Magnetic Polar Shifts Causing Massive Global Superstorms

Superstorms can also cause certain societies, cultures or whole countries to collapse. Others may go to war with each other.

(CHICAGO) - NASA has been warning about it…scientific papers have been written about it…geologists have seen its traces in rock strata and ice core samples…

Now "it" is here: an unstoppable magnetic pole shift that has sped up and is causing life-threatening havoc with the world's weather.

Forget about global warming—man-made or natural—what drives planetary weather patterns is the climate and what drives the climate is the sun's magnetosphere and its electromagnetic interaction with a planet's own magnetic field.

When the field shifts, when it fluctuates, when it goes into flux and begins to become unstable anything can happen. And what normally happens is that all hell breaks loose.

Magnetic polar shifts have occurred many times in Earth's history. It's happening again now to every planet in the solar system including Earth.

The magnetic field drives weather to a significant degree and when that field starts migrating superstorms start erupting.

The first evidence we have that the dangerous superstorm cycle has started is the devastating series of storms that pounded the UK during late 2010.

On the heels of the lashing the British Isles sustained, monster storms began to lash North America. The latest superstorm — as of this writing — is a monster over the U.S. that stretched across 2,000 miles affecting more than 150 million people.

Yet even as that storm wreaked havoc across the Western, Southern, Midwestern and Northeastern states, another superstorm broke out in the Pacific and closed in on Australia.

The southern continent had already dealt with the disaster of historic superstorm flooding from rains that dropped as much as several feet in a matter of hours. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. After the deluge tiger sharks were spotted swimming between houses in what was once a quiet suburban neighborhood.

Shocked authorities now numbly concede that much of the water may never dissipate and have wearily resigned themselves to the possibility that region will now contain a new inland sea.

But then only a handful of weeks later another superstorm; the megamonster cyclone Yasi, struck northeastern Australia. The damage it left in its wake is being called by rescue workers a war zone.

The incredible superstorm packed winds near 190mph. Although labeled as a category-5 cyclone, it was theoretically a category-6. The reason for that is storms with winds of 155mph are considered category-5, yet Yasi was almost 22 percent stronger than that.

Yet Yasi may only be a foretaste of future superstorms. Some climate researchers, monitoring the rapidly shifting magnetic field, are predicting superstorms in the future with winds as high as 300 to 400mph.

The possibility more storms like Yasi or worse will wreak havoc on our civilization and resources is found in the complicated electromagnetic relationship between the sun and Earth. The synergistic tug-of-war has been compared by some to an intricately constructed cat's cradle. And it's in a constant state of flux.

The sun's dynamic, ever-changing electric magnetosphere interfaces with the Earth's own magnetic field affecting, to a degree, the Earth's rotation, precessional wobble, dynamics of the planet's core, its ocean currents and—above all else—the weather.

The Earth's northern magnetic pole was moving towards Russia at a rate of about five miles annually. That progression to the East had been happening for decades.

Suddenly, in the past decade the rate sped up. Now the magnetic pole is shifting East at a rate of 40 miles annually, an increase of 800 percent. And it continues to accelerate.

Recently, as the magnetic field fluctuates, NASA has discovered "cracks" in it. This is worrisome as it significantly affects the ionosphere, troposphere wind patterns, and atmospheric moisture. All three things have an effect on the weather.

Worse, what shields the planet from cancer-causing radiation is the magnetic field. It acts as a shield deflecting harmful ultra-violet, X-rays and other life-threatening radiation from bathing the surface of the Earth. With the field weakening and cracks emerging, the death rate from cancer could skyrocket and mutations of DNA can become rampant.

Another federal agency, NOAA, issued a report caused a flurry of panic when they predicted that mammoth superstorms in the future could wipe out most of California. The NOAA scientists said it's a plausible scenario and would be driven by an "atmospheric river" moving water at the same rate as 50 Mississippi rivers flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Economist wrote a detailed article about the magnetic field and what's happening to it. In the article they noted:

"There is, however, a growing body of evidence that the Earth's magnetic field is about to disappear, at least for a while. The geological record shows that it flips from time to time, with the south pole becoming the north, and vice versa. On average, such reversals take place every 500,000 years, but there is no discernible pattern. Flips have happened as close together as 50,000 years, though the last one was 780,000 years ago. But, as discussed at the Greenland Space Science Symposium, held in Kangerlussuaq this week, the signs are that another flip is coming soon."

