Jul-01-2009 19:39TweetFollow @OregonNews Lawsuit Will Be Filed Over Camp Lejeune Water ContaminationSalem-News.comThe lawsuit will allege that regulations in place as early as 1963 prohibiting the contamination were not followed.
(WINSTON/SALEM, N.C.) - The law offices of Anderson Pangia & Associates, PLLC (offices in Washington, D.C. and Winston Salem, North Carolina) and Smorto, Persio, Webb & McGill (of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania), will file on Monday July 6th a lawsuit arising from the toxic drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune. The lawsuit alleges that the United States Government, through agents within the Department of Defense, knowingly exposed hundreds of thousands of Marines, sailors, their family members, and civilian employees to highly contaminated drinking water on the base at Camp Lejeune, while at the same time actively disseminating disinformation to those exposed in an effort to minimize the significance of the exposure. The complaint, to be filed in federal court in the Eastern District of North Carolina, attaches numerous documentary exhibits in support of its allegations that the government knowingly, recklessly and/or negligently violated its own standards, rules and regulations by permitting the exposure to continue after the government was specifically warned the drinking water was "highly contaminated with . . . solvents!" and advised that "these appear[] to be at high levels and hence more important from a health standpoint. . . " The lawsuit will allege that the Department of the Navy had regulations in place as early as 1963 which prohibited the contamination and which would have averted it had those regulations been obeyed; subsequently in 1974 the Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina put in place additional regulations governing the proper disposal of the very same chemicals which were discovered later to be contaminating the drinking water; had these regulations been obeyed, the contamination likewise would have been prevented. This same 1974 base order declared these "organic solvents" to be hazardous, the lawsuit states. Many scientists have called the drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune the worst in the nation's history. The contaminated drinking water was consumed by an estimated one million people. The lawsuit will allege that exposure to the toxins caused numerous health problems including cancers, reproductive disorders and birth defects, among other maladies. Joseph Anderson, Michael Pangia and Kevin Persio, the lawyers responsible for filing the suit, will answer questions of the media at a press conference to be held in front of the North Carolina State Capitol building, 1 East Edenton St. Raleigh, NC 27601 at 1:30 p.m. on Monday July 6, 2009. My husband was station at Camp Lejeune from August 1971 till late 72 after returning from RVN. We lived in the wonderful base housing off Camp Geiger also know as silver city. My husbands health is very bad due to AO probably water from Lejeune also. I had my first child at the naval hospital on base. During my entire pregnancy I was told I was having twins all the way up till delivery. Well as it turned out I passed out instantly after the first boy was delivery.I was uncouncious for nearly 3 days and was told I only had one child (single birth). In the early seventies the husbands were not allowed on the labor or delivery floor he was finally able to see me on the 3rd day.He wanted to have our twin boys delivered to my room they brought in one child and said I had a single birth???? The bassinnet had a little blue card inserted at the top that said Smith (Twin Males). It has been 43 yrs. now and I still know I delivered twins!!!! I went home to Michigan with my one son two months later. My husband had to take emergency leave due to the fact I went into a coma with a temperature of 107. I made it through without any brain damage, the doctors took out my appendix did exploratory surgery and came to the conclussion I was poisoined from the water. The doctors wanted to do a hysterectomy on me at that time I was 19yrs old my sister put a stop to that due to the fact I wasn't able to make that decision and the Red Cross was working on getting my husband home(emergency leave). After that I had two miscarriages, then in Nov of 74 I gave birth to twin boys. (Yes, another set) I have been diagnosed with sclerodermia and CREST disease finally had to have a hysterectomy in 1987 had cancer on the inside lining of my uterus. My illnesses are long and continue which I'm sure will end my life sooner than later. Scheduled for surgery Wednesday have growths growing on my knees the list goes on for me also. My son has a neuropathy Guillian. Well now we can finally sign up for the Camp Lejuene Family care act.. What a joke that is ..1st... what I want is my (Twin Boy) that the hospital lied about!!! It was no single birth like they lead us to believe. 2nd.. Take care of my son(the twin that they acknoledged) he was affected by the water. 3rd take care of me I would like to have back pay for every year I have been deprived for not knowing the truth abouth the birth of my first set of twins(1972) and all my medical conditions since then. This has been an emotional roller coaster making people jump through hoops when the government know what they did..

