(ALBANY, Ore. ) - Albany Fire Chief John Bradner has declared July 9, the start of fire season due to ongoing hot, dry weather. During fire season, weeds, grass, and other noxious vegetation that has been determined to be a fire hazard must be addressed to reduce the potential for fire in accordance with Albany Municipal Code 7.84.160. To report a vegetation fire hazard in Albany, call 541-791-0155. Introduction to Backpacking: Albany Parks & Recreation Department is offering a class in introduction to Backpacking, at Drift Creek Wilderness for ages 14 and up. Instructor is outdoor enthusiast Brett Gallagher, who has over 10 years of outdoor teaching experience. This class includes two, 2-hour long Monday evening informational sessions at the Albany Senior Center plus an overnight weekend trip to the Drift Creek Wilderness in the Oregon Coast range. This course will cover: Gear basics (Backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, footwear, etc.) Clothing and shelter Backcountry cooking; all meals included Leave-no-trace certification Map and compass training (some limited GPS instruction) Backcountry First-Aid and wilderness medicine Reducing your pack weight (Ultra light or comfortable) Permits and trip planning Class size is limited, and space is allocated on a first-come basis. Course fees include: class materials, trip costs (transportation, parking and permits), and food. Students will need to bring their own backpacks, clothing, shelter and sleeping gear. Rental packages are available if necessary. Registration is required two weeks prior to trip date. Informational meetings are July 21 and 28, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Weekend wilderness backpacking trip is August 1-2, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Cost is $275 per person, (Anyone under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by a paid adult). Learn How to Paint: Albany Parks & Recreation Department is offering a new class for ages 17 and older to learn how to paint. The class is scheduled 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. This class will teach basic art principles and techniques using acrylic paint. Brush, palette knife, cloth, and sponge techniques will be explored. Color mixing, palette choices, solvents, painting surfaces, and brush care will also be featured. Each student will produce an acrylic painting on 11x14 stretched canvas to take home. Cost for the class is $20 for Albany residents or $26 for those who live outside the Albany city limits. Students will also pay $8 supply fee. Adult Summer Reading Program: The Albany Public Library is offering a summer reading program for adults. The free public program begins July 10 and concludes August 31. Participants keep track of books they read or listen to and become eligible to win prizes donated by local businesses. To enter, participants should stop by the Main Library, 2450 14th Avenue SE, or the Carnegie Library, 302 Ferry Street SW, write their name, phone number, and the title of a book they recently finished reading or listening to, and place the form in a bucket labeled for Adult Summer Reading. All books are eligible. Use the self-check machines and drop your receipt into the drawing bucket for a chance to win. Five drawings for prizes will be held throughout the summer. Family Music Hour: Children of all ages and their families are invited to an hour of music and fun at the Little Kids’ Jamboree at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Main Library, 2450 14th Avenue SE. Musician Lorna Miller will lead the musical activities – singing and playing guitar while the children play along on a variety of rhythm instruments, sing, and dance. The Library will provide a display of books available for checkout to continue the fun and learning at home. This program takes the place of the usual Thursday morning story time, and is a part of the Library’s Summer Reading Program events scheduled from mid-June through August. It is free of charge, and no registration is required. New Parent and Child Classes: Albany Parks & Recreation Department is offering new parent and child interactive classes this summer. All classes are held at Maple Lawn, 1950 Salem Avenue SE. · Bonding with Baby, Yin Yoga for Two (parent with a child 4 weeks-7 months): 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursdays, July 31 - August 28. Cost is $43 for Albany residents and $56 for participants who live outside the Albany city limits. · Mommy and Me Yoga (parent with a child 18 months-3 years): 12:30 - 1:15 p.m., Saturdays, August 2 - 30. $43 /$56.
