Feb-20-2014 15:41TweetFollow @OregonNews Colorado Marijuana Tax Revenue Greatly Exceeds ExpectationsSalem-News.com"...the fact that prohibition empowers criminal gangs, undermines public safety and is ultimately ineffective beat tax revenue as compelling reasons in my mind." - Major Neill Franklin (Ret.), executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.
(DENVER) - Though official estimates expected about $70 million in tax revenue from marijuana sales annually in Colorado, after seven weeks of sales government officials now believe revenues will be closer to $98 million. That figure doesn't even include law enforcement and other savings, yet at a time when most states are choosing between cutting social programs or raising taxes or both, Colorado is having to decide what to do with an extra $28 million. It's pretty extraordinary, according to Major Neill Franklin (Ret.), executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. "Money isn't the best reason to legalize marijuana - the fact that prohibition empowers criminal gangs, undermines public safety and is ultimately ineffective beat tax revenue as compelling reasons in my mind - still, when was the last time you heard about a state receiving tens of millions of dollars in unexpected tax income? In this era of cutbacks, that money is going to change people's lives."