Deanna on the West Coast I can relate to that. I have stuggled with work history for many years since I left the USMC in 1973. My last year I was stationed at Force Troops and was a brigg chaser through out the base. I also worked as a main side switchboard operator and spent alot of time training in many areas of the base. I was trying to gather orders from the Marine Corps with no luck. It is frustrating and adressing issues around social awkwardness, anxiety and motivational issues is another struggle. Your not alone, keep pushing forward. Marines never give up!
Deanna Nazarchuk January 1, 2015 3:01 pm (Pacific time)
I lived at Camp Lejeune when I was 8 and 9 years old. Many years ago I had pinpointed it was shortly after I changed, I became socially awkward, lethargic, as I grew older severly depressed, with anxiety, and NO motivation. I just thought I was lazy and weird. At this age, could this contaminated water caused my life to change, my brother also changed, but in different ways. My eamil address is missdeanqueenbee@gmail.com. I've had a lot of pain that can't be explained, I just want to live and be there for people, I'm so socially withdrawn I can't have normal life. I fake it when I work, but it's getting harder, now my parents and brother need me, and I can barely work myself. Has anyone had or know of others with similar circumstances? thank you !!!!

Sean Bey April 18, 2014 2:48 pm (Pacific time)
Hello,
My name is Sean Bey, and I was a marine stationed at Camp Lejeune from 1986-1990 who frequented base housing at Tawara Terrace. I was diagnosed with Neurosarcoidosis in 1997; however, I experienced mini seizures three years before my diagnosis. The Neurosarcoidosis has an effect me this very day i.e. drop foot, nerve damage, right leg weakness. I have applied for compensation three times from the VA and was denied because I did not have sufficient evidence, and my neurologist does not want to confirm that the water was the cause for my debilitating disease.
You can reach me at: beycamden7@gmail.com
I sent an email to you Sean, glad we're in touch now1

Hello, I was a child that lived at Tarawa Terrace, I wanted to say thank you for the support that you are showing in this matter. I have had multiple health issues and some that I have been enduring for a minimum of over 33 years. I think that what needs to be addressed is the fact that with medical records that date back to before this issue was brought to life, is the fact that no medical records specifically state that during the timeframe of initial medical onset, it was contributed to contaminated water, because it was not a public fact. I know for me, doctors were baffled and didn't know what could have created my conditions or the severity at such an early age and with no family history. I think this needs to be brought to the governments attention. Thank you. sweetmist0111@hotmail.com

Christian August 30, 2013 7:46 pm (Pacific time)
I'm 42 years old and was born @ Camp Lejeune Nov. of 1970 and have been plagued with health problems my entire life. I suffer from an under active thyroid disorder. My doctor thinks I may be developing a goiter, I do not have insurance so I cannot have the proper tests done that I need to determine whether or not the goiter is developing. Or if it is turning into cancer. Also: I suffer from immune deficiencies sinusitis and re-occurring sinus polyps. stomach and intestinal problems, I have had 2 sinus polyp-ectomy surgeries and counting, (they are coming back again) labrynthitis, (an inner ear issue that causes ocasional but severe dizyness and verdigo) shingles, gout, CFS, degenerative disk disorder, hernia, short term memory loss, vision problems, tennonitis (Ringing in the ears) and more. My Father was the Marine based at the camp he developed lung cancer. My mother developed severe heart disease and had a quadruple bypass. How do I become attached to the class action law suit i'm tierd of suffering and worry about my children if something should happen to me. Thanks Christian

Paul,
In 1985 several wells were closed at Camp Lejeune, it is the same time that El Toro's wells were discovered to be contaminated. Unfortunately it sounds like you were there when the problems were still highly active. I also sent you an email.
Anonymous March 20, 2013 6:13 pm (Pacific time)
The Centers for Disease Control has a very impressive logitudinal study on this matter, and essentially all listed health issues, just like the blue water navy personnel trying to get AO coverage (they were formally denied comp. last week), nothing is over average incident levels found in the general population. If they were, major law firms would be pursuing the matter. I would just start eating more greens, get more exercise and feel lucky that you live in a country that will help you if you are deserving of that help.
Robin Johnson March 20, 2013 1:49 pm (Pacific time)
I was married to a US marine and we moved to base housing Tawara Terrace. When I got pregnant with twins we moved to base housing on Camp Lejuene. I had surgery after my delivery and had a mild infarction. I was told that the surgery went well except for that happening on the operating table. I later moved from Camp Lejuene and had a heart related episode which was called idiopathic cardiomyopathy (heart attack from an unknown orgin). I was there when the water was contaminated for about 5yrs, 1987-19921..How do I apply for that class action suit.

