Coast Guard Rescues Surfers in Newport, Oregon (VIDEO)

Oregon's Yaquina Head

(SEATTLE) - Coast Guard officials say a man and a girl were hoisted from the rocks at Yaquina Head, Oregon, Sunday by one of their helicopter crews.

The Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Oregon, was contacted by Lincoln County dispatch at 2:32 PM and advised that three surfers were trapped on the rocks at Agate Beach near Yaquina Head.

The Coast Guard says crews from their stations at Depoe Bay and Yaquina Bay launched two 47-foot boat crews while an HH-65 crew from Coast Guard Air Facility at Newport was diverted to the scene.

Coast Guard members found one of the three surfers, the man's daughter, on shore and proceeded to conduct a hoist of the two remaining people.

Both were transfered to the shore where the girl who had been pulled from the rocks was transferred to a local hospital to be treated for shock and hypothermia.

The names of the surfers were not immediately available.

The missions of Group/Air Station North Bend include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection.

In addition, the air station frequently assists Federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations of injured loggers.

Novice surfers and even those who are experienced, need to bear in mind the fact that Oregon's ocean waters are cold and unforgiving. If the swell looks too big, it probably is.
