Peter Pan, Great Value Peanut Butter Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

(ATLANTA ) - The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness).

The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number "2111."

Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra.

If consumers have any of this Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in their home that has been purchased since May 2006, they should discard it.

Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

In persons with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.

Individuals who have recently eaten Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 and have experienced any of these symptoms should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately.

FDA's warning is based on a just-completed epidemiological study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the states and local health agencies, which links 288 cases of foodborne illness in 39 states to consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter. This report was provided to FDA on February 13th.

The outbreak appears to be ongoing and the first consumer may have become ill in August 2006.

As a result of extensive epidemiological testing and recent case control studies, CDC was recently able to identify Peter Pan peanut butter as the likely cause of illness.

Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 is manufactured in the same plant as Peter Pan peanut butter and, thus, is believed to be at similar risk of contamination.

ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 that already was distributed.

The company will cease production until the exact cause of contamination can be identified and eliminated.

ConAgra will advise consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 in their possession.

To assist in this endeavor, FDA has sent investigators to ConAgra's processing plant in Sylvester, Georgia where the products are made to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for Salmonella Tennessee.

I had surgery due to the salmonella. So those of you who feel that sueing is wrong, you are right in most all cases..I however lost 1 month of work, have thousands of dollars in doctors, hospitals, tests, etc..Will you pay my bills and pain and suffering over what was negligence on Conagra's part? Would you like to eat my jar of peanut butter? I do not think that sueing is the answer to every little thing, as a matter a fact some cases are absolutely stupid..This case is very justified and still my job is on the line for missing so much work although they know I was sick with this. I had a body organ removed for goodness sake and Conagra knew of this problem for quite awhile..Wake up and smell the coffee..To those of you who appear to be "just get along" I have always done that...But, this is seriuos and it seems that there is a lot of this kind of stuff going on..I still have problems even smelling PB..What food or drink is next..So you so called do gooders...put yourself in my shoes and the families who actually lost a loved one to this...Keep your smart ass remarks to yourself if you do not know all the health issues some of us have suffered due to this outbreak!! I had five jars in my house with the product code 2111. All of the jars were just about empty. All of my children were sick but i thought they had a stomache virus. They eventually got well but I didnt I thought I was going to die. I was out of work for over three months going back and forth to doctors and nobody could tell me what was wrong with me. The doctors just put me on antibiotics because they knew it was an infection. I am so glad to be alive. I still feel weak but i am able to function and take care of my children.

Investigating this takes a lot of time and there have been proven deaths. My child being one of them. Continue eating your contaminated peanut butter and hopefully you'll get what you deserve someday. I'm sorry to anyone else who has experienced a loss like I have.

I live in Canada where they do not sell Peter Pan. I love the stuff and my girlfriend just brought me home 8 jars from Arizona. Yup it's all 2111 code. I called the 24 hour line but since I live in Canada I am SOL. I called Safeway in Scottsdale and the said I am SOL. The Canadian distributor of other Conagara products told me I am SOL. NO I AM NOT SOL. I need my Peter Pan fix and someone is going to give me 8 replacement jars dammit. Anyway I have eaten it and I feel fine. Hey get sick, lose some weight and I am stylin. I have never had been so sick with a low grade fever, and diarrhea for five days till I was bleeding from my rectum. I called my husband who was out of town and told him I did'nt have a clue till a week later my 17 year old daughter told me about the peanut butter scare and sure enough the number 2111 was on the jar I had been eating a couple of days before I became ill. I work in a hospital and sueing is a bit much but something sould be done as work was missed I was in so much pain and too embarrassed to go to the dr. for this.

well, I guess it's official, "the Columbian" newspapers on-line edition, serving Clark County, Washington.,say that Con-Agra Peanut butter with the 2111 code on the lid has the Salmonella bacteria!, and to add authenticity it quotes the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, has also confirmed this to be the case! I was informed on 15 Feb. by Salem-News, and didn't read about it anywhere else till today! omg, people! seriously. I have read all of these complaints and threats to sue, and i think it is just horrible. I live in ohio and have a "bad" jar of peter pan peanut butter, i have been eating it and have felt fine. here in ohio we are stuggling to keep jobs and companies. so has the country actually. But hey! we have a reason now to send another company out of business. Let's sue!!!! Yeah. Then millions of families will go on well fare and live off of our government because moms or dads will loose thier jobs because of cut backs in the Con-Agra loss. just think people. yes, some of you got sick, but not all of us. so maybe, just maybe do you think it could have been anything else? even if it was the penut butter, are you dead? Salmonella is not that strong of a virus. It can be, but i have yet to hear of any deaths. i guess i figured that america would have more decency to think out actions before actually acting. oh ya, thanks salem-news. i have just heard of this recall and went on to my local new net 5 site, and did not see anything about this anywhere on thier site. i am dissapointed in them. i wonder why i did not hear about this sooner, it seems to me that a lot of people have this product in thier homes and have no idea. I had the same problem just before Christmas and just now figured out what is wrong with me after speaking with a nurse about it and she said yes that is and was what happeded to me. I'm still having some problems with it, but, I'm thinking it is some better now, I don't think I ate much of it, and I'm sure glad I haven't opened it up scense then, my jar dose have the number 2111 on the lid.

