(SALEM) - Two years ago, the infrastructure and human structure of Haiti was ripped apart and crushed without mercy by a 7.0 monster earthquake. The event ripped people apart from their loved ones, many of whom were lost and never found, and created scenarios where the piling up dead threatened disease and were burned en mass with little hesitation and no ceremony. Among the panic, pain, struggle and inevitable loss, there were shining moments of rescue; people from all over the world moved in to help and they worked long and hard days and nights to pull trapped people from the wreckage of buildings after a week or more. There are few words to describe this mash up of carnage and compassion; tragedy and selfless dedication. Reactions to the saving of life were strong, very strong. Tears flowed, people clapped with joy and while many didn't speak the same language, they all understood the universal concepts of humanity and courage. A year ago- 230,000 people were killed and millions more were left injured, homeless, and searching for answers. The earthquake was absolutely unforgiving, it left people desperate and highly compromised, and then the rains came. Dealing with foreign nationals attached to the United Nations went well for a while, and then Sri Lanka soldiers were sent in and soon reports of rape were widespread. This documentary is intended to remind us all of what Haiti faced and still faces as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck this island nation on 7 January 2009. Salem-News.com covered the Haiti earthquake and related devastation closely, follow the links below to many of our past reports: Post-Earthquake Photos of Haiti by Daniel Cima Haiti Earthquake - One Year into Recovery Video Reportedly Shows UN Soldiers Raping Teenager in Haiti WHO Calls Breastfeeding Best Answer for Newborns in Haiti Ban to Visit Haiti on Sunday To View Post-Quake Relief Efforts Haiti and Sanitation in the Wake of a Disaster Haiti Resettlement and Life in a Remote Village Rain Complicates Problems in Haiti Former U.S. President Clinton Visits Haiti Schools in Haiti Still Under Plenty of Rubble Escaped Prison Population Poses Threat in Haiti Haiti Amputees Struggle Amidst Destruction World Food Program Faces Logistical Challenges in Haiti Arab Nations Unite in Relief Effort for Haiti Haiti's Displaced Number Close to a Million Haitian Doctor Texts While Buried Under Rubble, Groups Searching DR Hospitals Urgent Call for Human Milk Donations for Haiti Infants UN Food Distribution Now Reaching Two Million Earthquake Refugees Night Patrol in Cite Soleil, Haiti Earthquake Refugees Flee Port-au-Prince Helping Haiti's Earthquake Orphans Breastmilk and Charity for Haiti Dominican Republic Teams Bring Relief in Haiti Security Council Authorizes 3,500 More UN Peacekeepers for Haiti UN Secretary-General Mourns Deaths of Top UN Officials in Haiti Quake Dramatic Video of Rescue Efforts in Haiti State Dept. The earthquake was completely tragic, and what words describe the days, weeks and months that followed are nothing I can find. - article by Tim King

I have had the opportunity to meet and work with some Haiti refugees in America. They are grateful to have the opportunity to be here, given that their country is still so far from any sort of recovery. They need to be provided a better support structure than what they have in their government, but I am not sure that they need any more Western intervention, which has not gone well throughout history.
