Feb-04-2011 00:50TweetFollow @OregonNews Magnetic Polar Shifts Causing Massive Global SuperstormsTerrence Aym Salem-News.comSuperstorms can also cause certain societies, cultures or whole countries to collapse. Others may go to war with each other.
(CHICAGO) - NASA has been warning about it…scientific papers have been written about it…geologists have seen its traces in rock strata and ice core samples… Now "it" is here: an unstoppable magnetic pole shift that has sped up and is causing life-threatening havoc with the world's weather. Forget about global warming—man-made or natural—what drives planetary weather patterns is the climate and what drives the climate is the sun's magnetosphere and its electromagnetic interaction with a planet's own magnetic field. When the field shifts, when it fluctuates, when it goes into flux and begins to become unstable anything can happen. And what normally happens is that all hell breaks loose. Magnetic polar shifts have occurred many times in Earth's history. It's happening again now to every planet in the solar system including Earth. The magnetic field drives weather to a significant degree and when that field starts migrating superstorms start erupting. The superstorms have arrived The first evidence we have that the dangerous superstorm cycle has started is the devastating series of storms that pounded the UK during late 2010. On the heels of the lashing the British Isles sustained, monster storms began to lash North America. The latest superstorm — as of this writing — is a monster over the U.S. that stretched across 2,000 miles affecting more than 150 million people. Yet even as that storm wreaked havoc across the Western, Southern, Midwestern and Northeastern states, another superstorm broke out in the Pacific and closed in on Australia. The southern continent had already dealt with the disaster of historic superstorm flooding from rains that dropped as much as several feet in a matter of hours. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. After the deluge tiger sharks were spotted swimming between houses in what was once a quiet suburban neighborhood. Shocked authorities now numbly concede that much of the water may never dissipate and have wearily resigned themselves to the possibility that region will now contain a new inland sea. But then only a handful of weeks later another superstorm; the megamonster cyclone Yasi, struck northeastern Australia. The damage it left in its wake is being called by rescue workers a war zone. The incredible superstorm packed winds near 190mph. Although labeled as a category-5 cyclone, it was theoretically a category-6. The reason for that is storms with winds of 155mph are considered category-5, yet Yasi was almost 22 percent stronger than that. A cat's cradle Yet Yasi may only be a foretaste of future superstorms. Some climate researchers, monitoring the rapidly shifting magnetic field, are predicting superstorms in the future with winds as high as 300 to 400mph. Such storms would totally destroy anything they came into contact with on land. The possibility more storms like Yasi or worse will wreak havoc on our civilization and resources is found in the complicated electromagnetic relationship between the sun and Earth. The synergistic tug-of-war has been compared by some to an intricately constructed cat's cradle. And it's in a constant state of flux. The sun's dynamic, ever-changing electric magnetosphere interfaces with the Earth's own magnetic field affecting, to a degree, the Earth's rotation, precessional wobble, dynamics of the planet's core, its ocean currents and—above all else—the weather. Cracks in Earth's Magnetic Shield The Earth's northern magnetic pole was moving towards Russia at a rate of about five miles annually. That progression to the East had been happening for decades. Suddenly, in the past decade the rate sped up. Now the magnetic pole is shifting East at a rate of 40 miles annually, an increase of 800 percent. And it continues to accelerate. Recently, as the magnetic field fluctuates, NASA has discovered "cracks" in it. This is worrisome as it significantly affects the ionosphere, troposphere wind patterns, and atmospheric moisture. All three things have an effect on the weather. Worse, what shields the planet from cancer-causing radiation is the magnetic field. It acts as a shield deflecting harmful ultra-violet, X-rays and other life-threatening radiation from bathing the surface of the Earth. With the field weakening and cracks emerging, the death rate from cancer could skyrocket and mutations of DNA can become rampant. Another federal agency, NOAA, issued a report caused a flurry of panic when they predicted that mammoth superstorms in the future could wipe out most of California. The NOAA scientists said it's a plausible scenario and would be driven by an "atmospheric river" moving water at the same rate as 50 Mississippi rivers flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Magnetic field may dip, flip and disappear The Economist wrote a detailed article about the magnetic field and what's happening to it. In the article they noted: "There is, however, a growing body of evidence that the Earth's magnetic field is about to disappear, at least for a while. The geological record shows that it flips from time to time, with the south pole becoming the north, and vice versa. On average, such reversals take place every 500,000 years, but there is no discernible pattern. Flips have happened as close together as 50,000 years, though the last one was 780,000 years ago. But, as discussed at the Greenland Space Science Symposium, held in Kangerlussuaq this week, the signs are that another flip is coming soon." Discussing the magnetic polar shift and the impact on weather, the scholarly paper "Weather and the Earth's magnetic field" was published in the journal Nature. Scientists too are very concerned about the increasing danger of superstorms and the impact on humanity. Superstorms will not only damage agriculture across the planet leading to famines and mass starvation, they will also change coastlines, destroy cities and create tens of millions of homeless. Superstorms can also cause certain societies, cultures or whole countries to collapse. Others may go to war with each other. A Danish study published in the scientific journal Geology, found strong correlation between climate change, weather patterns and the magnetic field. "The earth's climate has been significantly affected by the planet's magnetic field, according to a Danish study published Monday that could challenge the notion that human emissions are responsible for global warming. "'Our results show a strong correlation between the strength of the earth's magnetic field and the amount of precipitation in the tropics,' one of the two Danish geophysicists behind the study, Mads Faurschou Knudsen of the geology department at Aarhus University in western Denmark, told the Videnskab journal. "He and his colleague Peter Riisager, of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), compared a reconstruction of the prehistoric magnetic field 5,000 years ago based on data drawn from stalagmites and stalactites found in China and Oman." In the scientific paper "Midday magnetopause shifts earthward of geosynchronous orbit during geomagnetic superstorms with Dst = -300 nT" the magnetic intensity of solar storms impacting Earth can intensify the effects of the polar shift and also speed up the frequency of the emerging superstorms. Pole reversal may also be initiating new Ice Age According to some geologists and scientists, we have left the last interglacial period behind us. Those periods are lengths of time—about 11,500 years—between major Ice Ages. One of the most stunning signs of the approaching Ice Age is what's happened to the world's precessional wobble. The Earth's wobble has stopped As explained in the geology and space science website earthchangesmedia.com, "The Chandler wobble was first discovered back in 1891 by Seth Carlo Chandler an American astronomer. The effect causes the Earth's poles to move in an irregular circle of 3 to 15 meters in diameter in an oscillation. The Earth's Wobble has a 7-year cycle which produces two extremes, a small spiraling wobble circle and a large spiraling wobble circle, about 3.5 years apart. Our world was born and it will perish; as does everything in our universe as witnessed by the history of geology. And there may or maynot be a history of our existence, as humans, during our brief stay in this expansive vacuum. Change is the one thing that we can see as we gaze into the evening sky; so it will be with us as well.

Are scientis and people in general just mindless cattle? The theories of the ice ages were not a gradguale change. It had to have happened drastically. Proof of this is the woolly mammoths found frozen with fresh buttercup grass that they were grazzing on. Ancient text pooves this and I don't know why if it is not from the christian jewedo Bible or Darin's theory made before proof and just a belife back by the British monarch means it is wroung. The royal family are not even Engolo saxon Blood. Plato, the Sumerians, Egytions, sanscript, Mayans, the native Americans are mythology. In that case the holy bible is a myth created by bit of truth from babylon, Egypt, cuneiform sumerian. Wake up humans, your senses are retarded. Low vibration causes magnetosphere. All things are in a constin state of vibration.

This is stretching my imagination ~ which is pretty stretchable ~ into views of unpleasantnesses I would prefer to leave alone. We all need to face realities and do what is good for Life. Are we all going to sit around and rot? I'd rather understand what's happening and DO things, thank you. We need to do whatever we can. Are the ones predicting all this also comforting us with things we might DO? Or are we to become another "fallen civilization" as so many before us? Perhaps some of their demises were the result of climactic changes? From what I've read that's been discovered about some of those civilizations past, they were extremely aware and intelligent peoples..far more so than our civilization! (way to go Bush and "nucular") Yet, some of them seemed to have been "left in the lurch" so to speak. Could that have been a climactic change that suddenly engulfed them? I'd rather learn to leave my body, thank you. Have peace of mind all of you and give out good energy...if we all do that, there'll be some kind of change for the good! But that's not what this article is about, now, is it. Sorry. And thank you for nudging me into deeper thoughts ~ I needed that. Also, I got a real hearty laugh out of some of the comments to this article! Love that humor. :>)

The so-called scientific revolution and the scientific method began 500 years ago with the work of Johann Kepler. Prior to Kepler, alchemy ruled; enchantments, angels, devils, demons, witchcraft. If you scratch the surface of today's modern world, that same enchanted world is very near to us today. Modern science has given us many wonderful inventions and solutions to problems. But modern science has not really CHANGED anything. The laws that govern the heavens and the earth are higher than any man can reach. Even Einstein knew that much. Anyone, and I mean anyone at ALL who is vain enough to believe that "science" rules is in for a surprise. Scientists like to tell themselves that the scientific method has ushered in a final anthropological evolution of mankind's perception of the world; that scientific thinking annihilates fear of the unknown. Vain scientists are hood-winking themselves. The Great Unknown will always be and will not ever vanish away into a perfect understanding of all things everywhere all the time. Does the passage of "time" flow at the same rate as it does 15 billion light-years from here? Until we get there and take a measurement, there is no way to be sure. Same as there is no way to be sure what will happen now as the north pole keeps moving west. Stay tuned. Hickory, dickory, dock...