Discussing the magnetic polar shift and the impact on weather, the scholarly paper "Weather and the Earth's magnetic field" was published in the journal Nature. Scientists too are very concerned about the increasing danger of superstorms and the impact on humanity.

Superstorms will not only damage agriculture across the planet leading to famines and mass starvation, they will also change coastlines, destroy cities and create tens of millions of homeless.

A Danish study published in the scientific journal Geology, found strong correlation between climate change, weather patterns and the magnetic field.

"The earth's climate has been significantly affected by the planet's magnetic field, according to a Danish study published Monday that could challenge the notion that human emissions are responsible for global warming.

"'Our results show a strong correlation between the strength of the earth's magnetic field and the amount of precipitation in the tropics,' one of the two Danish geophysicists behind the study, Mads Faurschou Knudsen of the geology department at Aarhus University in western Denmark, told the Videnskab journal.

"He and his colleague Peter Riisager, of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), compared a reconstruction of the prehistoric magnetic field 5,000 years ago based on data drawn from stalagmites and stalactites found in China and Oman."

According to some geologists and scientists, we have left the last interglacial period behind us. Those periods are lengths of time—about 11,500 years—between major Ice Ages.

One of the most stunning signs of the approaching Ice Age is what's happened to the world's precessional wobble.

As explained in the geology and space science website earthchangesmedia.com, "The Chandler wobble was first discovered back in 1891 by Seth Carlo Chandler an American astronomer.

The effect causes the Earth's poles to move in an irregular circle of 3 to 15 meters in diameter in an oscillation. The Earth's Wobble has a 7-year cycle which produces two extremes, a small spiraling wobble circle and a large spiraling wobble circle, about 3.5 years apart.

This is stretching my imagination ~ which is pretty stretchable ~ into views of unpleasantnesses I would prefer to leave alone. We all need to face realities and do what is good for Life. Are we all going to sit around and rot? I'd rather understand what's happening and DO things, thank you. We need to do whatever we can. Are the ones predicting all this also comforting us with things we might DO? Or are we to become another "fallen civilization" as so many before us? Perhaps some of their demises were the result of climactic changes? From what I've read that's been discovered about some of those civilizations past, they were extremely aware and intelligent peoples..far more so than our civilization! (way to go Bush and "nucular") Yet, some of them seemed to have been "left in the lurch" so to speak. Could that have been a climactic change that suddenly engulfed them? I'd rather learn to leave my body, thank you. Have peace of mind all of you and give out good energy...if we all do that, there'll be some kind of change for the good! But modern science has not really CHANGED anything. The laws that govern the heavens and the earth are higher than any man can reach. Even Einstein knew that much. Anyone, and I mean anyone at ALL who is vain enough to believe that "science" rules is in for a surprise. Scientists like to tell themselves that the scientific method has ushered in a final anthropological evolution of mankind's perception of the world; that scientific thinking annihilates fear of the unknown. Vain scientists are hood-winking themselves. The Great Unknown will always be and will not ever vanish away into a perfect understanding of all things everywhere all the time. Does the passage of "time" flow at the same rate as it does 15 billion light-years from here? Until we get there and take a measurement, there is no way to be sure. It has already been proven that the magnetosphere, protector from solar wind radiation, has massive holes in it just like the ozone layer. As Gaia spins a thousand mph. through space with a molten core that has a shivering fever and massive earthquakes and monster storms to prove it, we face an uncertain ominous future wherein PC ignorant bliss can't spin the truth. With any reasonable deduction of logic, reason or common sense, how can one not come to the firm meteorological conclusion that drastic changes in atmospheric polarity or magnetism would directly affect weather systems and explain the millennial climate change chaos? Establishment science pedants tend to ignore the obvious since robot sheep who live in a perfect world refuse to believe they are vulnerable to natural fate. Status and position is supposed to save and protect academic snobs from reality. Like 1st class passengers on the Titanic, the sinking of our so called best and brightest would mean that if our end days loom they would be equal to the rest of us. And so they can't come to terms with that or the threat of climate change. The hallmark of mainstream scientific research is that it must adhere to political correctness at the expense of truth. And that means a state of status quo denial in the "expert" media. Dismissing the worst saves jobs and feel good disinfo for the short term. It could be a gradual shift at 40 kilometers a year or it could go hay wire. The ozone layer will protect us from most of the suns damaging rays. We KNOW that we were recently told that every zodiac sign was wrong and had been changed. 2. I'm going back to the Bible to try to understand the passage in Matthew which states, "Men will fall dead from fear at the things which will walk upon the earth". I'm going back to the Bible and I will take consolation with the fact that all these things mean that Jesus will return soon and I will do exactly as He said, "Do not be troubled when these things come to pass... as they must come to pass before The Son of Man returns." And I will admit, I have been a Christian for over 30 years and in my mind I can not for the life of me figure out how Jesus plans to return to earth, where He is now, nor do I understand how He 'lives' where He lives. The crazy weather isnt a surprize or shock to us who read the Bible because unlike Nostradomus it remains true at 100 percent. Yes to those who feel 2012 and the Mayan calander is coming true like the movie portrayed by Hollywierd well its coming true but as Bible Prophecy fulfillment. Luke 21:25 is a great verse describing extreme weather prior to the return of Christ as does the rest of that chapter, Matthew 24, and book of Revelation. My Feb. 11 comment had 2 typographical errors. It should have read experiment in the early 1900's and the downward flow of energy in the primary arch creates the high pressure area and the clockwise winds via adding to the pull of gravity on molecules of air. the coriolis effect does not explain the incredible speed of the wind around a tornado or a hurricane. And, note that in these events there is an exceptional display of lightning. Also, the upper jet winds that blow eastward 300 mph faster than the ground speed of the Earth's rotation cannot be caused by the coriolis effect. This can only be created by the secondary swirling magnetic field current flowing around the core mass of the Earth.

