Special Weather Statement Issued by NWS Portland (Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington)

winter weather

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - According to the National Weather Service, snow levels will be low Sunday morning for the greater Portland metro area, and the lower Columbia region.

Next, the new frontal system will spread precipitation to the north and central Willamette Valley, Clark County in SW Washington, and the I-5 corridor in Cowlitz County on Sunday.

Snow levels Sunday morning will be around 500 to 1000 feet, but below 500 feet in areas influenced by the Columbia River Gorge. There is potential for mixed rain and snow Sunday morning below 500 feet, especially north of Salem and near the Columbia Gorge.

Up to an inch accumulation is possible above 750 feet.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for the Coast Range and the Willapa Hills for Snow.

Snow is expected to develop in the early morning then diminish again in the afternoon. Snow levels will range from around 500 feet on the eastern slopes to 1500 feet on the west slopes. 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected, with the heaviest amounts above 1500 feet.

Snow will make travel across the passes hazardous. A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibility, and use caution while driving.
