Chardon, Ohio Shooting, 4 Wounded, 1 Dead

Sadly, once again bullying rears its ugly head,
Chardon, Ohio, 4 wounded, 1 confirmed dead,
A lone 17 year-old gunman not randomly who?
But exactly when, where, why & how he knew.

Apparently, the memo(s) have been misplaced,
It is not about age, class, stature or even race,
It’s about sincerity, kindness, love and respect,
Not I’m better than you, more popular or neglect.

Some kids might fall into a shell then commit suicide,
While many through their anger will take others lives,
Whatever the case, when will the message go through?
You cannot bully and think nothing will happen to you.

A close-knit community like the suburb Columbine,
Just an occasional shoving match, everything’s fine,
Not realizing a time bomb is ticking, soon to explode,
The relentless insults & pushing borders on overload.

Bam! A weapon appears, students running for cover,
More than likely getting trampled over one another,
As innocent victims get caught but not in a crossfire,
With one-sided vigilance, victims wallows in the mire.

Must we have metal detectors at every entrance gate?
Not really, the outside as well may consume the fate,
Of those who pass themselves off as better than thee,
Will only intensify the severity of the shooting spree.

No, it has not been confirmed this was the case here,
Yet, who will randomly target those they do not fear?
Beretta, oldest active manufacture, Italians can’t buy,
Guns purchased in the USA where thousands will die.

Some are saying it was jealously due to a new beau,
One thing's for sure very soon the truth we'll will know,
Whatever circumstances, only death for high treason,
A girl leaving isn't grounds for open shooting season.

Why or why not, are these not questions to be asked?
When will stricter guns laws be addressed & passed?
Bank robbery, car jacking now I can be shot in class?
Is there not enough turmoil with soon to be $5.00 gas?

We live in a world of social & economic injustice. The main reason for founding America in the first place was to relieve the oppression of the King of England. Patrick Henry said it best, “give me liberty or give me death.” And yet, all too often death seems to be the only way out. Why is there such a high suicide rate especially among teens, in the land of the free & the home of the brave? What makes headlines? Good news? Ha! More depressing stories than anything else. I feel poetry takes an edge off the hurt of bad news while still delivering it but in a, “glitzy” sort of way. Giving a different perspective. Kind of like slap in the face as opposed to a knife in the back. At least with the slap you’ll live to see another day and you will know whom it’s from. I wasn’t here for the beginning of the world but at 59, I just might be here for the end.

Even though it’s still a knife, rhyme poetry helps to dull the blade. And that’s my job. You can write to Luke Easter at: lyricsfromlucas@aol.com