I'm not an expert on magnetic pole shifts; however, I do know one thing about this writer. He has produced an impressive array of grossly inaccurate, highly sensationalistic, and politically motivated articles. In the past, many people -- scientists and science writers -- have questioned his sources -- including the people he had quoted (it should be noted that he took most, if not all, his information from secondary sources). Worst yet, his articles have a tendency to contradict each other. Does he believe global warming is hoax or not? I can tell from his collective work. All I know is that he that he supports the views of the Tea Party and some strange fringe groups (seriously, google his name). Sadly, I suspect Terrence likes the publicity rather than writing authentic and accurate articles. I guess what really matters to him is having his stories go viral. And as long as there's anyone gullible enough to print it, he'll get his way. Too bad it will be the readers who will lose. Oh, how we forget the lessons of Janet Cooke so quickly.

I am Australian and while Cylcone Yasi was predicted to leave an army of dead bodies in its wake and to be unlike anything we had seen before in Australia, the predictions Failed to materialize. Or didn't the news tell you that? Sure we had a cyclone twice the size the destructive one, but size did not amount to crushing intensity. I stayed up all night listening to local radio and have to say that even the radio station had to squash its disappointment there were not tales of incredible devastation to report the day after. In fact the flooding at Toowoomba weeks before was truly terrible and far more destructive with especially the toll of human life. The media has a vested interest in sensationalism. We forget that this trait is probably antihuman.

A laboratory experiment in the early 1000's proved that a strong current flowing through a wire produces a magnetic field swirling around it - always clockwise. If you imagine a magnetic field current arch between a high and low pressure area, the swirling magnetic field it produces would produce the clockwise swirl around the upward flowing primary current and the counterclockwise swirl around the low pressure area as viewed from above. This has normally been attributed to the coriolis effect. However, the Earth rotates and a consistent speed while the winds around the high and low pressure areas rotate at a speed consistent with the intensity of the high and low pressure areas.

I’m not a nihilist, or a fatalist, I’m a realist. I don’t believe in prophecy or prophets such as Eager Casey, Nostradamus, 2012 predictions or the Book of Revelations. But I can see that humanity is in deep trouble and the tides of history will eventually crush us. Why? It’s a downfall that started 10,000 years ago but the end result is inevitable and now accelerating—no matter the optimistic dreamers or science— all species do fall. Let us not forget the collapse of the mega-fauna just 13,000 years ago. And let’s face it; scientists are subject to the same social-political forces that affect us all. The one hope people had was a paradigm shift in the function of the human mind. Last I checked it was 40 kilometers not miles. My resarch indicated that without the magnetic sheild we should be fine. Some of the sun rays will get in but not enough to really affect us. The weather is a sound concern and where the poles land is the other. I live in central CA so I'm worried about earthquakes being unleashed becuase excessive snowfall in the mountains.