Two days before it hit the news about Peter Pan peanut butter, I was in the emergency room with severe stomach pain, nausea, back pain and diarrhea. They said I had a virus, gave me meds and perscription and sent me home. I got some relief but it took about four days or more to totally get it out of my system. Was it the peanut butter. Yes, I had Peter Pan but it was in my pantry and unopened. Funny how I had the exact same symtoms that everyone who ate it says they had. Did the thought ever occur to them that they may have just had the same stomach virus I had. Many of these cases could be just coincidental. I would think twice before suing. Suing hurts a lot of people and not just the king pins. Think about it.

My 84 year old mother was sick in August, and needed to be hospitalized with all the symptoms of salmonella poisoning, but was treated for the stomach flu, she was again hospitalized in September with the same condition. She did eat Peter Pan and it probably was the culprit. How do we prove it now?

Yes I am angry also,I'm sick enough with out adding to the cause. I have a brain toumar, and theres nothing they can do till it does something to me. So I watch what I eat and eat only the good things. I have low blood sugar and drs. have told me to eat peanut butter when my suger is low, to bring it back up. So for the last 4mos. I have been makeing myself sick every time I have eatten it and was told it was the flu.I was not able to track it to the peanut butter until, 3 days before it came out on tv.Again I was sick thinking I couldnt get over this flu, that has hung on for 3or 4 mos.. I have 3 jars in my house I dont eat it every day and I guess thats a good thing. But this last time I have eatten it I have had diarria, head aches stomach cramps lower back pain, dizzy. I have become real weak. The dr. has told me it is not the tomur doing this. I even had to have a new mri to make sure the toumer was'nt growing, and it was'nt. Lets see what that cost my ins. company witch I don't think they should have to pay for.I don't beleive in lawsuits and in my 48 years of life I have not sued any one. I just got home from the hospital, after 5 days of severe stomach cramps, epic diarrhea, high fever, and lower back pain. I looked in my kitchen cupboard; and sure enough, the serial number on my half-eaten, recently purchased jar of Peter Pan Crunchy Peanut Butter indeed starts with 2111. Guess what? I am definitely going to sue. I had to use up 4 sick days. I missed my production goal, jeopardized my job, felt total misery and pain (I am still experiencing symptoms, although I think I may finally be getting better), and looked like a damned hypochondriac in front of my doctors, who actually had to release me from the hospital without a diagnosis. I have Aetna HealthFund; and people who have that insurance know that I will be paying co-pays and deductibles in the thousands for this episode? Am I only going to sue for my dollars spent? Hell no! I am going to sue for that and a whole lot more. Is it because I am greedy? Perhaps to some degree, yes. But there is an important principle involved in levying punitive damages for even a limited incidence of negligence, such as an incident where the manufacturer had the good fortune to affect relatively few - hundreds rather than millions - of individuals. There must be grave financial consequences for a company that has the misfortune to f--k up in this way, because money is the only language that corporations (the world over) understand. If the guilty corporations were able to favorably balance costs for these incidences against settlements, what motivation would they have to maintain ever vigilant quality control if they just had to pay the medical bills and lost wages of those few hundred plaintiffs - saving millions of dollars to implement the highest sanitary standards money can buy? Sorry, guys I am suing the pants off those poor unfortunate ConAgra people. And you should be glad that others will do so as well. Without these occasional slaps on the wrist, our food manufacturers could easily slip back into the greedy amorality of the early 20th century American manufacturers, about whom Upton Sinclair, the famous muckraker, wrote that book we were all supposed to read in high school, The Jungle. Even if you don’t remember reading the book, you most likely remember the story where the plant worker’s thumb was accidentally ground up into the sausage? That was from The Jungle. Forcing corporations to pay through the nose for these unfortunate incidents motivates them to constantly strive to maintain only the highest standards. Salmonella is not a really strong virus. Heat will kill it. That's the reason they tell you to eat only well cooked eggs or poultry. Heat kills the virus, so the peanut butter is probably safe if used in baked or cooked products. So if you ate the peanut butter in something that was heated completely to a temperature above 170 degrees you probably killed the salmonella. If you made cookies, as long as they were baked completely, and no raw cookie dough was consumed, the virus was probably killed.