Wake up, folks. Our dark future has seen the light despite obnoxious naysayers. It has already been proven that the magnetosphere, protector from solar wind radiation, has massive holes in it just like the ozone layer. As Gaia spins a thousand mph. through space with a molten core that has a shivering fever and massive earthquakes and monster storms to prove it, we face an uncertain ominous future wherein PC ignorant bliss can't spin the truth. With any reasonable deduction of logic, reason or common sense, how can one not come to the firm meteorological conclusion that drastic changes in atmospheric polarity or magnetism would directly affect weather systems and explain the millennial climate change chaos? Establishment science pedants tend to ignore the obvious since robot sheep who live in a perfect world refuse to believe they are vulnerable to natural fate. Status and position is supposed to save and protect academic snobs from reality. Like 1st class passengers on the Titanic, the sinking of our so called best and brightest would mean that if our end days loom they would be equal to the rest of us. And so they can't come to terms with that or the threat of climate change. The hallmark of mainstream scientific research is that it must adhere to political correctness at the expense of truth. And that means a state of status quo denial in the "expert" media. Dismissing the worst saves jobs and feel good disinfo for the short term. In the long term it'll only prove the insight of this article was spot on. In short, perhaps unreal people, well schooled street dumb elitists who may have never suffered in life don't want to admit the worst. To do so would bring them down to earth with the rest of us where our fragile planet is but a living thing with a finite life cycle whose fair weather well being rises and falls with the heat of the sun.

I also heard that there will be special people here to help calm people when it comes time to "go." He said, "whatever you believe in, thats what will happen to you after this life." All we can do is make the best decisions and be good people while were here.

I wonder how many of these comments are desinformation and how many are regular people. That being said, Yes it is real and we will have to see what happens. It could be a gradual shift at 40 kilometers a year or it could go hay wire. The ozone layer will protect us from most of the suns damaging rays. The question is in a worse case scanario how many deaths will it take for people to really recognize that some of these things are connected-like the Thousands of dead birds and fish in Arkansas (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110103/ts_yblog_thelookout/massive-bird-fish-kills-in-arkansas-leave-many-scratching-heads).

I have always been one to look at what is happening behind the scenes - so what do we KNOW for a fact here? 1. We KNOW that we were recently told that every zodiac sign was wrong and had been changed. 2. We KNOW that we were recently told that airports the world over are realigning their runways by 15 degrees to compensate for the earth's magnetic shift. 3. We KNOW that the H.A.A.R.P. program has been in use as far back as the Vietnam War and used to cause torrential rains in the Vietnam jungles to interrupt supply lines to North Vietnam. 4. We KNOW that Hurricane Jeanne did a loop-de-loop in the Atlantic Ocean in 2004, a physical impossibility without interference from man. 5. We KNOW that we live in a world where evil men seek ultimate power over all creatures on earth - from the air we breathe to the food we eat (S.510). I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going back to the source for more information so that I am not surprised or shocked as life on earth becomes stranger and stranger. I am going back to the Bible to read what is going to happen next. I am going back to the Bible to find out what was meant by "The Abomination of Desolation" spoken of in Daniel. I'm going back to the Bible to try to understand the passage in Matthew which states, "Men will fall dead from fear at the things which will walk upon the earth". I'm going back to the Bible and I will take consolation with the fact that all these things mean that Jesus will return soon and I will do exactly as He said, "Do not be troubled when these things come to pass... as they must come to pass before The Son of Man returns." And I will admit, I have been a Christian for over 30 years and in my mind I can not for the life of me figure out how Jesus plans to return to earth, where He is now, nor do I understand how He 'lives' where He lives. I am just grateful that He came, He died, and He rose from the dead and He will come again. Because even though my mind can't figure it out, my heart has. May God Bless and Keep You All.

The crazy weather isnt a surprize or shock to us who read the Bible because unlike Nostradomus it remains true at 100 percent. Yes to those who feel 2012 and the Mayan calander is coming true like the movie portrayed by Hollywierd well its coming true but as Bible Prophecy fulfillment. Luke 21:25 is a great verse describing extreme weather prior to the return of Christ as does the rest of that chapter, Matthew 24, and book of Revelation. Many of you will scoff at this yet it was written thousands of years ago and is coming to pass in our lifetimes. Check it out for yourselves then watch the TV. read the newspapers and watch God the creator of all things warn our world to repent by the warnings in the Sun,Moon, and stars and waves as stated in Luke 21:25 We who believe in these trying times have peace about the days we live in and are not surprized at the terror the weather may bring. God bless!

My Feb. 11 comment had 2 typographical errors. It should have read experiment in the early 1900's and the downward flow of energy in the primary arch creates the high pressure area and the clockwise winds via adding to the pull of gravity on molecules of air. the coriolis effect does not explain the incredible speed of the wind around a tornado or a hurricane. And, note that in these events there is an exceptional display of lightning. Also, the upper jet winds that blow eastward 300 mph faster than the ground speed of the Earth's rotation cannot be caused by the coriolis effect. This can only be created by the secondary swirling magnetic field current flowing around the core mass of the Earth.

I'm not an expert on magnetic pole shifts; however, I do know one thing about this writer. He has produced an impressive array of grossly inaccurate, highly sensationalistic, and politically motivated articles. In the past, many people -- scientists and science writers -- have questioned his sources -- including the people he had quoted (it should be noted that he took most, if not all, his information from secondary sources). Worst yet, his articles have a tendency to contradict each other. Does he believe global warming is hoax or not? I can tell from his collective work. All I know is that he that he supports the views of the Tea Party and some strange fringe groups (seriously, google his name). Sadly, I suspect Terrence likes the publicity rather than writing authentic and accurate articles. I guess what really matters to him is having his stories go viral. And as long as there's anyone gullible enough to print it, he'll get his way. Too bad it will be the readers who will lose. Oh, how we forget the lessons of Janet Cooke so quickly.

I am Australian and while Cylcone Yasi was predicted to leave an army of dead bodies in its wake and to be unlike anything we had seen before in Australia, the predictions Failed to materialize. Or didn't the news tell you that? Sure we had a cyclone twice the size the destructive one, but size did not amount to crushing intensity. I stayed up all night listening to local radio and have to say that even the radio station had to squash its disappointment there were not tales of incredible devastation to report the day after. In fact the flooding at Toowoomba weeks before was truly terrible and far more destructive with especially the toll of human life. The media has a vested interest in sensationalism. We forget that this trait is probably antihuman.

Great. A magnetic arch actually creates the high and low pressure areas on Earth. A laboratory experiment in the early 1000's proved that a strong current flowing through a wire produces a magnetic field swirling around it - always clockwise. If you imagine a magnetic field current arch between a high and low pressure area, the swirling magnetic field it produces would produce the clockwise swirl around the upward flowing primary current and the counterclockwise swirl around the low pressure area as viewed from above. This has normally been attributed to the coriolis effect. However, the Earth rotates and a consistent speed while the winds around the high and low pressure areas rotate at a speed consistent with the intensity of the high and low pressure areas.

My,my,my - all this and for what? Can you STOP a polar shift, if in "fact" it's going to happen? Can you "alter" in ANY way ANY kind of "super-Storm"? Can "ANYONE, ANYWHERE BY ANY MEANS" do "ANYTHING" to change "TO-ANY-DEGREE" that which you very inteligent people are suggesting is going to happen? Why not put your efforts into something "tangable" that will benifit the human race as it "is" and simply adjust to the idea that change is coming - change is ALWAYS coming - in every respect of our human condition. Does "death" firghten you so much that you think by spreading that fear yours will become LESS? This is, indeed, a sad comentary on the human condition. All this "knowledge" can be put in a thimble with plenty of room left over - UNLESS - "APPLICATION" IS PLACED AFTER IT, reason prevails and solutions are the product of adjustment necessities. so, rather than be governed by your fear, since fear is supposed to be the prime motivator, why don't some of you very briliant intelects get together and talk this over. Who knows - between you some good things may actually come to pass ! ! !

I’m not a nihilist, or a fatalist, I’m a realist. I don’t believe in prophecy or prophets such as Eager Casey, Nostradamus, 2012 predictions or the Book of Revelations. But I can see that humanity is in deep trouble and the tides of history will eventually crush us. Why? Political derision keeps the masses stupid with social controls through religion, institutions, capitalism, political dichotomies and other constructions via mass manipulation-all for economic plunder. Mean while overpopulation, pollution, ecological collapse, global warming, and a host of other problems escalate-unabated. Some scientists are now quietly saying that evidence mounts that the next mass extinction has begun. We can’t stop it. It’s a downfall that started 10,000 years ago but the end result is inevitable and now accelerating—no matter the optimistic dreamers or science— all species do fall. Let us not forget the collapse of the mega-fauna just 13,000 years ago. And let’s face it; scientists are subject to the same social-political forces that affect us all. Q: “Can I get some funding please?” A: “Yes, if your grant application tows our line and makes us money.” So, good luck finding all the hard, sad facts.
The one hope people had was a paradigm shift in the function of the human mind. An enlightenment whereby people, free thinking, relied on facts by mistrusting self propagating religious and political authorities but it’s not going to happen. People don’t want to think. The wave was begun a few hundred years ago but was quashed in the name of God, power and money and yes, even science. “ I need the job.” Individual reason lost the war to mass social manipulations.
Perhaps it is good that the masses live by blind obedience and faith rather than facts- why take personnel responsibility when one can turn from the face of doom? The sociopaths that run everything rather you didn’t know the profit limiting truths. I guess that’s ok. After all, we all want to be good citizens/congregants/ liberals/conservatives/ students/workers don’t we? Or, do we want to think for our selves
DJ: I think you're right on Rachel. This reminds me of what the novelist/philosopher Colin Wilson wrote in A Criminal History of Mankind "When we look back over the past eight thousand years, it is clear that the most irritating characteristic of human beings is their passivity. The mass of people accept whatever happens to them as cows accept the rain."
The inevitable result was described by the French philosopher Rousseau who could have predicted modern capitalism as "the human race divided into herds of cattle, each with a master who preserves it only in order to devour its members."

Last I checked it was 40 kilometers not miles. My resarch indicated that without the magnetic sheild we should be fine. Some of the sun rays will get in but not enough to really affect us. The weather is a sound concern and where the poles land is the other. I live in central CA so I'm worried about earthquakes being unleashed becuase excessive snowfall in the mountains.

