Fires Flare as Smoke Spreads From California Wildfires to Oregon and Nevada

The National Weather Service reports that wildland fire activity was reported with six new large fires nationally, but California remains the most active state with 27 large fires and 409,046 acres burned.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reports that over 1,450 fires in California have scorched more than 416,200 acres as of early this morning.

AccuWeather.com forecasters say smoky conditions will continue to affect central and northern California as well as western Nevada and southern Oregon.

Red Bluff, California, Reno, Nevada and Medford, Oregon, all reported lowered visibility due to the smoke being spread by a south-southwest steering flow on Monday. The smoke will continue to cause poor air quality and poor breathing conditions, even for healthy adults, through the week.

The dry thunderstorms that have sparked the fires are coming to an end; however, there is no rain forecast to bring help to the firefighters on the firelines.

In California, eight MAFFS C-130 airtankers are supporting the firefighting efforts. The aircraft are based at McClellan Airport in Sacramento, California. Aircraft are provided by the 145th Airlift Wing, Charlotte North Carolina, the 302nd Airlift Wing, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the 153rd Airlift Wing from Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Basin Complex (Los Padres National Forest): 39,906 acres at three percent contained. This complex of two fires is five miles southeast of Big Sur. Hwy 1 remains closed. BTU Lightning Complex (Butte Unit, Cal Fire): 16,000 acres at 25 percent contained. This complex of 31 fires is in Butte county. Active fire behavior continued. Residences remain threatened.