This seems to be the author’s area of competence. The editor seems to take a lot of pride in the fact that the article disturbed people and made them think. That is an absurd justification for publishing this nonsense! It is not hard to write something that disturbs peoples comfort zones, but any old crud that comes under that heading does not deserve to be published! From a geologist: Magnetic flips occur, on the short side, hundreds of thousands of years. Ice age and warming cycles occur in thousands to tens of thosands of years. There have been several ice ages with no polar flips in the last 100k years. Besides, you'll be hard pressed to locate weather evidence from the last polar flip to support this relationship. Any binding of the two is simply hearsay, pasting together non-common factoids taken out of context. Careful, you'll have people making movies about California falling into the Pacific before long.

DJ: Three points: First, the business with the emails was irresponsibly blown all out of proportion by ill-educated journalists looking for sensational headlines to attach to their bylines. A later investigation found nothing amiss, no ethics violations or dishonesty. That part wasn't covered very well which is why you still remember the allegations and give them credence.

We are over-due for a polar shift. The first few lines of the story are fact, as for the superstorms, I don't know, sounds like it would make sense, but as far as I knew, a polar shift would only affect us if it happened at the exact moment a major solar flare came at us, other than that, only mild power outages from the minor (compared to a massive solar flare) radiation hitting us on a daily basis that out magnetosphere protects us from. At least that was my knowledge until this article. I'll have to do some more research before I buy into the superstorm theory

Before commenting, I actually read all the cited articles (except for the Nature article - sorry I'm not paying that kind of money just to read one paper). I fail to find a correlation between the magnetic "super-storms" and the weather storms... except for the word "storm". Had the author bothered to read past the abstracts cited, or stepped out of his windowless bomb shelter to actually interview any of the scientists cited as his sources, he would have heard that his hypothesis was in error. In this case, 2+2 does NOT equal 666. Mr. Editor you stated "understand that a journalist does not have the ability to test a scientific method". This is true, but A JOURNALIST has a DUTY to ensure that the facts are truthful and correlate to the story and suppositions made within. Had anyone from S-N (with a Journalism degree or anyone with more than a sports deck assignment for a High School newspaper) bothered to fact-check this article, they should have rejected it for publication. But then journalistic integrity isn't exactly what S-N is known for. That is sad. Mr. Editor, your thin-skinned comments have shown that you value how your "newspaper" is perceived. Right now, from the comments received, you are largely viewed as a laughing stock. And because of that, you are getting a large number of page-views from people coming for their daily laugh at the absurd. I know what I just said must have grated on you. I urge you to take a giant step forward in journalistic integrity. This article wasn't a HOT items. This article is a bit alarmist and contains some junk science. That having been written, we are in fact about due for a pole shift and the end of the interglacial. Very few jurisdictions have contingency plans to cope with the inevitable end of the Holocene Optimum, while interestingly, many have ones to cope with "Global Warming" and "sea level increase." Now tell me, which would be more deadly and costly, AGW / sea level increase, or, the end of the Holocene Optimum? If you need to think about this for more the two seconds, you need to learn about the Geological and Fossil Records. As some Greens I know would say, nature bats last.

Never before have we had the type of technology, and now acceleration of technology. Our entire economy has been connected globally now. Food and Water sources are getting more and more scarce. There are things like the yellowstone super volcano that are lurking in the shadows. We still don't know if an sizable asteroid will in fact impact the earth again. Our entire world and way of life has become so fragile and interconnected that I liken it to a high stakes game of Jenga. The wooden bricks represent everything from bees pollinating crops, to the energy crisis, to the absence of non-nuclear warfare. If we keep allowing these things to slip away from us and our control, then the sooner the whole thing will come crashing down like a Jenga tower. Everything is so fragile and interconnected. It only takes ONE thing to spark a wildfire within our global civilization, a fire that could spread across the world in a matter of minutes. The energy crisis is looking at us right smack in the face and we refuse to acknowledge it. Same thing with the global economy. If the US has another economic disaster, which it will because that is how our economic system was designed, then we cannot just keep printing more paper money that has to true value. People who think these are all independent issues are wrong. These are issues that are all connected, and we are connected to them. We may have created a fantastic, and advanced society and civilization, but we also made it so fragile that I liken it to a microchip being ruined by a grain of sand. All these people commenting on how these things are not possible, or the people scoffing at this article, are partly to blame for any future collapse of our global civilization. Their complacency has allowed the governments to so virtually anything they want. These people, who can only imagine grave problems when the problems actually arrive at their doorstep, are going to wonder what happened while the rest of us are running around saying "I told you so."