You can take ten absolutely true facts and string them together to imply a conclusion that is absolutely false.A clever high school student once wrote an essay on the dangers of dihydrogen oxide and mentioned that this compound is made of atoms that are both explosive gases in pure form, that one of the atoms, oxygen, is a powerful oxidizing agent that causes DNA damage, etc., etc. and his final conclusion was that dihydrogen oxide ought to be banned. The paper got a great reaction because other students and even the adults in the room were too dull to notice that dihydrogen oxide is water, not a dangerous substance if used wisely. So, if you can make actually true facts mislead or lie imagine how much fun you can have yanking peoples chains when you combine actual facts, half truths, and out and out falsehoods? This seems to be the author’s area of competence. This article is pure rot but the sad thing is that most people do not have a strong enough background in science to tell the difference between science and rot. Some folks actually believe it. The editor seems to take a lot of pride in the fact that the article disturbed people and made them think. That is an absurd justification for publishing this nonsense! It is not hard to write something that disturbs peoples comfort zones, but any old crud that comes under that heading does not deserve to be published! The editor does into consider the damage from publishing scientific nonsense, he is having his little War of the Worlds moment without considering that some unfortunates are actually going to believe this nonsense and spread it around and only further confuse people about climate issues, when they are already confused enough. The publication of patently absurd doomsday articles is not justified in my opinion. The need to make a buck somehow, in any old way lies behind it somewhere.

From a geologist: Magnetic flips occur, on the short side, hundreds of thousands of years. Ice age and warming cycles occur in thousands to tens of thosands of years. There have been several ice ages with no polar flips in the last 100k years. Besides, you'll be hard pressed to locate weather evidence from the last polar flip to support this relationship. Any binding of the two is simply hearsay, pasting together non-common factoids taken out of context. Careful, you'll have people making movies about California falling into the Pacific before long.

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance – that principle is contempt prior to investigation. ~ Herbert Spencer __________________________________________
Whichever side you're on, you can't deny that our climate is changing. SOMETHING is causing it, and global warming was discredited when the memos and emails of the scientists involved revealed that their studies were less than honest. Science is supposed to incorporate facts and only facts, but to think that personalities and opinions aren't involved is blissfully ignorant. As the late Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, Ph.D. noted: "Normal science doesn't make room for observations that don't fit its own basic assumptions. Normal science is about solving problems that arise inside those assumptions. It is the problems that refuse to fit that lead to scientific revolution." ___________________________________________
This will be argued and debated until the truth is finally revealed in retrospect, provided any of us are still living to contemplate it. One thing no one has mentioned here is the Large Hadron Collider. When was the last time you heard anything about that? Could it have any effect on the geology of the earth? I don't personally know that much about it.
DJ: Three points: First, the business with the emails was irresponsibly blown all out of proportion by ill-educated journalists looking for sensational headlines to attach to their bylines. A later investigation found nothing amiss, no ethics violations or dishonesty. That part wasn't covered very well which is why you still remember the allegations and give them credence.
Second: The LHC is still undergoing testing and repairs and has nothing to do with the geology of the earth. A good place for an overview is at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider Check out, as well, http://www.lhc.ac.uk/
Third: There is no such thing as scientific truth, there is only agreed upon truth of the moment. Look up phlogiston on this point; most people don't remember it, but before the discovery of oxygen, phlogiston was the state of the art scientific explanation..

There are some factual errors in this story. The magnetic north pole is moving northwestward (not east); it is moving at 40km per year (not 40 miles).

This is amazing. Quite possibly the most poorly constructed set of hysterical rantings that have graced my monitor today. Who cares how many people read it? No matter how thin you slice it, it's still baloney. Also, a protip: magnetic pole reversal has zero to do with the geologic pole (no ice caps melting, people falling off chairs, etc). Now you know! Protip 2: it has also jack all to do with weather. Now back to your regular programming. IT'S POPULAR AND THEREFORE EXTREMELY TRUTHY.

Where are the greats and the strongs? Dinosaurs, mammoths, etc.? Why elephants, lions, whales, wolfs… are going nowhere? Dinosaurs are not here anymore but the small lizard, yes. And the reptile that was selected for transcendence, for to be a mammal, was the little cyanodont. Where are the Roman Imperators, Attila, The Pharaohs? But the simple people of Egypt are still there and now with a foot in the parliament. If your human values are based in this wrong interpretation of Nature I can understand why the Nazis lost the war.
Coly Wilson February 9, 2011 4:22 pm (Pacific time)
Mayan prophecy tells us of a "new element" which will be discovered in the time we are presently in. In my interview with Mayan elder Carlos Barrios of the Ajq'ij (Eagle Clan); he says the new element is symbolized as "Ether". A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that during this time Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Our Earth receives energies, both physical and subtle from the Sun as well as other stars. To receive the maximum amount of energies, it has to come in a proper alignment with these celestial bodies. For example, during an eclipse, where the Earth, Sun and Moon align with each other, very rare spiritual energies flood our Earth because of this alignment. Hence the duration of eclipses were considered sacred and were spent in meditations and other spiritual activities, to make the best use of these subtle energies. An alignment occurring at the level of the Galactic centre will have an effect which is many, many times higher in magnitude. When our Earth, along with the solar system aligns with the Galactic equator, it will come in direct focus of a huge amount of subtle energies, which emerge from the Galactic Centre. And the triangular formation of Alcyone, Sirius and the Galactic centre in 2012 brings a massive amount of spiritual energies from these Stars to our Earth. There is another "apex" occurring during 2012. It is the time of "solar maximum" for Cycle 24. This will be the period when the Sun is most likely to jettison its most powerful forms of 'charged particles' in the way of solar flares and coronal mass ejections. In addition ... the Mayans tell us that in this particular time-in-space, co-existing "celestial events" will take place from our galaxy Milky Way. The suggestion is that two events (acting as one) will occur during the same apex window. As a result of aligning with a stream of cosmic rays from our Milky Way, and with the Sun reaching its maximum strength for this cycle, an enormous amount of charged particles will hit our solar system, Earth, and each of us. The outcome is unknown - but if Mayan prophecy maintains its accuracy, a significant shift will occur with both the Earth itself, and a shift in all living things. UCLA professor Alexander Kusenko, professor of physics and astronomy says: "When the data came out, they were so unexpected that many people started questioning the applicability of known laws of physics at high energy. The common lore has been that all ultra-high-energy cosmic rays must come from outside the galaxy." Recent scientific discoveries are highlighting this very fact. Something is shifting in our galaxy, and it is happening in the form of "charged particles". As mentioned in my previous five-part article, two of our most advanced spacecraft, WISE and PLANCK, are delivering stunning discoveries regarding black holes, dark matter, and a full spectrum of charged particles. This spectrum identifies the smallest known particles in known as cosmic rays, larger particles known as gamma rays, and the largest particles known as solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CME's) and coronal holes

We are over-due for a polar shift. The first few lines of the story are fact, as for the superstorms, I don't know, sounds like it would make sense, but as far as I knew, a polar shift would only affect us if it happened at the exact moment a major solar flare came at us, other than that, only mild power outages from the minor (compared to a massive solar flare) radiation hitting us on a daily basis that out magnetosphere protects us from. At least that was my knowledge until this article. I'll have to do some more research before I buy into the superstorm theory

Sarah February 8, 2011 10:22 am You said: “You cite evidence without statistical background or dissenting information. The papers you provide are no better. Why you confound legitimate science with speculative nonsense is beyond all reasoning.” My question: “Which “legitimate science” have about astronomic bodies’ systemic interactions? How works the Solar System and the Milk Way System? Which are the systemic excess of information after getting the sum of informations of all its parts? Where are the properties of these astronomic systems that became the foundations for the emergency and constitution of biological systems? Where are the evolutionary links between Cosmological Evolution and Biological Evolution? We have no legitimate science about astronomic systems, only a few proved facts and incipient theoretical models. Have Science watched the origins and development of any astronomic body, which takes million, billion years? Sensible forces like astronomic magnetism and its interactions, and the real effects of stars’ radiations… everything is unknown, yet. So, in this issue, there are no expertises. Editor: "You are not accustomed to visiting a site that isn't some mindless computer driven entity." You are right. They have merely a electro-mechanic brain which has tentacles with mechanic/optical sensors getting informations from astronomic systems. Them, it is the electro-mechanic brain that makes its simulations and build theoretical models. Final result? The history of the Universe is the same history of origins and development of the machine, which is the origins of the electro-mechanic brain. The computer is self-projecting itself into the Universe for explaining it and our poor human biological brain believes in it. Who is the most famous theoretical astrophysics today? Stephen Hawking… just the most sample of human/computer junction and computing domination of humans. I will wait real human astronauts with humans biological brains and biological natural sensors observing and making theoretical models of Universe for believing in it.

The raving about Revelations and Genesis has nothing to do with this article. And keeping an open mind isn't an invitation to be gullible toward misrepresented information. The poles have moved before, the sun has flared before, and the weather on average is unremarkable. On Helium, stories aren't fact checked or peer-reviewed, and the resounding opinion of scientists on this article is a thumbs-down. Terrence has admitted his primary reason for writing is to entertain, which he certainly has done quite well.
Editor: No, Terence did not reference this story as 'entertainment' and neither did we. Terrence is a writer of much variety. I sense the extreme lack of comfort that this article brings but neither you or whatever blogs plop stories up against it change the possibilities. We've been accused of appearing like FOX News which is about as far from reality that one can go; but the notion of 'we report you decide' really applies. We are a band of journalists almost 80 in number and we are not controlled by the same advertiser-based agendas that most are.
MB the Science Guy February 9, 2011 10:39 am (Pacific time)
Before commenting, I actually read all the cited articles (except for the Nature article - sorry I'm not paying that kind of money just to read one paper). I fail to find a correlation between the magnetic "super-storms" and the weather storms... except for the word "storm". Had the author bothered to read past the abstracts cited, or stepped out of his windowless bomb shelter to actually interview any of the scientists cited as his sources, he would have heard that his hypothesis was in error. In this case, 2+2 does NOT equal 666. Mr. Editor you stated "understand that a journalist does not have the ability to test a scientific method". This is true, but A JOURNALIST has a DUTY to ensure that the facts are truthful and correlate to the story and suppositions made within. Had anyone from S-N (with a Journalism degree or anyone with more than a sports deck assignment for a High School newspaper) bothered to fact-check this article, they should have rejected it for publication. But then journalistic integrity isn't exactly what S-N is known for. That is sad. Mr. Editor, your thin-skinned comments have shown that you value how your "newspaper" is perceived. Right now, from the comments received, you are largely viewed as a laughing stock. And because of that, you are getting a large number of page-views from people coming for their daily laugh at the absurd. I know what I just said must have grated on you. I urge you to take a giant step forward in journalistic integrity. This article wasn't a HOT items. It could have sit for a day or two while you (or someone vaguely knowledgeable in the science) verified the article. Also, knee-jerk responses to reader comments do little to raise your perception. By posting only strong journalistic articles and limiting your comments to ONLY the editorial page, you might one day be taken seriously. If not, I hope you develop a thicker skin.

