(SWEET HOME, Ore. ) - A 40-year-old Halsey man died late Saturday night after jumping from a 70-foot bridge and drowning near Sweet Home. Linn County Sheriff’s Deputies say Gregory Aaron Culver drowned after doing a back flip off Rocky Top Bridge near Quartzville Road, about 20 miles from the junction of Quartzville and Highway 20 east of Sweet Home. Police said Culver jumped off the bridge for fun. The men with Culver called for help when he didn't resurface. Divers from Sweet Home Fire Department and Linn Sheriff's Office responded and found Culver's body in the water after 35 minutes. Deputies said the men had been drinking prior to the drowning. All of you can just shut up, he was my dad. I didn't know this, but he is. I'm 14 and doesn't have a dad, because he made some mistakes. He was some idiot to you, but don't talk about him like that. I don't even know him, and now I never will.

I dont know why Im even bothering to write this I guess its for my own relief. I just happened to stumble upon this sight. I was Gregs Girlfriend shortly before this happened, However I went to high school with him and knew him probably better than even YOU did Sara and Nicole! Ya he was a sweet person and He wanted to be a cristian and he was loving and I did love him, STILL do! But Face it he was an ALCHOLIC and what he did was STUPID! Now we all get to miss out on growing old with him, And Look what its done to his mother susie. How sad. Im angry with him for pulling such a dumb stunt.

Drunk or Sober what an idiot! And now the State will make it illegal to drink in Quartsville because of this idiot! As for being a CHRISTIAN then why was he DRUNK? Funny how a stupid move caused everyone life long pain, cause you know a 70 feet he felt nothing..

Just before I read this article, I read about all the drunken people being arrested at a local park. Once again alcohol turns people into non-thinking idiots. As for the attack on Curmudgeon by Nicole, I really can't understand that. She seems to stoop to the levels she is vehemently complaining about. As for pulling God is as a trump card, there is far too much of that in every issue in the news. "Gays have no rights because it is against the Word of God to be gay." is just one of many. I think there is something in MY King james about drinking to excess as being wrong. If Nicole gives her sorrow a few days and then return to her words here she will likely see what she said was rude and wrong. But she should be forgiven by Curmudgeon and all the readers - remember that she is in a state of sorrow and most folks will tend to lash out in that situation.

Well Nicole, it's unfortunate your reading comprehension is so limited, or you might have more clearly understood my comments. You start off with "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," and then spend the rest of your post attacking and insulting me. Pretty much what I would expect of someone who invokes God as their trump card. As tempting as it is, I have no intention of coming down to your level and insulting you.

Typo correction (I must have had a tear in my eye): the line "I hear it's scientifically produce chemicals" should read "scientifically proven to produce chemicals"... And Sara, thank you for your nice comments. I heard the sad news today and began looking online for a news report; stumbled upon this site. I haven't seen Greg for over 15 or 20 years since I left Oregon, but it makes me happy to know he had caring friends like you. Nicole

Curmudgeon, have you ever heard the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" Interesting that you can take a phrase like "alcohol appears to have been a factor" and turn it into having no sympathy for a drunk doing a backflip. Please do the world a favor and crawl back under your rock. Greg was a Christian and would no doubt forgive you for your careless comments. Now God bless you and please smile...I hear it's scientifically produce chemicals in the body to make you HAPPY. Besides, you're not God, or did you forget? Gosh, look at me--wasting energy on an opinionated know-it-all with nothing better to do. I suppose I should be surprised you even read! :)

I am a friend of the family and just so you know no one is asking for your sympathy, as you did not know Greg and therefore; we do not want it. It was an accident and is very tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with the family... We all loved you Greg and will remember your smile. Thank you for always making me laugh.

When are people going to learn that booze and swimming, especially in cold water, are a deadly combination? This is five dead in four days. One Wednesday, one Thursday, two Friday, and now one on Saturday, with alcohol involved in at least a couple, and very likely all of them. It's very sad, but very maddening at the same time. Even though it's tragic, it's difficult to have much sympathy for a drunk who does a back flip off a bridge 70 feet above the water.
