PTSD Policemen: My Dogface Brothers in Blue

Before any cops think I am calling them a bad name… read on. Dogface is an honorific term for an infantryman who has survived 30 days of combat. Many did not last 30 minutes.

Police officers

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - If any non-military persons ever deserved the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) it is policemen. Three examples of the inherent danger of being a policeman showed up in stark horror in December in Woodburn, Oregon with two policemen blown to bits and another with a leg blown off.

I am drawn to say that a Police Badge is almost the equivalent of The CIB. If you watch TV of the urban warfare in Iraq you get the notion of a police chase through a town and recently three policemen trying to disarm the bomb which killed two of them.

I went through bomb, mine and booby trap school in western France in January 1945. One of the statements of our instructors comes back to me as I read of the above: “the best precautions and the best equipment aren’t worth a damn if one is trying to disarm a bomb”.

I graduated from mine school with fear in my soul and ice running down my back. I searched carefully for booby traps in every German house I entered, with abject fear as the operative word.

Those of you who have read my articles on Salem-News.com or have seen them on Google know that as a PTSD victim myself, I am an advocate not only my fellow military victims but also for Police and Firemen, Nurses, EMTs and Emergency Room Workers.

I know there are others out there and my remarks also go to you.

I get phone calls and emails from PTSD victims all the time. Just recently I got a call from a policeman in Oregon who has seen and endured more auto-wrecked smashed bodies, gunshot, knife stabbed bodies than a normal person could handle. I can empathize. I’ve been there, seen that and done that. I have PTSD myself.

The worst thing about this policeman is/was his treatment by real and “fake” doctors. Real doctors who prescribed a whole bunch of bad side effect medicines and treated him like a “Lab Rat”.

The worst was a fake doctor- psychologist who had no concept of police blood and guts exposure and told him to “suck it up and do it for the team”. I’m not shocked to hear this story: I’ve heard it hundreds of times.

If this fake doctor was exposed to only one event of a bad auto crash or a multiple slaying he wouldn’t be so glib in his fake diagnosis and foolish advice. This policeman like many others is in grave danger and needs a more knowledgeable and sympathetic caregiver.

If there are policemen, EMTs, etc. in the Portland area you know exactly who I am talking about but he won’t recognize it himself because he is well paid for this phony diagnosis and “treatment”.

Hoorah for my fellow Dogfaces, Armed Forces and Policemen