The basis is that the magnetic field created by the poles creates sheilding from ionic radiation from the sun. That radiation will affect evaporation rates thus changing weather. This article is a bit alarmist and contains some junk science. That having been written, we are in fact about due for a pole shift and the end of the interglacial. Very few jurisdictions have contingency plans to cope with the inevitable end of the Holocene Optimum, while interestingly, many have ones to cope with "Global Warming" and "sea level increase." Now tell me, which would be more deadly and costly, AGW / sea level increase, or, the end of the Holocene Optimum? If you need to think about this for more the two seconds, you need to learn about the Geological and Fossil Records. As some Greens I know would say, nature bats last.

After reading this article, and reading many of the comments I cannot resist sharing this thought. I've read alot of bashing towards the author, the legitmacy, and the fact content of the article. I can only imagine that many who are skeptical could consider themselves qualified to share such ridiculous arguments to contradict the author, but the truth remains that many people are talking out of their rears. I'm talking about those who are dismissing this article all together because they have the delusion that their ignorance is a qualification to dispute this article or the facts included. I believe, in any case, it is important to share ideas and debate with a healthy respect for the other. (In this case, the author) Obviously, whether you agree or disagree, above all else, there should be some respect, of which many of the opinions and arguments I've been reading are sorely lacking. I applaud the editor for maintaining a level of tact when responding. It speaks volumes about ones character and professionalism. Something, I've noticed in many comments, is seriously lacking. So, I applaud you. And I also have to say, before you go and dispute something, it's always best to have knowledge of facts, and possibly a study in a field that applies to the subject you are debating. One cannot argue intelligently with a closed mind.

What is ever more bothersome about all the "up in arms" responses from people of all walks of life, is the underlying concept that the human race is more powerful than nature and physical forces. These people can refuse these ideas all they want, but they still have to face the fact that we have more immediate threats to human civilization. The 21st century is not going to play out like all the other centuries in the earths past. Never before in the history of the world has there been 7 billion people living. Never before have we had the type of technology, and now acceleration of technology. Our entire economy has been connected globally now. Food and Water sources are getting more and more scarce. There are things like the yellowstone super volcano that are lurking in the shadows. We still don't know if an sizable asteroid will in fact impact the earth again. Our entire world and way of life has become so fragile and interconnected that I liken it to a high stakes game of Jenga. The wooden bricks represent everything from bees pollinating crops, to the energy crisis, to the absence of non-nuclear warfare. If we keep allowing these things to slip away from us and our control, then the sooner the whole thing will come crashing down like a Jenga tower. Everything is so fragile and interconnected. It only takes ONE thing to spark a wildfire within our global civilization, a fire that could spread across the world in a matter of minutes. The energy crisis is looking at us right smack in the face and we refuse to acknowledge it. Same thing with the global economy. If the US has another economic disaster, which it will because that is how our economic system was designed, then we cannot just keep printing more paper money that has to true value. People who think these are all independent issues are wrong. These are issues that are all connected, and we are connected to them. We may have created a fantastic, and advanced society and civilization, but we also made it so fragile that I liken it to a microchip being ruined by a grain of sand. All these people commenting on how these things are not possible, or the people scoffing at this article, are partly to blame for any future collapse of our global civilization. Their complacency has allowed the governments to so virtually anything they want. These people, who can only imagine grave problems when the problems actually arrive at their doorstep, are going to wonder what happened while the rest of us are running around saying "I told you so."

All these comments remind me of the same type of people who proclaim the earth to be 5000 years old. They scoff at any suggestion from scientific data, and accuse the writer of being a part of some conspiracy to fear monger. The fact of the matter is that we humans have only been living in civilization for 10,000 years. When the earth is proved to be over 4 billion years old, it is hard for me to believe a future scenario where we DON'T face the forces of nature. The topic of the earths magnetosphere and it's connection to life on earth is nothing new to science. But it does not surprise me that people refuse to even see it as a possibility. Everyone commenting about how they themselves have researched this and that fail to give any evidence that would rebuff the claim that our magnetic poles are a significant part the way the earth functions and that it may be affecting the weather and climate. More leaps are made by the people commenting than the writer, by far.

Ignorance is Bliss February 9, 2011 7:04 am (Pacific time)
We mock what we don't understand. It's so easy to call this nonsense. Just because you have a diploma doesn't make you an expert. There is no doubt there's some serious climate changes going on. The cause of them isn't really material. The really scary stuff may not happen next year, but over the Earth's history some pretty nasty climate shifts have happened. They will continue to happen. Put your head in sand and call this fearmongering if you want. It's at least thought provoking, which if any of you had the ability to handle without your cozy belief system getting threatended would be a good thing. Good job rebutting these knuckleheads editor.
Eben February 9, 2011 6:54 am (Pacific time)
Dear Editor, Thank you for trying to get folks thinking, unfortunately they seem to just be talking. One lesson most folks do not seem to learn (especially today's academic scientists)is to be open to ideas other than their own pre-existing notions. Debate ideas and theories, not just dismiss them. Keep up the good work of inspiring debate. One of my favorite Einstein quotes: "Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."

I read the author's credentials. HAS lived in 50 states. Is he a truck driver.. According to this article it should be raining on mars too and on the moon if all it takes is magnetic fields to produce rain.

I don't see the harm in publishing a story like this. Though I believe there is still so much that we as human beings cannot comprehend in this life, it is our nature to use our God-given sense of logic to try and make sense of the world around us. All in all, this is an interesting article. Weather true or not, time will tell. In the meantime, it did give us food for thought. Thanks, Salem-News!
This is a terrible website February 9, 2011 5:56 am (Pacific time)
How it got to the top of google news I can't imagine. Some serious geocities.com/WestBarnLand/endofworld.html going on here.

What a load of pseudo-science. I've never seen it packed so tightly. I'm only surprised that the author has divulged that when the poles reverse, the absence of magnetism will reduce gravity and cause all humanity to float into space.
Steve B February 9, 2011 5:47 am (Pacific time)
>>...there is a crime in providing food for thought.
Editor: OK, I suppose in reality that is true in many ways in this age of US 'homeland security' Thankfully not this one though!

Steve G. February 9, 2011 5:22 am (Pacific time)
This is just a cover up. Reality is that the Earth's core has stopped spinning and therefore playing havoc with the magnetic field that surrounds the Earth. There is a possibility that we can start the core spinning again but we'll have to bore a tunnel to the core and set off atomic bombs to kickstart the core into spinning.

The best part is a part of one of the comments here: "... Your article is quite helpful for those who are just waking up and wondering what's going on. ..." LMFAO! Can you imagine - you're just waking up, still groggy, wondering what the heck's going on... and then you read this c r a p! You'd be like... Whaaaa??? Seriously, though, what garbage. (And for those here preaching open-mindedness... 2+2 ain't 5, unless you opened your mind with some home-grown skunk. And even then... Well, sadly, people ignorant of science or engineering or basic logic and common sense are just doomed to fall prey to this kind of bs.)

There is one important fact that everyone seems to be denying. It is scientific fact that the earth's magnetic pole has increased in speed dramatically. This can only mean one thing. Scientific fact that the Earth's poles reverse every 300 to 500 thousand years on average. It is a fact that they have not reversed in 730 some odd thousand years. This also can only mean one thing. I don't like the idea any more than you but the poles are shifting right now! Why are all the governments and elites building and storing food underground? Realize and prepare and you may survive. Deny and pig out on your desires until your time is at hand. I will still offer you shelter.

Bull sharks, you hack, not tiger sharks, some basic fact finding would tell you bull sharks are not uncommon in the rivers of this area. The author's been reading the prophecy and predictions section of his big source "earthchangesmedia.com". I believe I'll go watch 2012..summarize it and one-up you. This speaks volumes (mocking) for the Salem-News. Really-really.

SouthFla100 February 8, 2011 8:20 pm (Pacific time)
This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to comment on a news article. The author misleads many facts that need to be clarified. One in particular... The Author states: "The incredible superstorm packed winds near 190mph. Although labeled as a category-5 cyclone, it was theoretically a category-6. The reason for that is storms with winds of 155mph are considered category-5, yet Yasi was almost 22 percent stronger than that." My comment on this: There is a HUGE difference between "wind gusts" and "Sustained winds" when talking about a hurricane. Although I am not downplaying the destructive force of a Category 4 hurricane/cyclone this storm was in no way a Category 6, it was not even a Category 5 on the Saphir-Simpson Scale. The sustained winds of this storm were 144 MPH, not 190 MPH. There may have been wind gusts up to 190 MPH but that is typical for a lage hurricane. Is this a tabloid newspaper? Where does the author get his facts? There is something called Google. Try doing a search on Hurricanes next time you write an article about them.

There is no such thing as global warning. There approximately 20 or more countries with HAARP. We are witnessing a secret war that these countries are fighting. Does this mean pole dancers who spin clockwise will spin counter clockwise and vice-versa when this happens? And, will the water in my sink/toilet go down the other way? Quick: I have to build a bomb shelter to avoid the 400 MPH winds! Wait, my parents did that in the 60s for impending nuclear war; I don't need to do it! Nice.

jprjr3 February 8, 2011 6:34 pm (Pacific time)
Interesting article, but WHY is every planet experiencing changes? If you pay attention to this kind of stuff, you know that it is (some what)well reported. The real reason solar system changes is probably that we have a visitor. So why can't that be acknowledged? Why the big secret? It is already visible, not yet easily, but soon. Then what will the naysayers do? Admit they were stuck-up and wrong? Not likely.
Anonymous February 8, 2011 7:59 pm (Pacific time)
NIce try but no cigar. North magnetic pole has been shifting since long before atmospheric carbon dioxide spiked. The links between industrialization and climate change are clearly causal and stepwise; Polar shifting is not.

