(JEFFERSON, Ore.) - A Jefferson man was struck and killed by a train in Jefferson Monday evening. Lt. Sheila Lorance with the the Marion County Sheriff's Office, says it happened at about 5:20 p.m. The pedestrian hit and killed by a train at the crossing on Hazel and 5th Street in Jefferson has been identified as 32-year old Alfredo Savalza of Jefferson. Our Jerry Freeman was on scene, he says one man described the impact of the sound of the train striking the man as very loud. Lorance says Deputy Matt Hagan interviewed witnesses who said the Union Pacific train was traveling southbound when Mr. Savalza was struck. They indicated the railroad crossing arms were down and the lights were flashing when Mr. Savalza walked around them and onto the track in front of the train. The train attempted to stop but was unable to do so.
