(VERNONIA, Ore.) - The town of Vernonia and surrounding communities in Columbia County have been ravaged by recent storm damage and weather conditions are not helping the situation as we move through the weekend. New slide damage is more bad news for a community that has already seen its share. Officials in Columbia County reported today that a major slide has occurred on Timber Road, closing it to all traffic in both directions. Fortunately there have been no reports of any injuries. The highway slide is located approximately 6 miles from Highway 47 and Vernonia and about 2 miles from Highway 26 at Timber Junction. Timber Road is a County Road that serves as an access from the Vernonia Area to Highway 26. Columbia County Road Department, Washington County along with the Oregon Department of Transportation are responding and are at the slide location. Flood Relief Center The Columbia County Flood Relief Center which is headquartered in Vernonia, serves all communities affected by the flood and mudslides in Columbia County. These areas include Mist/Birkenfield, Fishhawk Lake, St. Helens, Clatskanie, Westport, Woodson, and Vernonia.
