(NEWBERG, Ore.) - A Newberg man has been arrested for assault and mistreatment following the investigation into an incident critically injuring a seven-month old infant.

23-year old Kevin James Jarnagin called the Newberg-Dundee 9-1-1 Center shortly after 930 a.m. Tuesday, July 7th 2009, reporting that an infant girl was not breathing and unresponsive.

The child was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and shortly after to OHSU-Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It was discovered the child was suffering from a skull fracture and internal abdominal injuries. The child remains in critical condition.

Sergeant Tim Weaver with Newberg-Dundee Police, says several officers assisted Newberg Fire Department paramedics in the initial care of the child, and the case was immediately referred to the police department's investigators.

Jarnagin was arrested Wednesday evening, charged with two counts of first-degree Assault, and one count of first-degree Criminal Mistreatment. He is being held on $305,000 bail at the Yamhill County Corrections Facility, McMinnville.

Weaver says the case has been referred to the Yamhill County District Attorney's Office for prosecution. Mr. Jarnagin will be arraigned today at 1:20 p.m., in Yamhill County Circuit court. The investigation is continuing.

First-degree Assault is a Class A Felony and a Measure 11 crime. First-degree Criminal Mistreatment is a Class C Felony.

Newberg-Dundee Police Detectives were assisted by the Newberg Fire Department, the Portland Police Bureau, the OHSU Staff, and Gresham Police Department.

The Real Problem in today Society is when Mother has to go to work to provide for herself and for the child. So She leaves her infant child With the Boyfriend, who sometimes, not a biological father of that baby, who doesn't have any feelings toward the baby of his girlfriend. I am not saying that is the case about that man; I don't know.Goverment has to care about the mothers staying with their infants until the age of when they can go to preschool. Note to all Motrhers: Please do not leave Your child with anyone else, besides You and your husband IF HE IS biological father of YOUR CHILD; your friends, boyfriend don't ever have the fealing to Your Child. Who knows how they will treat Your Child when You are away? - YOU MAY NEVER KNOW!!! that is very scary!!! Editor, Please post my Comment!!!

They say only believe a 10th of what you can read in a news paper Or something like that. Every thing is up to the interpretation of the writer and how they want to present the facts as they see them, and what will make a good story truth or not it is there version and that is what they want to write. Kevin like all other humans have there good points as well as there bad. I have always known him to have a sweet nature. I have seen the boy personally deal with a very large and extended family who all have many small children. And in all the years I have known them. I have seen him pick a niece’s nephew’s cousins or any other small wiggly person up if they were crying and give comfort, when most boys his age would avoid anything of the sort. Or they will hand them to the nearest female. Let us not forget that he is only 23 years old. This is still young in to day’s society. Most 20 something’s still do not have it together. Some will never get it together and but most do sooner than later. If this would have happened to me when I was taking care of children I might have panicked. A person having a seizure is terrifying, but a baby has to be down right horrifying. I also have a limited knowledge of performing CPR on a baby, and it requires a special training to do this because it is so dangerous for the child if not done perfectly right. Paramedics have a very hard job and should always be thanked for all they do. Of course the internal injuries would have showed sign of healing she was in the hospital for some time before she passed away. As for me my prayers are for him and his family they have a long and hard road ahead of them. Not only for the loss of a daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, but all the crap that will come from the judgmental narrow minded people who will point fingers and say very hurtful things. There will be your tacky, boorish, uneducated or just plain awful people. Take the high road. Stay clean. Do not let your self be one of the people that wallow in the mud.

What a sicko! Someone needs to Shake this guy, fracturing his skull and causing him other sever injuries. I highly doubt he would like it done to him so why in the hell do it to an innocent, helpless infant! There's no call in doing that to anyone no matter what the situation is, if he couldn't handle it, he should have just walked away and have been an adult about it, but no, he would rather harm this child. People like this are just such a waste of precious life and don't seem to care about anyone but themselves!