All these comments remind me of the same type of people who proclaim the earth to be 5000 years old. They scoff at any suggestion from scientific data, and accuse the writer of being a part of some conspiracy to fear monger. The fact of the matter is that we humans have only been living in civilization for 10,000 years. When the earth is proved to be over 4 billion years old, it is hard for me to believe a future scenario where we DON'T face the forces of nature. The topic of the earths magnetosphere and it's connection to life on earth is nothing new to science. But it does not surprise me that people refuse to even see it as a possibility. Everyone commenting about how they themselves have researched this and that fail to give any evidence that would rebuff the claim that our magnetic poles are a significant part the way the earth functions and that it may be affecting the weather and climate. More leaps are made by the people commenting than the writer, by far.

The cause of them isn't really material. The really scary stuff may not happen next year, but over the Earth's history some pretty nasty climate shifts have happened. They will continue to happen. Put your head in sand and call this fearmongering if you want. This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to comment on a news article. The author misleads many facts that need to be clarified. One in particular... The Author states: "The incredible superstorm packed winds near 190mph. Although labeled as a category-5 cyclone, it was theoretically a category-6. The reason for that is storms with winds of 155mph are considered category-5, yet Yasi was almost 22 percent stronger than that." My comment on this: There is a HUGE difference between "wind gusts" and "Sustained winds" when talking about a hurricane. Although I am not downplaying the destructive force of a Category 4 hurricane/cyclone this storm was in no way a Category 6, it was not even a Category 5 on the Saphir-Simpson Scale. The sustained winds of this storm were 144 MPH, not 190 MPH. There may have been wind gusts up to 190 MPH but that is typical for a lage hurricane. Is this a tabloid newspaper? Where does the author get his facts? There is something called Google. Try doing a search on Hurricanes next time you write an article about them.

By the way, I'm a well respected geophysicist and I publish in and review papers for several of the top peer-reviewed journals on this topic.

Editor: Come on, ashamed? I'm really sorry that this article makes people so emotional. It isn't always a clear or traditional trail J; can you give it that much? I expect some scientists will have a hard time letting go of pre-determined theories, however there is plenty of supporting data. But, if a person refuses to search it out in legitimacy they will remain perpetually in the dark by choice. My suggestion is to understand that a journalist does not have the ability to test a scientific method. Change is afoot, whether driven by the sun or by humans. The Arctic weather system this year split in half, creating two big ridges, one over Alaska, the other on the Northern tip of Labrador and Quebec. Usually there is just one big weak high over the pole, fenced off by the Jet Stream. This year there were two, with a hole in the middle. This hole allowed cold Arctic air to reach Texas and Florida. It ran into a wall of extra-wet and climate empowered air coming from the Gulf of Mexico. That swirling torrent dropped, in repeated extreme precipitation events, record snow all over the East Coast. I've tunneled into the books and talked to scientists. This is new phenomena.

Right. Been working on the magnetic pole shift idea, and it is indeed happening. It is entirely possible that the magnetic pole may mostly seem to disappear (Though, not completely.). And it is possible that the human race will be exterminated if we don't do something fast!!! And by "Fast", I mean within the next 25,000 years. Being an Astronomer (Which requires extensive knowledge about Geology), I realize that these things can happen. And, for the most part, what the writer of the article said was actually true. What the writer of the article failed to mention is the time-frame this stuff happens in. First, there is the super-storms. They happen on average in various bursts every fourteen years or so. Five hundred years later, the pole shift begins to accelerate. Within the next two thousand years, the magnetic pole is briefly negligible! We've got some time to get off this hazardous rock. Also, to 2012-ers: LOL.

I totally agree!! Its as simple principals that function with our own body. If we get out of routine it causes us to get sick or catch a cold, it is happening the same way as our planets. This is why these storms are happening at catastrophic levels, even earthquakes that are happening in the middle of the pacific where there’s no fault line. I stumbled across this article when I noticed it linked to my Google News page. Thankfully, it is 90% garbage. I have actually done research in magnetospheric physics for over a decade, so I know a little bit about this topic. The earth's magnetic field is important for a number of reasons, but shifts in its orientation are NOT strongly coupled to weather patterns at the surface. The author of this story has made up most of the claims out of thin air by misunderstanding several journal articles. For example, "superstorms" in magnetospheric physics have nothing to do with atmospheric storms. Anyone working in this field of research knows that. Please disregard this article. Pole shifts and reversals have -- as the article admits -- happened frequently in our planet's past. And they don't correlate to any mass extinction events that would be expected to accompany the sort of catastrophic changes Aym fantasizes.

