(LONDON) - Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) will be holding their third annual Genocide Memorial Day on 22 January 2012 between 4pm and 8pm at the Brunei Gallery, located at the School of Oriental and African Studies in Russell Square, London. Speakers at the event will include Professor Ilan Pappe from the University of Exeter; survivor of Srebrenica and activist Hasan Nuhanovic; and spokesperson of Neturei Karta UK Rabbi Ahron Cohen. Bruce Kent from Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament will be launching a poetry competition. The philosophy of Genocide Memorial Day is to remember “man’s inhumanity to man”, and to raise awareness of ongoing genocides and genocidal acts that are still taking place in the world today. In previous years, GMD has remembered the Holocaust, the transatlantic slave trade, Srebrenica, Rwandan genocide, the plight of the Palestinians, and many other genocides and genocidal acts. Massoud Shadjareh, the chair of IHRC, said: “It is vital that people come together to remember that genocide strikes against the very essence of humanity. Genocide is an issue that goes beyond any particular skin colour, ethnicity or religion, and thus requires a united effort across all communities to eliminate it from our world. “We hope that Genocide Memorial Day will continue to foster unity amongst people of all backgrounds against crimes which violate human dignity”.
