I agree with the boringly redundant Olympia in regards to the fact that winter is indeed the best time to climb, BUT....that being said, even the most experienced climbers are, more often than not, stranded in situations due to their own mistakes. I love to climb, but what we do hardly saves the world...and for those and many other reasons, WE should have to pay the expense of our rescue. Period

Those who are not climbers don't know that winter is often one of the best times to climb - lower avalanche hazard as the days stay cold and don't melt the snow, then freeze again at night. For those of you who call the climbers 'morons' I would point you to a terrific Oregonian guest editorial on December 20, 2006 - a great article I will never forget. The writer was one of the rescue groups that first reached the survivors of the Oregon Episcopal School group that perished on Mt. Hood way back in 1986. Here the individual writes about their experience, and why people climb mountains, why we need more people like the three that recently died - and why we shouldn't charge climbers in order to them. It might warm a few (of your) cold hearts.

John: You don't sound like a climber. Winter is actually one of the best times to climb. Less avalanche hazard (as you generally don't get the warm days melting the snow, then freezing again at night). Lots of people climb during the winter. Also, you might read the Oregonian guest editorial piece by Terry Swicegood on December 20, 2006, about why people climb mountains, and why we shouldn't charge climbers to rescue them. He (or she) was one of the Portland Rescue Team members that rescued the remaining survivors of the Oregon Episcopal School group back in 1986. Here he (she) talks about the three climbers and why we need more people like them. Even your cold heart might be warmed.

No offense to most of you but you sit on your fat butts and wonder why those of us who dare to challenge ourselves attempt such a perilous outing in the dead of winter. It is for that very reason and you will never understand. I agree with having the parties pay their own rescue fee however.

what about the dog?

What about the dog ?

I am glad they are safe...but their actions to go up were foolish and put others at risk...not to mention the cost to the taxpayer to go get them.
Steve February 19, 2007 1:17 pm (Pacific time)
Not to sound heartless to the ordeals of the people, but I heard there was a dog with them. Did the dog make it?
Anonymous February 19, 2007 1:16 pm (Pacific time)
Another group of "adventurous" morons!!! When will people learn!!! I felt sorry for the dog. If they have that much time on their hands they should do volunteer work!! PLEASE - I hope Larry King doesn't waste time interviewing these idiots.

Are all of these folks being charged for their rescue expences. Climbeing in the middle of the winter not the smartest move is it?