The superstorm says the NOAA "predicts" is simply a plausible, hypothetical storm. NOAA thinks these occur on cycles of 100 years or so. The last one hit California in 1861. I'm sure you remember from your history classes, how that storm wiped out life in California.

Salem-News.com should be sued for publishing such alarmist tripe.

This article seems almost intended to "take the heat off" man-made global warming. I can't find any solid correlation between weather and magnetic pole shifts, except on right-wing conspiracy sites like Alex Jones, etc. This is ripe for an excuse to dismiss climate change as the cause of bad weather, and I'm sure it will become another tool in the deniers' kit-bag. Sunlight affects weather far more than magnetism, and this whole article is probably bogus.

Within our limited knowledge of the Universe and the apparent physical laws that have been observed we can say that there is a force at work that attempts to balance the relationship between all things. The measurement of entropy is a good example. But entropy is a measure within a so called isolated system. If we consider the earth and its atmosphere the isolated system, then the entropy of earth becomes more stable as time goes on – unless there is an outside influence that affects the temperature, pressure, volume, or density of the isolated system. If human activity affects any of the four elements of entropy then we can expect to see a reaction in some form or other as the system attempts to reestablish equilibrium. If we think in terms of our atmosphere being in chemical balance then any increase or decrease of the chemical elements will cause a natural force towards equilibrium. These natural forces may be mild or violent depending on the imbalance. Examples of this can be readily seen in simple chemistry classroom experiments. If we consider the increase of chemical elements into our atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels as an imbalance then we have to give credence to the hypothesis that a force of change will occur. Add to this the possible changes outside the isolated system, such as the sun, can affect the entropy of the earth, then we will certainly see the forces of equilibrium at work. The difference between a good mechanic and a poor mechanic can often be measured in the differences in their troubleshooting abilities. The same goes for scientists. The major difference between the two disciplines is the amount of information available to discern the cause of the problem. Needless to say a mechanic has far less elements of information to work with, but even if the mechanic does not have all the information or does not use all the information available, he will most likely not find the cause of the problem and he will most likely continue to repair the symptoms. Scientists do not have all the elements of information. There are just too many deep mysteries in our Universe and too many variables to prove anything with absolute certainty. Thus we are left with scientific guesses that are often proved through trial and error until the perceived absolute certainty arrives. I say perceived certainty because what we perceive to be true may not be true at all. No matter how objective we think we are, we are not. We are subjective beings to the core and this is why one of us will vote for and admire Obama or Bush, and the other will not vote for and abhor Obama or Bush. Take the argument about global warming. Why it is one element of our society believes wholeheartedly in the theory and the other segment thinks it is hogwash is itself a mystery. There are certainly loads of information supporting the theory of global warming and loads of information supporting the debunking of global warming. Then why is it some believe it is true and a problem while others think it is false and is not a problem? It all boils down to subjectivity and the freedom to choose. And subjectivity is determined by more factors than one can imagine. But you can bet your last dollar that fear is lurking somewhere in the recesses of the mind on both sides of the issue. Nobody can tell the future and nobody will ever tell the future. All telling of the future is nothing more than guessing, or hypothesizing, utilizing the tools and information we have at hand. But, even our tools and information we use changes from day to day, and thus our predictions change. There is only one constant we have, and that is fear. Fear has been with us from day one and continues to influence everything we do. But I have to ask you, “Do you think any of the great discoveries in math and science, medicine, engineering, or physics, have been accomplished while the discoverer was in a state of fear? In the absence of fear we access an area of our being where the answers exist. Whether it be of divine nature or the parts of the brain we say are not being used, whatever your persuasion, it is crucial to work in the absence of fear. The author of this article should be admired for his audacity to write an article that will surely bring him some praise and plenty ridicule. On the other hand his use of adjectives that cultivate fear is in question. But he is certainly not alone here. The use of fear to get people to do something is as common as fried chicken at a 4th of July picnic. Just beware that when we go into fear we isolate ourselves from that part of us that has the answers.

Much of what is presented in this article is pseudo-science. The Earth's core is a giant rotating mass of iron and other trace elements. For the magnetic field to change in any significant way, the core's rotation would need to stop. There are few things which have a sufficient amount of energy to affect the rotation of the core. The most likely event would be a collision with a planetary body. Fortunately, the chances of this happening at this stage of the planet's evolution are quite low. I suspect the sun will transition into a red giant and consume the Earth before the opportunity for such a collision presents itself again. But we won't be around to see it.