J February 8, 2011 6:49 pm (Pacific time)
To the editor, staff:
I almost feel ashamed for you. Almost every line of this article is factually incorrect. Did you seriously consider your sources? What about the scientific method?
By the way, I'm a well respected geophysicist and I publish in and review papers for several of the top peer-reviewed journals on this topic.
Editor: Come on, ashamed? I'm really sorry that this article makes people so emotional. It isn't always a clear or traditional trail J; can you give it that much? I expect some scientists will have a hard time letting go of pre-determined theories, however there is plenty of supporting data. But, if a person refuses to search it out in legitimacy they will remain perpetually in the dark by choice. My suggestion is to understand that a journalist does not have the ability to test a scientific method. I spoke to Terrence at length about all of this and I think he has done a fantastic job with this article and don't tell me it isn't making people think, or that there is a crime in providing food for thought.

Change is afoot, whether driven by the sun or by humans. The Arctic weather system this year split in half, creating two big ridges, one over Alaska, the other on the Northern tip of Labrador and Quebec. Usually there is just one big weak high over the pole, fenced off by the Jet Stream. This year there were two, with a hole in the middle. This hole allowed cold Arctic air to reach Texas and Florida. It ran into a wall of extra-wet and climate empowered air coming from the Gulf of Mexico. That swirling torrent dropped, in repeated extreme precipitation events, record snow all over the East Coast. I've tunneled into the books and talked to scientists. This is new phenomena.
Luck is Unlikely February 8, 2011 6:40 pm (Pacific time)
No matter whether this man is right or wrong, I don't care. This type of sensationalism creates a culture of fear leaving people feeling helpless. Editor, what does this mean, "1) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) BZ < −27 nT lasts for at least ∼1 h; (2) solar wind dynamic pressure, Pd > ∼ 12 nPa; (3) the projected interplanetary electric field, EK − L > ∼30 mV/m. " Can't tell? I can't either. This man is not a world renowned reporter. He may be read tons, but only because nobody has a clue as to what he is talking about. Sorry to be harsh, but I take the truth very seriously. If you don't want to feel the burn, then don't right controversial shit. P.S. The Danish report reports more rain in the tropics. There is not a single reference to superstorms in the Danish Article. Talk about Strawmanning your argument to make it seem like you've uncovered the next big fear. P.S.S. Water temperature is directly correlated to hurricane intensity. I'd be more concerened about the temperature of the water than how many ionized particles are grouping up into rain clouds (in the tropics)

It's amazing that with today's 24 hour news cycle it was a small newspaper in Oregon that got the scoop on the "End of the World" story. You guys must be a shoe in for the Pulitzer this year. But in all seriousness, the Editor of this publication needs to be fired ASAP. But then again, there are probably more people on this site than eve before, so maybe he needs a raise. Who ever said journalism was dead?
Dr. Chenler February 8, 2011 6:08 pm (Pacific time)
Right. Been working on the magnetic pole shift idea, and it is indeed happening. It is entirely possible that the magnetic pole may mostly seem to disappear (Though, not completely.). And it is possible that the human race will be exterminated if we don't do something fast!!! And by "Fast", I mean within the next 25,000 years. Being an Astronomer (Which requires extensive knowledge about Geology), I realize that these things can happen. And, for the most part, what the writer of the article said was actually true. What the writer of the article failed to mention is the time-frame this stuff happens in. First, there is the super-storms. They happen on average in various bursts every fourteen years or so. Five hundred years later, the pole shift begins to accelerate. Within the next two thousand years, the magnetic pole is briefly negligible! We've got some time to get off this hazardous rock. Also, to 2012-ers: LOL.
Cdub February 8, 2011 6:05 pm (Pacific time)
A pole shift will have little to no effect on weather patterns. Don't take my word for it - read the numerous articles on the subject in reputable science magazines. This is garbage.
Richard LionHeart February 8, 2011 5:05 pm (Pacific time)
Gee...wish you naysayers had revealed your knockdown of the magnetic-north shift sooner! The Florida airports have had to re-number the runways to coincide with shifyted compass readings! You could have saved them all that trouble and just let planes land on the wrong strips!
scaredshtless February 8, 2011 5:03 pm (Pacific time)
What a relief! And to think I was feeling guilty because global warming caused by my use of energy was going to kill us all. I'm so relieved to know its not my fault. The author and Al Gore are both dumbasses!
Gordon Morehouse February 8, 2011 4:28 pm (Pacific time)
The comments are almost as hilarious as the epic science fail in the article. Thanks for the lulz this afternoon! :D
Craig West February 8, 2011 4:08 pm (Pacific time)
I went to college at MIT and had a summer job at the Space Plasma Group at the Center for Space Research there. The author of this article should be ashamed of himself. Solar wind doesn't affect weather. The world is not coming to an end. The sad thing is he calls himself a journalist but he's not interested in the truth.
I also was raised by a religion that was waiting for the end of the world. Guess what? It's ain't happening. Sorry Terrance.
Editor: I have had a lot more contact on this story than you have and there are many people of significance who agree that everything suggested here is logical and possible. Sorry if it bothers you; but check this out. Terrence is one of the world's most read journalists. So open your mind, it is the best advice anyone can give you.

Newsflash: Throwing flour, olive oil, salt, tomatoes and spices in a blender does not result in spaghetti though it may have the same contents. You do not understand the science you've used for your badly written disaster story. Please step away from the very shrill panic button. Everyone else: If this actually worries you, read up on the individual studies that this ham-handed hack has strung together. You can't possibly do a worse job interpreting the data than he has.
davidE February 8, 2011 2:54 pm (Pacific time)
The movie poster for "2012" did say "We Were Warned!" Seriously everyone, the internet is full of stories which have no, little, or some basis in fact. Suggest less fear-mongering and more attention to science. I agree with those posting about the reduced attention to actual threats. The earth does appear (from most studies) to be approaching a tipping point in terms of climate, natural resources that will require rapid shifts in the way we view living on this precious, single world of ours.

The article itself is hilariously wrong on all counts, but the best part is the thin-skinned reaction of the writer to negative comments.
Editor: The comments are from myself, not the writer. I'm sure he's busy working on his next article. I do not have thin skin, nor do I have tolerance for stupid crap. So, as long a people are reaching into the stupid crap pile and flinging dung, they are fine.

I totally agree!! Its as simple principals that function with our own body. If we get out of routine it causes us to get sick or catch a cold, it is happening the same way as our planets. This is why these storms are happening at catastrophic levels, even earthquakes that are happening in the middle of the pacific where there’s no fault line. It could be possible that the findings of the Indus Valley, India, could be the same cause of what’s talked about here of what may happen with our magnetic fields. The funny thing is, every 11 years the Sun Solaris is at its peak. With no coincidence that very peak is in the same time frame as the astronomical alignment and the hype of 2012?? ..What im saying is, if these GOES satellites are correct and that our magnetic field is weakening then we could be in trouble with the peak of the sun releasing trillions of radiation thru blankets and wind. Our magnetic fields won’t save us. Let’s prey GOD will. To you people that are NOT open minded, forget our materialized world and see what was embedded in these wonders of the world. If someone’s trying to warn you I don’t think I will just walk on by….. Actually consider what may happen to you and your loved ones. When there’s a beginning, there’s an end……….

I stumbled across this article when I noticed it linked to my Google News page. Thankfully, it is 90% garbage. I have actually done research in magnetospheric physics for over a decade, so I know a little bit about this topic. The earth's magnetic field is important for a number of reasons, but shifts in its orientation are NOT strongly coupled to weather patterns at the surface. The author of this story has made up most of the claims out of thin air by misunderstanding several journal articles. For example, "superstorms" in magnetospheric physics have nothing to do with atmospheric storms. Anyone working in this field of research knows that. Please disregard this article. About stuff like this is the astounding silliness, not just disagreements with intellectual discussions, just the silly rubbish being posted against the idea of anything being beyond what you are told and shown by the Powers that Be. Again, I don't mean disagreement, I mean the nonsensical, outlandish posts that will seem even more dire when the stuff does hit the fan and humankinds true intelligence and "open mindedness" and ability to be a "supreme being above all creatures" is shown for what it is. Ignorance.

Pole shifts and reversals have -- as the article admits -- happened frequently in our planet's past. And they don't correlate to any mass extinction events that would be expected to accompany the sort of catastrophic changes Aym fantasizes.
The superstorm says the NOAA "predicts" is simply a plausible, hypothetical storm. NOAA thinks these occur on cycles of 100 years or so. The last one hit California in 1861. I'm sure you remember from your history classes, how that storm wiped out life in California.
Salem-News.com should be sued for publishing such alarmist tripe.
Editor: Oh yeah, send the thought police right over, code three. Sorry, but that was a lame suggestion if there ever was. I don't know where you live pal but this is a US site; we aren't over in the east bloc somewhere, sorry. And all of you weather experts better look around because some of the most serious minds concur with Terrence. Your refusal to accept the fact that anything might be different from your mainstream accepted views causes you to be very self-limiting.

This article seems almost intended to "take the heat off" man-made global warming. I can't find any solid correlation between weather and magnetic pole shifts, except on right-wing conspiracy sites like Alex Jones, etc. This is ripe for an excuse to dismiss climate change as the cause of bad weather, and I'm sure it will become another tool in the deniers' kit-bag. Sunlight affects weather far more than magnetism, and this whole article is probably bogus.

It way past time for a cleansing of the ingrates and the willful know-nothing monkey-men, courtesy of Mother Nature herself. Nature doesn't discriminate unfairly---she kicks any tail she gets her hands on, and only respects the Great, the Wise, and the Strong. Nature is Nazi, baby, and there won't be hardly any "survivors" left to professionally whine and make a living off of their unquestionable victimhood-care faux-egalitarian racket. Man had his purpose, and most willfully fumbled the ball. NEXT! Evolve, die, or be slaves, pets and livestock for the Supermen.

