warmongers in general would love to see him tortured and killed, so they can justify our invasion and make more big bucks. By the way, arent we holding around 15,000 Iraqis in prisons without trials or even charges, including children? I hope Pfc. Bergdahl is treated better han those people.

My heart goes out to the captured soldier and his family. Whether right or wrong, I suppose it comes natural that we care more about a fellow countryman, altho, all human beings are equal. I knew this was coming. The U.S. has lost any type of moral credibility with its practices of indefinate detention without representation, and torture. It is now very difficult to stand with moral credibility and accuse others of wrongdoing. The first post on this page was very SCARY!! God help us. yeesh! Wont speak for Tim, but I do not hate this country, I am very concerned about what the leaders are doing tho. I dont hate the people such as the first poster, because I realize how brainwashing our entire public education system and the media have become. Its not the fault of the average person. But I would suggest turning off your tv. In closing, one thing the fox schill got wrong was about getting your rifle and shooting yourself because its better than being captured. Any fighting soldier would go down taking as many as he could with him, (if at all possible) until killed. That is why indefinate detention and torture do more harm than good for our soldiers. Especially the captured ones. Sorry about the novel here, but one last thing: Did you ever think that maybe the fox schill was told to say that because if the soldier was released, and he spoke of tolerable conditions while being captured, how much egg would be on the U.S. face?? The last thing they want is for the soldier to be released.

You guys at Salem-News sure are tolerant with the retard comments eh? I'd like to meet that silly sack of garbage in an alley, but I'll stop there. Let me put it this way, you can't find a lot of truth in reporting these days, and this is one of the few news organizations that consistently tells the truth in spite of the consequences. It matters.
An American Soldier July 23, 2009 12:34 am (Pacific time)
Geez, when does the madness from this thing called Fox end? This is the worst thing I have ever read about them. I hope everyone sends this story out to everyone they know, I will!
pnycc July 22, 2009 11:58 pm (Pacific time)
Ok, Tim, pack up and leave. You do not know the first thing about this country, other than you hate it, and most of it's people, people like me. So, leave. Take your own advice. Is Bergdahl a deserter? I don't know. I can't know. I can't know he is, or he isn't. I find it unlikely he is, but the possibility EXISTS. Is someone who suggests he is worthy of deportation? No. Last I knew, we had free speech in this country, and if he's wrong, he should be held accountable for defaming someone. But if he's right, you pack up and head for Cuba, where you would seem to fit in so well.
Editor: Your entire political cause and belief system is based on racism and lies, so why would anyone expect you to understand? Let's see... Michael Moore makes movies about the lies of the Bush Administration and your camp calls him a pinko and a rotten American. But your little hero can call for a soldier's death and that is OK? Think about what you are saying, think about it! Do you even know?