After a brief moment of panic, I decided to do a whole 5 minutes of online research to discover that this story is hogwash. First quote by David Stern, a scientist at nasa: "Some people worry that during magnetic reversals the Earth would receive a higher dosage of high-energy ions and electrons ("radiation" in common terms), which might affect us and any living creatures on Earth. This is not so. Even today, the magnetic shield is not effective near the magnetic poles, yet the radiation received there on the ground is only slightly higher than anywhere else. The reason is that our main shield against such particles is not the magnetic field of the Earth but the atmosphere, equivalent to some 10 feet of concrete." And the next quote which is a response to the question "Does the magnetosphere affect the weather": "I don't think so, we have no evidence for it. For at least two reasons, we do not expect any, either. First, our atmosphere is electrically neutral and does not conduct electricity (below 50 km, anyway--and weather stays below 10-20 km). Substances of this kind (except maybe permanent magnet, a very special case) do not react to magnetic fields. When a doctor puts your body inside the strong magnet of an MRI machine, you feel no difference, except maybe for the loud noise that machine makes. Second, weather gets its energy from heat deposited by sunlight on the surface of Earth. The energy of the magnetosphere, on the other hand, comes from the solar wind. What tipped me off to the possible misinformation is this article was not published in a peer reviewed scientific journal, but at a website that pays authors based on hom many hits they get. Practically all that energy, by the way, is channeled to the auroral zone, near the poles. As was said--no clear correlation has been observed, there or elsewhere. You may not get a scientist to say "absolutely no," but "very unlikely" may be just as good.

Does anyone believe that nothing is going to happen. History says that we have gone into ice ages and warm times repeatedly. What causes all this change? Don't you ever stop to think how this is possible. It is far bigger than humankind and all that we can do. Think for a minute that if you took all the people of the world and gave each person an area of about 18 square feet (6x3 feet) you could put all the people on the planet in the space of about 23000 square miles or little more than half of the state I live in. We can not generate enough heat or carbon dioxide to overpower what the earth naturally puts out. Now we know that gravity holds us in place but did you know that in Canada there is a place where the gravity is less than everywhere else? The magnetic field is responsible for everything staying on this planet and if the magnetic field is interrupted then everything is going to be affected, how much remains to be seen. We know that the magnetic field of Mars has dwindled and is believed to be the reason that Mars lost ability to sustain life. There is so much that we do not know it is scary. The planet is making some big changes with or without our consent. If you don't believe it then just sit back and watch.

I can find nothing that supports this story. For example, the Economist story makes no mention whatever of a link between space conditions and atmospheric weather or storms. I suppose that either the author made it up, or holds some gross confusion between space "weather" and the stuff that generates rain and snow on the ground.

Why read an article if you aren't at least for two seconds consider somebody else's point of view. I don't necessarily agree with this, much like I don't really agree with global warming. The fact is; Earth's climate is changing, and it's possible we are to blame, and it's possible there has been a magnetic shift. Who knows?

Thank global warming? The magnetic shifts are in part due to the poles tilting as the ice caps melt. They act like balancing weights. The magnetic field is created by our core spinning inside the outer shell spinning the opposite way. This is out of balance now, worsened by the continental plates rising as the weight of ice is removed magma is shifting and plates in the lower areas are sinking. Thus massive earthquakes. thank corporate greed too, the mining interests are drooling at gold and oil in arctic and want it to melt. They buy off politicians and suppress green technology. The author loses credibility in a number of places by overstating or outright fabricating situations and then presenting them as facts. One such action is stating that the recent cyclone in Australia should have been a category 6 - there is no category 6 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, it only goes to category 5 which has no upper wind speed limit. If the author is using another storm classification system, he should state this, otherwise it makes him look less than credible. The mistake global warming theorists make is extrapolating short term weather to long term climate change. The author makes these same mistakes.

To confirm, the floods in brisbane were gone in 3 days. The flooding to the west was flash flooding, quickly flowing downhill and out to sea, (through brisbane, coupled with a king tide, spelled problems). The flooding to the north rose and fell over a 2 week period, although they had experienced floods a month or two prior. Tropical cyclone Yasi was category 5 and caused tidal surges, with flooding in low coastal areas. It must be mentioned that Queensland historically has a monsoon in summer, locally called cyclone season, or the wet. For about 20 years we have experienced droughts, with strong El ninos and moderate La ninas. This season is made worse by a particularly strong La Nina event. The last really strong La Nina brought similar weather conditions to Australia in 1973/1974 with widespread floods and cyclones.

