(SALEM, Ore.) - Many of you who follow our work understand that we have a tendency to turn remote informational trails into six lane freeways. As we wallow through the mire of news, I wanted to share a few thoughts about why we cover certain topics. We began covering medical marijuana seriously years ago when other media outlets still cringed at the idea. Look at what has taken place; 14 states have approved medicinal marijuana, cannabis business is on its way toward possibly being one of the nation's largest industries, and, as long as Monsanto and the GMO companies keep their paws off the strains, hemp serves to return to the forefront as the well-proven natural, non-polluting agricultural savior. With the help of our mentor Dr. Phil Leveque, we have published hundreds of educational articles on this burning subject. This is an example of what you support when you help us. Our reports about the toxic contamination of the old El Toro Marine Corps base in Southern California during the summer of 2008. At that point Lennar Homes was moving forward with a plan to build expensive subdivisions on that once-proud wasteland. Then we met the leaders in the movement to expose similar toxicity problems at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Now the idea of a housing subdivision at El Toro is forever tainted by the truths exposed via our reports which rank highly on Google and everywhere else online. Now, writer Robert O'Dowd has assembled a book loaded with the information we have turned up from a very long list of sources; which includes a good amount of previously unpublished material. It is all about reaching the Marines who served there, their families, and the civilians who worked on the base and live near it today, and advising them of the possible health hazards. This is all a result of the intense work of Salem-News.com. This is another example of what you support when you help us. We have shared monumental news too, including the non-toxic cure for cancer, developed by Dr. Burzynski in Texas and kicking off a decades-long fight with the FDA. The fight continues, and this is one we all have a stake in. We also have taken on the big pharma companies with our dismay over the ongoing deaths due to use as prescribed, and over-prescribing of the narcotic Oxycodone. We discuss many subjects that are uncomfortable, or difficult. Being uncomfortable is not an acceptable reason to not be informed. The facts behind the common ritual of male circumcision, and less-common female genital mutilation, are definitely worth knowing. We believe that 2011 is the year for the most positive change the world has seen for decades. And we are working hard to stay an integral part of the development of new media for years to come. So here it is; if you care about us, please consider Salem-News.com in advertising your business, non-profit, or special events/causes; or please simply donate (CLICK HERE). We exist on very little and yet we constantly expose the truth to a sometimes hostile world. As we grow there is one thing I can say with certainty; the truth will grow also. Now is the time, we have six solid years of news published seven days a week to our credit, but we need to cover costs to operate and we appreciate your help. Help us keep doing what we do. Thanks- from the whole team. Click HERE, or mail to: More about Salem-News.com We support our troops. That means not forgetting about them when they've returned from active duty. We believe in standing for the rights of mankind, from our Civil Rights to the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Freedom of the Press is the First Amendment for a good reason, because without it there is no democracy. We think fairness has a place in this world, and "doing the right thing" should be typical, not outside the norm. Though these important subjects are addressed regularly on Salem-News.com, it is true that this last year we have dedicated much of our space to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. We love people of all faiths and together we tell the story of Israeli occupation and oppression and some day when that epic saga ends, we will be able to concentrate our energies elsewhere. For now, thank you for your generosity. _________________________________________________________

"Anon": True definition of Republic makes your statement seem to be somewhat in error, sir. Here's definition as stated in Random House Unabridged --the big/book source of truth: "A state in which the supreme power rests in the body of the citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by represen-atives chosen directly or indirectly by them." SO your working information needs rapid review and forced-change in meaning, unless you intend to distort what we find in the world authoity for word/meanings.

Thanks Salem-news, I will do what I can. May I take just a moment to mention something somewhat troubling me. I hear the word "democracy" quite frequently. Anyone that studies history knows democracy never works. It always turns into tyranny. 51% telling the 49% what to do? All anyone has to do is buy the media (which they have done), and they got the 51%. Thus, whoever has the most money makes the rules. Nobody to protect the poor, property rights, free speech etc. This is why the founding fathers started this country as a Republic. Basic inalienable rights for all, not just for the rich as in a democracy. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Bill Moyers said it strikingly on Truthout last evening: "George Orwell had warned six decades ago that the corrosion of language goes hand in hand with the corruption of democracy. If he were around today, he would remind us that 'like the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket,' this kind of propaganda engenders a 'protective stupidity' almost impossible for facts to penetrate. But you, my colleagues, can't give up. If you do, there's no chance any public memory of everyday truths - the tangible, touchable, palpable realities so vital to democracy - will survive. We would be left to the mercy of the agitated amnesiacs who ‘make’ their own reality, as one of them boasted at the time America invaded Iraq, in order to maintain their hold on the public mind and the levers of power."

Tim et al: Boils down, really, to CHOICE. WE CAN MAKE THE WORLD OVER, if we so choose...by building better, deeper understandings of each other and of pertinent forces, trends, issues, problems --and SOLUTIONS. THAT'S the true mission of real work in journalism, demanding effort via full exchange of opinion and its supporting factual basis. Salem-News has demonstrated the absolute continuing demand for that kind of open-channel, impacting event and issue and problem worldwide. It offers those of us who participate a huge satisfaction via reasoned and reasonable dissent, while that process provides multiplied, multiplying rewards for discerning, reasonable readers. GO, Tim/Bon, GO !!!
