(SOLANA, BEACH, Calif.) - On a January day with temperatures pushing into the 80's in San Diego County, a white van circles the block in San Diego’s Hillcrest district for a last minute drop-off of creative “boards,” panels displaying images of websites and short films. Our destination: The San Diego Ad Club. This is an entry for the Addy Awards. I'm getting a creepy feeling as I'm driving--as I get closer to the deadline and as the temperatures keep rising on a hot afternoon. While today’s “red hot” ad agencies feature dog sitters, light beer, and DIY corn chip spots, we turn the lens on a forty-something climate scientist, Dr. Jeff Severinghaus Ph.D., in a laboratory bursting with pipes and pressure gauges. Severinghaus’ memorable line, “Kiss the Everglades Goodbye,” is not the usual tag-line that one would associate with a Super Bowl beer commercial. It appears in the short film “Climate Change: Not Business as Usual.” Advertiser Empowered Energy Solutions, uses sophisticated energy analysis software to tune commercial and residential buildings for their optimal efficiency. The company also provides renewable energy technologies, like rooftop solar. “No longer are you trading off environmental benefit against your fiscal well being. They're one in the same,” says Torre Bueno, in the film, “Secrets in the Ice.” La Jolla’s Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is the film location because Scripps was the first institution to develop the field of climate science; Charles David Keeling, a geo-scientist there, identified rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere in 1957. Empowered Energy Solutions is “Megawatt Sponsor” of the Birch Aquarium's "Boundless Energy" Exhibit, and a collaborator in reducing the Aquarium’s energy consumption. San Diego Attorney John Reaves discusses the Fee and Dividend concept for reducing carbon emissions in "Turning the Titanic," on Empowered's energblog.com, a hub for independent voices on Energy, Climate, and the Environment. The campaign is comprised of two websites and three short films. They can be viewed February 3, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm, at the San Diego Ad Club “Addy Raid” event, at the offices of the San Diego Union Tribune, 350 Camino de la Reina, San Diego, CA 92108, http://www.sandiegoadclub.com/ It's the last minute. I should have had this entry in days ago. But I can't help stop and notice the peach trees that always flowered on my sister's birthday, February 4th, have already been in bloom for quite some time now. Robert Lundahl