What I find striking is the number of negative criticisms from scientists, or students of science. This makes sense because a lot of the science being taught is baloney. Personally, I like the way the site is, but then I am a bit of a bog trotter who always thinks that older things work better. If it aint broke don't fix it. It would seem that the oldest myth in the world is that the world is about to end. I don't know if it is or not and I have been around such ideas since I was born 42 years ago. Despite all the near holocausts, we're still here. But I do think things are very fragile, and I do see, for whatever reasons, that climate is changing at a fast rate. But then, climate has always changed, it is the nature of it to do so. What makes things so fragile is that we are not equipped to deal with it. Our civilisation is young and has grown massively due to having an abundance of oil. And that has happened over a short time and has been built in a time of relative climatic stability. There seem endless arguments and views as to how much climate is changing and why; how much it is man made and how much it is natural cycles and indeed, the notion that I prefer myself, is that it is both. there are natural cycles and we are part of them so we contribute to the process at the time. What I see as inevitable is change, and what ever the cause, what is more important is what you do when it happens. One thing that is clear to me is that those who have always been closest to nature are those who suffer least when there is change. And most often because they know it is coming, as most animals, birds and insects tend to know. Having grown up close to the land and the sea and being close to nature most of my life, what I see is that science is very inadequate at describing nature. And despite all our cleverness, we seem to need satelittes and computers to tell us what the weather is going to do. Yet ants can burrow deeper when they know the weather is going to get colder. Migrating birds going long distance know when it is the ideal time to go; and they don't have iPods with accuweather. Having studied climate change all my life, I have come to the conclusion that no one actually knows what is happening although lots of people would purport to. I don't. But I do know that nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend. Resilience is the ability to embrace change and work well with it, whatever the cause. For my own part, I love growing food, being outdoors, weather it is sunny or stormy and feel comforted by seeing that the birds, trees, insects and life around me know something brilliant and create excellently and endlessly in ways that science just can't. As William Blake said, "we dance around in a ring and suppose, while the secret sits in the middle and knows"

Yasi did not have winds of 190MPH winds. It had 135 MPH winds. On the Saffir-Simpson scale it was a Category 4 storm, not a Category 5. (The Aussies have their own scale where they call a strong Cat 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, a cat 5.) This story ought to be corrected.

And Mr. Aym is a good writer, but sensation always does best. Many scientic organizations have written about the shifting of the magnetic north pole, though I read 40 km, not miles. This is true, and quite fascinating. What I don't find discussed on scientific websites is a link between this phenomenon and the world's weather ... yet, he may be right, of course. The world's weather does seem to be more chaotic lately, but why are we surprised? Earth = Change. Regarding this website, I am a website developer. Yeah, it is a bit outdated ... the link button thing is old, but who gives a flying flip. We should be visiting websites for information, not critiquing the site's look according to our own tastes. How shallow and mean - I pity some of these readers. At least the website ads are non-intrusive, thank you. No man is an island and no matter how much a genius, it requires other people to make things work. Well this pole shift idea is not so crazy. Tampa Bay airport is having to realign the markers on its runways to account fo the pole shift changing direction. Those who continue to deny the weather-link between cosmic magnetism and the earth's magnetic field (let alone the proven movement of the north pole) are practicing Ostrich Logic. In the early 1950's an interesting trio of books on this very phenomenon was published and similarly pooh-poohed: "Worlds in Collision" and "Earth in Upheaval" and "Ages in Chaos" by Immanuel Velikovsky. The way in which the so-called scholarly community responded to Dr. Velikovsky's research in the 1950's is reflected again today by the attitude of those who hoot at this article. It is February in Melbourne; it has rained most of today and I am typing this with a small heater going. This global WARMING is getting so bad!!! When I was young I thought that MOST ADULTS were smart, now I don't listen to many men. 99% are as dumb as a bag of hammers. I trust the Lord only nowadays. I was talking to a old guy on a flight yesterday and he was telling me how he needed a doona and an extra blanket in Baguio Philippines..I live in Manila for 6 months per year and February was the first time I felt a chill (EVER) You would have to be a zombie to not notice. Einstein even warned of a Pole Shift. How it affects climate I'm not sure, but we are in the middle of an extreme Pole Shift.