The hilarious "Editor" comments are the funniest part of all of this! With such an awesome site it's shocking that we don't see the editors from the NYT or Washington Post joining intelligent debates like this guy.
Editor: Glad to make your day Chuckles. Yes, for six years we have had live comment approval and sometimes I can't resist; sometimes we talk back. The NYT and WP are robots man, can you appreciate the difference? Comments are for debate, commentary, reactions, but they are not to be used to level personal attacks. Glad that you are being exposed to a new concept, it is called 'two-way communication' and frankly I would have imagined you could have figured that one out but hey, I don't mind spoon feedin' ya every now and then. No, the MSM does not have much of a human presence, we do and we always will. What else? No invasive advertising, did you notice how a commercial didn't come leaping out at you when you opened the site? I know it isn't as fun to recognize a Web news group's personal commitment to viewers or the way we protect people from a bunch of commercial garbage, but I thought I'd let you in on that.

Oh, wow... First, the article is poorly presented. You cite evidence without statistical background or dissenting information. The papers you provide are no better. Why you confound legitimate science with speculative nonsense is beyond all reasoning.
Sadly, I read the whole thing. Like a bad soap opera, I was sucked in. Upon completion, after being baffled that such a "report" could find its way into a news outlet featured in my circulars, I read the editor's comments here and literally laughed out loud.

Hal Seeley February 8, 2011 10:03 am (Pacific time)
Within our limited knowledge of the Universe and the apparent physical laws that have been observed we can say that there is a force at work that attempts to balance the relationship between all things. The measurement of entropy is a good example. But entropy is a measure within a so called isolated system. If we consider the earth and its atmosphere the isolated system, then the entropy of earth becomes more stable as time goes on – unless there is an outside influence that affects the temperature, pressure, volume, or density of the isolated system. If human activity affects any of the four elements of entropy then we can expect to see a reaction in some form or other as the system attempts to reestablish equilibrium. If we think in terms of our atmosphere being in chemical balance then any increase or decrease of the chemical elements will cause a natural force towards equilibrium. These natural forces may be mild or violent depending on the imbalance. Examples of this can be readily seen in simple chemistry classroom experiments. If we consider the increase of chemical elements into our atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels as an imbalance then we have to give credence to the hypothesis that a force of change will occur. Add to this the possible changes outside the isolated system, such as the sun, can affect the entropy of the earth, then we will certainly see the forces of equilibrium at work. The difference between a good mechanic and a poor mechanic can often be measured in the differences in their troubleshooting abilities. The same goes for scientists. The major difference between the two disciplines is the amount of information available to discern the cause of the problem. Needless to say a mechanic has far less elements of information to work with, but even if the mechanic does not have all the information or does not use all the information available, he will most likely not find the cause of the problem and he will most likely continue to repair the symptoms. Scientists do not have all the elements of information. There are just too many deep mysteries in our Universe and too many variables to prove anything with absolute certainty. Thus we are left with scientific guesses that are often proved through trial and error until the perceived absolute certainty arrives. I say perceived certainty because what we perceive to be true may not be true at all. No matter how objective we think we are, we are not. We are subjective beings to the core and this is why one of us will vote for and admire Obama or Bush, and the other will not vote for and abhor Obama or Bush. Take the argument about global warming. Why it is one element of our society believes wholeheartedly in the theory and the other segment thinks it is hogwash is itself a mystery. There are certainly loads of information supporting the theory of global warming and loads of information supporting the debunking of global warming. Then why is it some believe it is true and a problem while others think it is false and is not a problem? It all boils down to subjectivity and the freedom to choose. And subjectivity is determined by more factors than one can imagine. But you can bet your last dollar that fear is lurking somewhere in the recesses of the mind on both sides of the issue. Nobody can tell the future and nobody will ever tell the future. All telling of the future is nothing more than guessing, or hypothesizing, utilizing the tools and information we have at hand. But, even our tools and information we use changes from day to day, and thus our predictions change. There is only one constant we have, and that is fear. Fear has been with us from day one and continues to influence everything we do. But I have to ask you, “Do you think any of the great discoveries in math and science, medicine, engineering, or physics, have been accomplished while the discoverer was in a state of fear? In the absence of fear we access an area of our being where the answers exist. Whether it be of divine nature or the parts of the brain we say are not being used, whatever your persuasion, it is crucial to work in the absence of fear. The author of this article should be admired for his audacity to write an article that will surely bring him some praise and plenty ridicule. On the other hand his use of adjectives that cultivate fear is in question. But he is certainly not alone here. The use of fear to get people to do something is as common as fried chicken at a 4th of July picnic. Just beware that when we go into fear we isolate ourselves from that part of us that has the answers.

D-Movie-Plot February 8, 2011 9:44 am (Pacific time)
Much of what is presented in this article is pseudo-science. The Earth's core is a giant rotating mass of iron and other trace elements. For the magnetic field to change in any significant way, the core's rotation would need to stop. There are few things which have a sufficient amount of energy to affect the rotation of the core. The most likely event would be a collision with a planetary body. Fortunately, the chances of this happening at this stage of the planet's evolution are quite low. I suspect the sun will transition into a red giant and consume the Earth before the opportunity for such a collision presents itself again. But we won't be around to see it.

Dan February 8, 2011 7:01 am (Pacific time)
After a brief moment of panic, I decided to do a whole 5 minutes of online research to discover that this story is hogwash. First quote by David Stern, a scientist at nasa: "Some people worry that during magnetic reversals the Earth would receive a higher dosage of high-energy ions and electrons ("radiation" in common terms), which might affect us and any living creatures on Earth. This is not so. Even today, the magnetic shield is not effective near the magnetic poles, yet the radiation received there on the ground is only slightly higher than anywhere else. The reason is that our main shield against such particles is not the magnetic field of the Earth but the atmosphere, equivalent to some 10 feet of concrete." And the next quote which is a response to the question "Does the magnetosphere affect the weather": "I don't think so, we have no evidence for it. For at least two reasons, we do not expect any, either. First, our atmosphere is electrically neutral and does not conduct electricity (below 50 km, anyway--and weather stays below 10-20 km). Substances of this kind (except maybe permanent magnet, a very special case) do not react to magnetic fields. When a doctor puts your body inside the strong magnet of an MRI machine, you feel no difference, except maybe for the loud noise that machine makes. Second, weather gets its energy from heat deposited by sunlight on the surface of Earth. The energy of the magnetosphere, on the other hand, comes from the solar wind. A beam of the solar wind as wide as the magnetosphere carries only about 1/3500 as much energy as sunlight hitting Earth, and only about 1% of that is given to the magnetosphere. Of that, only a fraction reaches the upper atmosphere. It seems too little to make a difference, and it is not clear how it might move further down." What tipped me off to the possible misinformation is this article was not published in a peer reviewed scientific journal, but at a website that pays authors based on hom many hits they get. Practically all that energy, by the way, is channeled to the auroral zone, near the poles. As was said--no clear correlation has been observed, there or elsewhere. You may not get a scientist to say "absolutely no," but "very unlikely" may be just as good.

Interesting article with some scientific facts, but consists of a great deal of speculation and the article should be written as such. Does anyone believe that nothing is going to happen. History says that we have gone into ice ages and warm times repeatedly. What causes all this change? Don't you ever stop to think how this is possible. It is far bigger than humankind and all that we can do. Think for a minute that if you took all the people of the world and gave each person an area of about 18 square feet (6x3 feet) you could put all the people on the planet in the space of about 23000 square miles or little more than half of the state I live in. We can not generate enough heat or carbon dioxide to overpower what the earth naturally puts out. Now we know that gravity holds us in place but did you know that in Canada there is a place where the gravity is less than everywhere else? The magnetic field is responsible for everything staying on this planet and if the magnetic field is interrupted then everything is going to be affected, how much remains to be seen. We know that the magnetic field of Mars has dwindled and is believed to be the reason that Mars lost ability to sustain life. There is so much that we do not know it is scary. The planet is making some big changes with or without our consent. If you don't believe it then just sit back and watch.
rc February 7, 2011 10:37 pm (Pacific time)
Not believable in any way. Whenever someone suggests change, look for the money and who will earn it. The governments is not the problem. Profiteers are. They profit from FEAR. Bush / Cheney / Halliburton war profiteers. Al Gore / Green energy profiteers. A very rich man from very poor science. I am right now freezing my ass off in the global warming state of Ohio, while Al Gore is staying warm burning 100$ bills earned from his green energy start ups. lol. Republican/Democrat doesn't matter. Always follow the money.

Pseudo-science nonsense. as first off, there is not reversal of the magnetosphere and secondly there would be no effects on weather.
Dennyc February 7, 2011 5:44 pm (Pacific time)
I can find nothing that supports this story. For example, the Economist story makes no mention whatever of a link between space conditions and atmospheric weather or storms. I suppose that either the author made it up, or holds some gross confusion between space "weather" and the stuff that generates rain and snow on the ground.
Jake February 7, 2011 3:26 pm (Pacific time)
Interesting read. It's unfortunate that people can't be at least a litte open-minded when reading something that contradicts their view point. Why read an article if you aren't at least for two seconds consider somebody else's point of view. I don't necessarily agree with this, much like I don't really agree with global warming. The fact is; Earth's climate is changing, and it's possible we are to blame, and it's possible there has been a magnetic shift. Who knows?

We need to quickly assemble a massive international response to counter this man-made magnetic pole shift. We should position several tens of thousands of folks (from the developing world) to the east of the current polar north pole with hand-held magnets with their "southern" ends facing the Earth's north pole -- and thus gradually force the pole back to where it belongs. By the way, I've begun to set up a business to supply magnets for this purpose. The hundreds of millions of dollars I'll receive from the magnet sales will pull our country out of the Bush recession!

