Jul-03-2012 19:33TweetFollow @OregonNews Jamie Leigh Jones, Assaulted Twice?Poetry by Luke Easter Salem-News.comTwo smiling faces were taken away, and the government and its courts add insult to injury.
(CLEVELAND) - The court order against rape victim Jamie Leigh Jones is another example of our societal regression. It is a stunning example of what has become of something once adequately titled: 'the American justice system'. Today it is a mindless program that still allows women who serve their country to be treated like objects and raped and killed without consequence. The legacy of former Vice President Dick Cheney includes responsibility for the Iraq war- that is well established. He was also squarely behind the skyrocketing level of mercenary use in a war which, it turns out, was illegal both in both concept and conduct, as it was based in a false perception of Iraq having sophisticated 'weapons of mass destruction' or WMD's which as it turned out, never existed. In the surge of national patriotism, many chose not to take an anti-war political stance, but to back their nation and take part in the effort. It is within this mix of Americans that we find Lavena Johnson and Jamie Leigh Jones. LaVena, who was a Black, was a U.S. Army soldier in Iraq when she was raped and murdered; her body set ablaze with massive injuries. Her death likely involved a contractor; that is what many speculate, which brings Haliburton and their subsidiary KBR into the story. These are Dick Cheney's companies. His neighbor in Dubai is Erik Prince who owns XE, the mercenary group formerly known as 'Blackwater'. Jamie Leigh Jones said she was raped; a court decided she hadn't been, and now they say this unjustified victim has to repay Haliburton's court costs. It is only in recent years that women and minorities have found a level footing in the United States military services which are traditionally racist. For some, the challenges go far beyond national politics. That is important. It is not the American service man or woman on the ground who is responsible for the business-based politics that drove this conflict into existence, creating a breeding ground for criminal acts like the ones discussed below by Luke. Both the Lavena Johnson case and the recent court decision against Jamie Leigh Jones, are a slap in the face of the common American, and a reminder of how thoroughly were were 'had' under the last presidency. It is not exactly clear sometimes, if they are not still running the show. Of course Obama is a different person entirely, but it seems the problems he stood against all continue along the same path. - intro by Tim King, Salem-News.com News Editor Jamie Leigh Jones, Assaulted Twice?Okay, the President and several athletes have put out a PSA, Jamie Leigh JonesLavena JohnsonMar-27-2012: Trayvon Martin vs. PFC Johnson, LeVena Lynn - Poetry by Luke Easter Salem-News.com Feb-15-2010: Poetic Verses Shed Light on LaVena Johnson's Military Rape and Murder in Iraq - Luke Easter Tim King Salem-News.com Dec-18-2008: Army Should Reopen Investigation Into Death of Pfc Lavena Johnson (VIDEO) - Tim King Salem-News.com Jan-10-2009: Tim King Joins Radio Free Nation Tonight to Discuss LaVena Johnson Case - Salem-News.com Apr-26-2010: Louis Maxwell (In Memorial) - Poetry by Luke Easter Salem-News.com May-30-2009: Nooses in Iraq - Salem-News.com _____________________________________________
Luke Easter is a poet who writes about things that are very close to the heart of Salem-News.com. Another former U.S. Marine, Luke heals the world with an approach that reaches people on a different level, one known for centuries, yet too often forgotten in the one we live in. We live in a world of social & economic injustice. The main reason for founding America in the first place was to relieve the oppression of the King of England. Patrick Henry said it best, “give me liberty or give me death.” And yet, all too often death seems to be the only way out. Why is there such a high suicide rate especially among teens, in the land of the free & the home of the brave? What makes headlines? Good news? Ha! More depressing stories than anything else. I feel poetry takes an edge off the hurt of bad news while still delivering it but in a, “glitzy” sort of way. Giving a different perspective. Kind of like slap in the face as opposed to a knife in the back. At least with the slap you’ll live to see another day and you will know whom it’s from. I wasn’t here for the beginning of the world but at 59, I just might be here for the end. Even though it’s still a knife, rhyme poetry helps to dull the blade. And that’s my job.
