Pedestrian Falls into Path of Tri-Met Train

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Beaverton Police were called out at 1:00 a.m. to an accident at the Sunset Tri-Met Max platform. It was reported a person had fallen onto the tracks and was injured, according to Detective Pam Yazzolino with Beaverton Police.

When police arrived they found the victim, 21-year old Keoki Kanakoa Rosimo on the platform with a foot injury.

Yazzolino said, "Witnesses told police Rosimo and his friends had been quietly sitting on the train before they disembarked at the Sunset platform. There they began playfully horsing around and Rosimo either lost his footing or stepped back too far and fell into the train track area."

The conductor reportedly told police he had been watching the young men and saw them playing.

"He said he used extra care in checking their safety and distance from the train before he continued his route. The driver said he looked in his mirror and estimated the young men to be 5-6' away from the train doors, or edge of the platform, before leaving."

Yazzolino says when Rosimo fell it appears he landed between the tracks and the platform wall.

"Tri-Met told police the type of train that was driven that day was a newer model, which meant it had higher clearance between the train skirt and the ground than older models. This allowed Rosimo to be able to lay flat and not be injured considerably worse. He only sustained an injury to his left foot."

Friends and witnesses had pulled Rosimo from the track area back to safety. He was transported to Emanuel Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Although the exact extent of the injury to his foot is unknown. The investigation showed no fault to the Tri-Met driver. No citations were issued nor charges pending.