Wake up, people. Of all the environmental "crises" that the liberal neo-environmentalist left has made up, the "global warming" myth is the most dangerous to you. This article describes but a single phenomenon we should worrry much more about than the stuff that makes your soda fizzy. They are trying to kill propserity, industrialization, capitalism, freedom, and using the made-up crisis of "the planet" as the fuel to get the planet's sheeple to go along, demand "laws" and regulations. DO NOT buy it. Of all the things we need to worry about environmentally, CO2 is the least of it. Take it from someone who's been in the environmental business 20+ years. Human emissions of CO2 DO NOT cause Thermageddon. And the next Ice Age (little or not) is something that will make CO2 look like a joke.
Jim Ellis February 7, 2011 9:44 am (Pacific time)
global warming is much at blame for polar shift. They coincide in history too. Ice melting at poles is causing polar tectonic plates to rise. Its called isostatic lift. look it up. That ice also is a huge balancing weight as the earth spins. change the balance on a cieling fan and it wobbles. earth does the same. Global warming to blame. Yes. Politics too. Mining/oil companies make trillions as poles uncover new areas. they suppress green tech and pressure politics favor. It all teis together. ultimately God and nature are more powerful than all that. Respect both and we will be ok. That simple and that complex. Amen
Jim Ellis February 7, 2011 9:39 am (Pacific time)
Thank global warming? The magnetic shifts are in part due to the poles tilting as the ice caps melt. They act like balancing weights. The magnetic field is created by our core spinning inside the outer shell spinning the opposite way. This is out of balance now, worsened by the continental plates rising as the weight of ice is removed magma is shifting and plates in the lower areas are sinking. Thus massive earthquakes. thank corporate greed too, the mining interests are drooling at gold and oil in arctic and want it to melt. They buy off politicians and suppress green technology. The effects of all greed, politics, science, nature and God all come together. Save the world saves us. Go green, reform politics, follow God and fight fascism!
Gus Tatori February 7, 2011 9:31 am (Pacific time)
The author loses credibility in a number of places by overstating or outright fabricating situations and then presenting them as facts. One such action is stating that the recent cyclone in Australia should have been a category 6 - there is no category 6 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, it only goes to category 5 which has no upper wind speed limit. If the author is using another storm classification system, he should state this, otherwise it makes him look less than credible. The mistake global warming theorists make is extrapolating short term weather to long term climate change. The author makes these same mistakes.

brisbanite February 7, 2011 7:52 am (Pacific time)
To confirm, the floods in brisbane were gone in 3 days. The flooding to the west was flash flooding, quickly flowing downhill and out to sea, (through brisbane, coupled with a king tide, spelled problems). The flooding to the north rose and fell over a 2 week period, although they had experienced floods a month or two prior. Tropical cyclone Yasi was category 5 and caused tidal surges, with flooding in low coastal areas. It must be mentioned that Queensland historically has a monsoon in summer, locally called cyclone season, or the wet. For about 20 years we have experienced droughts, with strong El ninos and moderate La ninas. This season is made worse by a particularly strong La Nina event. The last really strong La Nina brought similar weather conditions to Australia in 1973/1974 with widespread floods and cyclones.

What a fascinating article. I was reading only a couple of weeks ago about the magnetic pole moving across northern Canada towards Russia. What I find striking is the number of negative criticisms from scientists, or students of science. This makes sense because a lot of the science being taught is baloney. I am amazed at the narrow minded thinking of scientists and how many crazy, unprovable theories are being released. This is excellent. Thank you.

"Shocked authorities now numbly concede that much of the water may never dissipate and have wearily resigned themselves to the possibility that region will now contain a new inland sea." Ummm. No. As an Aussie familiar with that area; I am calling you on that comment. Not true, False. WRONG. Water CANNOT pool on the side of a mountain. Post some concrete supportive evidence to support your baseless statement. Oh, and Tiger sharks are not found that far up riverine systems. It was by all accounts a riverine bull shark. And also dead. Nice try; FAIL.

This is not unexpected. The poles reverse periodically and cause catastrophic weather changes.

Personally, I like the way the site is, but then I am a bit of a bog trotter who always thinks that older things work better. If it aint broke don't fix it. It would seem that the oldest myth in the world is that the world is about to end. I don't know if it is or not and I have been around such ideas since I was born 42 years ago. Despite all the near holocausts, we're still here. But I do think things are very fragile, and I do see, for whatever reasons, that climate is changing at a fast rate. But then, climate has always changed, it is the nature of it to do so. What makes things so fragile is that we are not equipped to deal with it. Our civilisation is young and has grown massively due to having an abundance of oil. And that has happened over a short time and has been built in a time of relative climatic stability. There seem endless arguments and views as to how much climate is changing and why; how much it is man made and how much it is natural cycles and indeed, the notion that I prefer myself, is that it is both. there are natural cycles and we are part of them so we contribute to the process at the time. What I see as inevitable is change, and what ever the cause, what is more important is what you do when it happens. One thing that is clear to me is that those who have always been closest to nature are those who suffer least when there is change. And most often because they know it is coming, as most animals, birds and insects tend to know. Having grown up close to the land and the sea and being close to nature most of my life, what I see is that science is very inadequate at describing nature. And despite all our cleverness, we seem to need satelittes and computers to tell us what the weather is going to do. Yet ants can burrow deeper when they know the weather is going to get colder. Migrating birds going long distance know when it is the ideal time to go; and they don't have iPods with accuweather. Having studied climate change all my life, I have come to the conclusion that no one actually knows what is happening although lots of people would purport to. I don't. But I do know that nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend. Resilience is the ability to embrace change and work well with it, whatever the cause. For my own part, I love growing food, being outdoors, weather it is sunny or stormy and feel comforted by seeing that the birds, trees, insects and life around me know something brilliant and create excellently and endlessly in ways that science just can't. As William Blake said, "we dance around in a ring and suppose, while the secret sits in the middle and knows"

For the record, Yasi was not considered a category 5 on the American SSHS by the unofficial JTWC, which provides 1-minute wind estimates for storms in all non-Atlantic basins (for the purposes of US armed forces). It may have briefly gained the 140 knot winds to qualify for that category. The official met office for that basin more or less agreed on windspeed (though it used the 10-minute standard). Storms of roughly that strength happen at least 2 or 3 times a year, usually more; it is not uncommon for them to develop in the wate
joeblow February 6, 2011 12:28 pm (Pacific time)
i am a climate change "believer" but this story is beyond sensational! no wonder half the world won't buy climate change theories when you have to use words like "superstorm" and "mega" constantly. this is fear mongering, and detracts from real problems associated with slow, gradual climate change.

Rich h February 6, 2011 10:42 am (Pacific time)
Yasi did not have winds of 190MPH winds. It had 135 MPH winds. On the Saffir-Simpson scale it was a Category 4 storm, not a Category 5. (The Aussies have their own scale where they call a strong Cat 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, a cat 5.) This story ought to be corrected.

Mr. Aym writes for Helium.com, and this article is on many websites - all pointing to Helium for the rest of the story. That is fine with me, as a believer in free enterprise. And Mr. Aym is a good writer, but sensation always does best. Many scientic organizations have written about the shifting of the magnetic north pole, though I read 40 km, not miles. This is true, and quite fascinating. What I don't find discussed on scientific websites is a link between this phenomenon and the world's weather ... yet, he may be right, of course. The world's weather does seem to be more chaotic lately, but why are we surprised? Earth = Change. Regarding this website, I am a website developer. Yeah, it is a bit outdated ... the link button thing is old, but who gives a flying flip. We should be visiting websites for information, not critiquing the site's look according to our own tastes. How shallow and mean - I pity some of these readers. At least the website ads are non-intrusive, thank you. It was an interesting read which led me to look further into the topic, and I learned something already today. Love the photos. (PS: Wrap the paragraphs in a div and put the class on the div).

Is there any end to our strange desire for End of Times in our own lifetime? I feel I am living in the Medieval Era-Redux. The self-importance of individuals and groups is limitless; each of us/them seem to consider us/them so special that now is the time that the Universe will turn its attention to our persons. We thought that Jerry Springer and Oprah spoke for just the self-involved few. Turns out they speak for all of us.

Emerson February 5, 2011 7:43 pm (Pacific time)
You mean this can't be stopped by redistributing wealth from those who earn to those who don't and often refuse to? I can't process this!!!
DJ:In my experience Americans, as a culture, can't get past the fact that they are all in it together. Those who don't earn is a tiny part of the whole population, and that group has almost all the wealth. Did Bill Gates (only as one example) actually earn his billions? Of course not.He is a technical genius and certainly started some significant innovations but there two key factors in his accumulation of wealth. He was lucky that the system was set up to allow for his accumulation; he was able to sign an agreement with IBM at the outset that gave MS a royalty for every version of DOS distributed. Don't forget that he didn't even invent DOS. When IBM was looking for an operating system, he bought it from a local developer (not forgetting that he was born into a wealthy family to start with) and presented it to IBM. The other factor is the tens of thousands of MS employees who made the company and it's growth possible. No man is an island and no matter how much a genius, it requires other people to make things work. Having said this, Gates is a genius programmer and undoubtedly has earned more than most others, but billions? I don't think so.
Conservative columnist David Brooks once explained American culture very succinctly. Americans do not vote, reality, but they vote their aspirations. An American does not see himself as poor but rather as pre-rich. In other words, against all odds, Americans tend to see themselves as holding a ticket in the lottery that Bill Gates and a few others have won. There's one lottery they can't win, hoewver, unless their parents names are Rockefeller, DuPont, etc.
Add these factors together and you have the top 10% or so of Americans holding about 90% of the nation's total wealth with the rest of the citizens having little or even negative net worth (The U.S. is the most financially inequitable developed nation in the world). Nineteenth century sociologist Edward Yumans concluded: "We are born well, or born badly, and that whoever is ushered into existence at the bottom of the scale can never rise to the top because the weight of the universe is upon him." This is because the legal system is set up by the rich and for the rich Democracy is supposed to be a oountervailing factor but, of course, most Americans don't actually believe in democracy. Their current economic and political imbroglio demonstrates that.

Scares the crap out of me. I'm no scientist but I've had an interest for over 30 years. I watch the USGS-site and have notice a steady increase in earthquake activity and magnitude over the past 8-10 months or so. I watch the news (weather mostly) and am a devote Christian with a very strong faith in God and (parts of) the Bible and I can tell you that something is coming to a head. For the next 2 years AT LEAST we're going to get hit with all kinds of stuff. Bet your a$$.

First of all, I would like to address the nitwit that calls himself The Editor is Stupid. You are a clown. Find another way to express your self loathing than attempting "unsuccessfully I might add" to berate someone who is obviously more successfull than yourself at managing an open forum and go away. I like this site, and I think they do a great job. Content is way more important than "bling". Kudos to Ed for taking the high road. Secondly, to all of you who are citing religious phoenomenon, good luck with that. I am not saying that to spark an arguement, after all, you can't have a rational argument with religious people, otherwise there would be no religion. Peace!

Global warming is like a very big wave crossing an ocean. Polar shift and other contributing factors to climate change are like wind fueling it's ferocity and speed. Human impact on the climate is like a coral reef in the path of this wave.

