Graphic Designer Launches Kickstarter Art Campaign

Ruiz Jr. has been enjoying his exploration of this fun and creative outlet as he has not yet discovered any other artists pursuing this form of art.

Art of Freddy Ruiz Jr. in Salem, Oregon

(SALEM) - Freddy Ruiz Jr. is challenging himself to raise $2,000 in 30 days. This is an effort to complete and promote an art show called “20 Pieces/20 Weeks.” If the project is successfully funded, Ruiz Jr. will create one art door using vinyl decals every week for 20 weeks. At the end of the 20 weeks there will be an art show in Portland, Salem, and Eugene. The Kickstarter art campaign is scheduled to launch February 8, 2014, at Franklin’s Bottle Shop.

Ruiz Jr. states, “I enjoy the time it takes to create each piece and I especially enjoy the rewarding feeling of creating something with my hands and my mind.”

Vinyl graphic art is like printmaking, because of the layering and hands-on skill. No inks and no paper, just sticker material and clean surfaces. Ruiz Jr. chooses to create with this method because of his experience in sign shops, his education in graphic design, and his general love for the material—vinyl adhesives. There are many colors, textures, and values that vinyl can offer. Ruiz Jr. explains, “I love the vinyl sign material and how the plotter/cutter makes clean lines and applies quickly to almost any substrate. Creating art using vinyl means there’s more for people to make, there are more ways to create, there are more ways to collaborate on artistic expression - illustrators and photographers working with graphic designers, and craftsmen working with sign installers.”

Ruiz Jr. has been enjoying his exploration of this fun and creative outlet as he has not yet discovered any other artists pursuing this form of art. This has become his driving force to inspire more students and designers.

Venturing out toward Portland and Eugene is the goal. The money raised will be used for art materials (vinyl, doors, etc.), promotions, transportation, and gala essentials such as music, venues, and refreshments to properly introduce his audience to a new concept of art.

Kickstarter.com is a new way to fund creative projects. With the support of friends and interested community, people are able to bring creative project to life. Since 2009 over 5 million people have pledged upwards of $900 million to fund over 50,000 creative projects. These projects have a specific funding goal and often a 30-day deadline. Projects must reach their goals to receive any money.

With each donation/pledge level given, a reward will be offered. These rewards include an “I Heart Freddy Art” bumper sticker at the $2 level to a $2000 custom designed “Art Kitchen”. Other rewards include: the art doors themselves, custom decals, custom shirts, and a 40-page booklet of his work.
