Car Jacking Reported in Oregon City

The suspect is not a US Citizen and immigration authorities have been contacted regarding his arrest.

(OREGON CITY) - Police in Gresham say they are looking for a man they believe is responsible for a car jacking that took place December 30th at 1:30 PM in the parking lot of the Regal movie theater located at 1500 Molalla Avenue, Oregon City.

Det Sgt James Band with Oregon City Police says 24-year old Andrey Karachenets made contact with a woman in her vehicle, contact that led to the woman's car being jacked.

"Karachenets asked the woman for a ride. When she refused to give him a ride he jumped into her vehicle and attempted to take her keys and steal her vehicle. The woman was able to get out of the vehicle with her keys and yell for help."

Band say says Karachenets ran on foot to the Danielson's Market Place,located in the same complex and approached a male subject sitting in his vehicle in front of the store.

Karachenets asked the man for a ride and when he refused, Karachenets jumped into the man's vehicle and tried to steal the keys and the car, Band said.

"The victim struggled with Karachenets and Karachenets bit the victim creating an injury. An off duty sheriff's deputy happened to walk out of the store and see the struggle going on. He was able to apprehend the suspect and detain him until the Oregon City Police Department arrived."

Detectives investigating this case learned the Andrey Karachenets, a Portland resident, had just been released from Clackamas County jail prior to this incident. Karachenets is not a US Citizen and ICE has been contacted regarding his arrest.

Karachenets was lodged at Clackamas County Jail for two counts of Robbery III, two counts Attempted Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and one counts of Assault IV.