Since it came out in the news he has realized that he has felt the worse when eating peanut butter. Yes, the jar had the code 2111. We have a tub in our home with the 2111 code that is half empty and I'm not sure anyone got sick. We absolutely love this product. The thing is in this country (Guyana, South America) I haven't heard of any cases of people getting sick so far. I'm also schocked to know that it has reached so far down south.

I just came home to find a jar of Peter Pan with the numbers 2111! My first response is fear. The second is loved ones who have eaten it. The third is educate myself on what to do in case of an emergency with my loved ones or myself. So I go on here and get what? The same "Bull Crap" that we allow to repeat itself over and over and over, "BEND OVER" and pay for it yourself! Not only did you loose our family as customers for LIFE, then you ask my family to use their hard earned money to end there fears and seek medical advice. Well you can take this Jar of 2111 and serve it to your families. Let me know how that goes. As It Has Been Proven. I just found out that I have half a jar of peanut butter in my cabinet that has the 2111 number on top> No, I am not going to run out and get a lawyer. No, I am not dying! Yes, I ate half the jar since I purchased it. Did it make me sick? I don't think so. But if it did, if I weren't ruined for the rest of my life, I would just get over it and go buy a good jar of peanut butter! No one has tried to poison anyone on purpose. This was not intentional, and doesn't need to be a way for someone to get rich at the cost of someone else. If you aren't sick, then just take the lid in and get a new jar.

I, too, have a large jar of peter pan peanut butter in the 2111 lot. Peanut butter is the main source of protein in my 2-1/2 year olds diet. The jar is almost empty. She has complained of belly hurting of late. Could this be the culprit?

THREE NIGHTS AGO I WAS SO SICK I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE.I JUST HAPPENED TO OPEN A BRAND NEW PEANUT BUTTER WITH THE PRODUCT CODE 2111 AND ATE THREE HEAPING SPOONS FULL BEFORE THE ILNESS STRUCK.I THOUGHT IT WAS A STRONG VIRUS, BUT AFTER WATCHING THE NEWS I DONT THINK IT IS A STRONG VIRUS.WOW!!!!! BE VERY CAREFULL I HAD A VERY HIGH FEVER,REPORITORY PROBLEMS OUT OF BREATH AND OUT OF IT COULD ONLY STAY AWAKE FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS....BE VERY CAREFULL HITS HARD AND FAST, PLEASE WATCH OUT FOR ANY YOUNG CHILDREN WITH WEAK IMUNE SYSTEMS....THANKS ANDREW, AUBURN CALIFORNIA

I ate some of the Petter pan Peanut Butter with 2111 on the lid...I did not get sick, but now i'm scared...lol...I sure wish I would of known about this sooner.

is this the same company or conglomerate that supplies military rations to the govt. contractors? I recall these tins of peanut butter from Georgia in our C-rats a few years ago., right after the Revolution. So maybe a more far reaching problem?

send the entire 2111 consignment to the Taliban! drop peanut butter not bombs!.,we could wipe out the whole upcoming "spring offensive" with one airlift of grilled beagle ears on a stick,(shishkabob style is traditional to region according to recent "intel")dipped in Peter Pan!,dropped from my spiffy new C-130 Hercules w/detachable stern ramp! I know it's a mild form of "bacterial warfare" but come on!, here's our chance to really make a statemant to those ragheads!, I mean it's a silver platter opportunity is it not?

If anyone has eaten this brand of peanut butter and does not feel well they should contact a doctor. If you are a kid reading this, please tell your parents and if they don't know what you are talking about, show them the article.

I ate Peter Pan peanut butter and I got sick. That stinks because Peter Pan used to be my favorite.

what can salmonella do to you...? can you die from it cuz my brother has direhea and its scaring me so it would be nice to know if it could kill you so i can get some help for him!!

Isn't salmonella caused from raw chicken or raw eggs? How did this contamination come about?