Was stationed at II MAF Camp Lejeune from "86" to "88". Had major ecezema (skin) problems since I left and first diagnosed in "87". Not sure of future problems, hopefully, I don't have prostate issues that I know of but could be age too. Unable to have children ... could the toxicity cause sterilization? Already denied by VA for disability for skin problem. Can be reached at "qzeb36a@juno.com.

i am thirty seven years old. My Aunt Wanda and Uncle Todd were stationed at camp lejeune in 1982-1985. My eldest sister and I stayed some summers there. My Aunt Wanda died in 1995 for heart problems. They took a small lump out on Monday and on Wednesday I was in the hospital getting ready for surgery. They took an inch around and an inch deep in my thigh and I have a 4 to 5 inch scar. When I was 21 I got a report of the surgery for my surgeon and he said that I was very lucky the got it when they did. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune 1/1987-10/1990, and in 1997 I was diagnosed with Neurosarcoidosis. I have had grand mal seizures for seven (7) years and developed osteoprosis because I was on high dosages of Prednisone. I am know down to 5mg of Prednisone and cannot go any lower because if I do the Neurosarcoidosis will kick back in. I know this because two years ago I tried to wean myself down to 2.5 mg's (under doctor's supervision), and my legs began to stiffen, forcing me to use a wheel chair for three months. Then a walker and back to a cane. I sent information to a few lawyers about the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune and no one has contacted me.

Victor Malafronte May 1, 2012 3:00 pm (Pacific time)
I was stationed at Camp Lejeune from 1963 to 1967. My military medical record consists of chronic headaches, body rash and lumps on my wrists. My chronic headaches started in the USMC due to the toxic water exposure and continue to this day. My headaches for the pasted 45 years are debilitating, nearly 3-4 per day. I have to go to bed after taking 6 of my Fiorinal with codeine medication. I have been subscribed 12 different medications for my headaches. I was on social security disability from 1991 to 2000 for my headaches. I am currently on SSD again for chronic headaches since 5/2008. I am unable to work. I want to be listed on the class action law suit for the toxic water at Camp Lejeune. I have copies of my extensive medical records dating back to 1990. Thank you. Victor Malafronte. I have tryed time and time again to talk to the law firm about this. Have not been able to make any contact. Is there another way to make contact with anyone on this matter. for some time is running out fast.
Editor: Jodie, I only spoke to the attorney once, and I knew he was overloaded, but agreed to talk to new clients. Things certainly could have changed. I will try to get organized and write a story asking for attorneys to raise their hands and become involved. Thanks.

Is this a class action law suite and how do I include my family members? We lived in Tarawa Terrace in 70-72. Dad was a very healthy man up until the last 10 years of his life he suffered from a terminal lung disease, had a pace maker and heart disease, many cancers of the skin resulting in removal of large portions of his ear, forhead, arms, nose. He suffered from the lung disease until a sudden rupture of his bowel which he died from. My mom has had a large portion of her bowel removed and skin cancer. I have had severe depression for many years, bowel problems, precancer skin removed. Thank you for anwers you may have on how to proceed.

yup another Marine - served 1980 -1984 lived at Tarawa Terrace 2885 Hagaru Drive from 3-1983 till 8-1984 with wife and son born 4-1984 unreal - I have read most of the information on this water issue - The Marines - under the direct supervission of the Navy were neglegent in the entire issue - they need to be held responsible - as we were as enlisted Marines I would like to be involved in a class action suit my son and I have severe medical issues I beleive could be related to the toxins that were fed to us in the drinking water. I waS born at camp lejeune on April 12, 1974. I have lived a normal life until a few years ago and have realized some abnormal renal issues that my doctors say will limit my lifespan...unfortunately. Iron in my blood, damage to my kidneys and liver among other issues will be my demise. Being a man of above average health I found this troubling and my father sent me some information that was more than troubling. My legs bleed my hands have blisters and bleed, my Docs tell me that my expectancy is short.....I am disapointed but happy to find the cause of my issues...Originally the docs said it was hereditary, but no one in my family has ever had such a situation...I give blood because these hereditery situations are usually handled by giving blood (high Iron). my iron is out of control, blood pressure out of control, legs and hands bleeding out of control, I'm 36 and dying form this situation. I hope you all hold the responsible parties accountable....

Tim King: William, as former military we are blocked from taking action against the government by the Ferris Doctrine. Don't ever give up hope over it, there are VA decisions being made in the favor of Marines.