Editor, you say, "Yeah? Well this Website is over six years old and kicks serious ass in regard to visitor numbers so I guess your point is pretty weak". That has nothing to do with the fact that your website looks as if a group of middle school children created it as a school project. Hire a web designer or buy a template for Christ's sake. The fact that you even took the time to respond to comments shows you have the free time to create a better site than this cheap pile of crap. Taking anything written on here as fact takes an enormous amount of fact checking and faith. Get this site out of the 90's DUDE.
Editor: You're a technoid and I'm journalist and the site works fine. I haven't had a comment like this in a long time. So, try not being insulting and I will too. The site is built from scratch and it i one of the fastest loading news sites online, is that at least somewhat significant to you? You are going 100% off the look and I know it ha been the same for a long time. Doing what we do doesn't bring a lot of support, know what I mean? Honesty brings 'controversy' and even if you are right about the site not being very modern looking, the content kicks ass and most people don't worry about the look. Anyway, there are plans and I look forward to being more modern, OK? In the meanwhile the content takes 100% of our time. Thanks.

You fearful children, there is no evidence whatsoever in either the fossil or geologic record to suggest climatic upheaval associated with the Earth's magnetic field shifts. There are no associated die-offs, no dramatic Hollywood-style catastrophes, just a reversal of polarity. Compasses will point in a new direction, maps will have inaccurate declination lines- so what? Life goes on as always. If you *need* something to worry about may I suggest resource scarcity (fuels, water, metals)? I hear that's coming into style.

I don't understand why you ninnies are insulting this author when it is OBVIOUS that something terribly wrong is happening to our climate. It also obviously involves the entire Solar System and is not man made. I guess you are just too frightened to consider that this might be true. Yes, catastrophic climate change can happen VERY quickly. Consider the mammoths found in Siberia that still had food in their mouths and stomachs when they were found - that means they didn't even have time to decompose at all before they were flash frozen. Their meat was still edible. Whatever happened to them - happened VERY quickly and finished off the species.

Those who continue to deny the weather-link between cosmic magnetism and the earth's magnetic field (let alone the proven movement of the north pole) are practicing Ostrich Logic. In the early 1950's an interesting trio of books on this very phenomenon was published and similarly pooh-poohed: "Worlds in Collision" and "Earth in Upheaval" and "Ages in Chaos" by Immanuel Velikovsky. The way in which the so-called scholarly community responded to Dr. Velikovsky's research in the 1950's is reflected again today by the attitude of those who hoot at this article. Not much ever changes but the weather. As a physics student, I can confidently say that this is one of the most ridiculous stories I've ever read. You've taken what amount to a few preliminary studies that don't make strong conclusions and overstated the impact of their conclusions to the most unrealistic degree possible. You are not a trained scientist, stop acting like an expert. You are misleading people.

Trust me, when He has the last word NOBODY will be laughing or scoffing. Hang in there, Terrence. I'm not sure just how much evidence there is or not for the magnetosphere causing superstorms but it seems plausible. What's also hilarious are those who think nothing out of the ordinary is happening. LOL!

To make it easy for the eletes: From the British Geological Society: The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is known to be growing in extent and spreading westwards from South Africa, as the Earth’s internal magnetic field rapidly weakens in this region. This may be early evidence of a forthcoming reversal in the direction of the Earth’s internal magnetic field. We do not know in detail precisely what occurs during such reversals, including the changes observed in the magnetic field and the time a reversal takes to complete. However these factors are important in knowing where the radiation risk may be increased and how the atmosphere might respond. Earth’s magnetic field has had many highs, lows and reversals in its past. The last reversal was around 800,000 years ago. So the Earth is known to be able to re-generate its field and has done so during human pre-history. Understanding the development of the SAA may therefore be significant in understanding the reversal process and its impact on life and the natural environment. Complete info is at bgs.ac.uk/research/highlights/southAtlantic2010.html

It is wonderful to see such a collection of inquistive minds commenting on the article.
Of course we all know that it is impossible that the poles may shift again. The days of pole shifting are past.
And of course we know that the earth's magnetic field has nothing to do with weather.
It is so much easier to nit pick than to look at the background material and learn something new.
Graham February 4, 2011 7:37 pm (Pacific time)
Magnetic Pole Reversal is a fact. It has happened many times. It is coming. It is overdue. If it is happening at preent, it means certain major destruction, globally and can be a extinction event for certain species. This all is FACT. Rather worrying, but absolutely nothing ccan be done about it, so live your life, the most of every day, hour, minute.

NASA seems to have a contrary view from this doofus: http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/lookingatearth/29dec_magneticfield.html

May I suggest reading this article....http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/07/magnetic-north-pole-shift-affects-tampa-airport/ Magnetic North is shifting toward Siberia at rate of 40 miles per year. Einstein even warned of a Pole Shift. How it affects climate I'm not sure, but we are in the middle of an extreme Pole Shift.

For all you snide, snotty elitists--this story makes about as much sense as global warming.
Anonymous February 4, 2011 8:40 pm (Pacific time)
Terrence Aym is indeed a Renaissance Man inasmuch as he has a woeful lack of understanding about natural phenomena and a burning paranoid wish fantasy to scare people about an imminent catastrophe. File under "magnetic hoax." This is not magnetosphere news.
Timbo February 4, 2011 8:32 pm (Pacific time)
I was about the spend time waxing poetic on this author's idiocy, but I see I've been beaten to the punch. Glad to see it doesn't take a wizard like me to point out just how wrong this article is. How did it ever make it to Fark?
Cyclone yasi February 4, 2011 8:31 pm (Pacific time)
I will huff and puff and blow your houses down.
australian February 4, 2011 7:58 pm (Pacific time)
"After the deluge tiger sharks were spotted swimming between houses in what was once a quiet suburban neighborhood" - incorrect, they were bull sharks, which naturaly occur in the brisbane river. "Shocked authorities now numbly concede that much of the water may never dissipate and have wearily resigned themselves to the possibility that region will now contain a new inland sea." - um... I live in Australia, and haven't heard anything like this at all... in fact the floods that were in brisbane have gone, and I see no evidence of an "inland sea" did you even bother to look for sources before writing this crap?
Jon Carry February 4, 2011 7:29 pm (Pacific time)
Such unbelievable nonsense! We have no long term data to support this junk science. We aren't even breaking snow, temperature, or rain records. This is all simply normal weather.
skekze February 4, 2011 7:05 pm (Pacific time)
Thanks for the scaremongering. We're doomed. DOOMED I TELL YOU. At least you're coming to hell with us, ya "renaissance man". Unless you all escape with Richard Branson aboard his Virgin Spaceshuttle. Good luck, ya doctor who wannabe.
Confused February 4, 2011 7:02 pm (Pacific time)
Are people really this stupid?
Dr. Maxwell Gauss February 4, 2011 6:34 pm (Pacific time)
This is a very poorly written collection of nonsense. The very few citations present in the body of the article do not support the thesis at the beginning of the article, nor the conclusion at the end. Indeed, this seems more likely to be an exercise in self-promotion than a piece of journalism. Shame on you Salem News.
can I comment February 4, 2011 6:31 pm (Pacific time)
please?
bob the builder February 4, 2011 6:24 pm (Pacific time)
sounds like sara palin wrote this BS. Add some god references and you got some good reading NOT
Satori February 4, 2011 6:18 pm (Pacific time)
FYI this shark you speak of was a Bull Shark not Tiger Shark, Found in Ipswich City 50km form the coast... BRACKISH WATER... If you cant get that right, well you be the judge... There is however some good information here BUT has been Mashed up and distorted with a lot of disinformation. Peace

All I had to see was that he was from OBAMA land, CHICAGO, go tell it on the mountains, to the new Messiah, Oboomee!!!
Mike February 4, 2011 5:04 pm (Pacific time)
How does the author of this "article" still have a job? I cannot believe that a newspaper would publish this. This is "did not do the research" with the volume cranked up to 11.
Dave February 4, 2011 4:46 pm (Pacific time)
Complete and utter nonsense. Might as well base your science on "The Day After Tomorrow" Yes the Earth's Magnetic Field switches, but at a rate of thousands of years. Nothing but fear mongering for attention. Oh and the self styled "Renisance Man" in the author description... Classic. I doubt anyone who had a true foundation in science and scientific procedure would imbue such attempted panic inducing overtones into his "ahem" report.
Mister Earl February 4, 2011 4:45 pm (Pacific time)
May I humbly suggest the author retake his third grade science classes? It might do wonders to prevent logical abortions like this article.
Mike February 4, 2011 4:10 pm (Pacific time)
Very well written article; in fact, I'd say you should be promoted to a position that would allow you to write on non-bullshit topics.
Dumb by osmosis February 4, 2011 4:05 pm (Pacific time)
Is English the primary or native language for anyone commenting on this article?
Steve D February 4, 2011 4:02 pm (Pacific time)
Are you kidding me? The water in Australia will never dissipate? It's not in a closed basin - it's on a coastland drained by rivers! Who exactly are these authorities that predict 300-400 mph storms? There's absolutely no connection between the magnetopause paper and weather. At least the movie 2012 was entertaining - this is just crackpot.
Juan February 4, 2011 1:06 pm (Pacific time)
A precession does not occur in 7 years, it takes 26,000 years for a complete 360 precession
nytmare February 4, 2011 3:35 pm (Pacific time)
After reading the headline, I'm wondering what planet you're talking about. After reading the article, I wonder what planet you're from.
roy February 4, 2011 3:26 pm (Pacific time)
A ludicrous article. Not a single scientific article or scientist is cited. Fiction, yes. Science, no
Tom February 4, 2011 2:57 pm (Pacific time)
Well, time to start panicking. Where's my traffic cone hat?
Thomas February 4, 2011 1:42 pm (Pacific time)

Thanks you for a most excellent summary and explanation of what we are now facing. I have been preparing for this for the past five years - stocking and storing a long-term food larder, household supplies, medicines, seeds and most importantly, information. While this will only be useful for the short term, at least I am trying. Again, thanks.
mememine69 February 4, 2011 2:31 am (Pacific time)
Is my SUV causing this too? Climate change has do to science and journalism what abusive priests did to religion.
