Snow Levels Drop and Oregon's Winter Continues

Risks increase as snow and hail hit the valley floor.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Suddenly, winter! A short snowstorm in the Portland area gave Oregonians a reminder that winter is far from over in the northwest.

According to the National Weather Service, rain showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon. Some of the storms could produce small hail, which Salem experienced for about ten minutes in the noon hour. The rest of the day is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high near 43, and south-southwest winds around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Rain and snow showers are likely after 10pm, while the snow level will drop from 700 feet to 200 feet. The low is only expected to be around 32 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60%, with new snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

On Thursday, rain and snow showers are again likely, becoming all snow after 4:00 p.m. The high should be near 45 throughout the day, with southwest winds between 3 and 9 mph. The chance of precipitation continues to be 60% with less than a half inch of snow expected through 10:00 pm. The low should be around 32. South wind around 9 mph.

A 30% chance of rain and snow showers on Friday with little or no snow accumulation expected throughout the day. It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. The snow level will be around 300 feet Friday night, with a low of 31 degrees.

The weekend begins with a slight chance of snow showers on Saturday, an expected high of 47. By Saturday night the snow level will be at about 600 feet, with a low around 36.

Sunday, a chance of snow showers continues with cloudy skies and a high near 45. On Sunday night rain showers are likely, snow level 400 feet, with a low around 34.

Monday night there is a chance of snow showers, with a low around 32.

Tuesday the chance of snow showers continues with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 44.
