(SALEM, Ore.) - PORTLAND AREA

(7:30 PM) PORTLAND CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS:
1. CLOSED: NE Wisteria from NE 39th to 41st Avenues;
2. CLOSED: SW 30th Avenue from SW Vermont downhill to Beaverton Hillsdale Highway;
3. CLOSED: Germantown Road

The City advises the public not to go out in this storm if you don't have to. If you must go out, use transit if possible. If you must drive, use traction tires or chains. They are required on all State Highways, including those that go through the city of Portland -- Powell Blvd, 82nd Ave, Barbur Blvd, Lombard Street, Sandy Blvd (outer east site), and Macadam (Hwy 43).

Because temperatures are forecasted to stay low or continue to drop, the public is advised that road conditions will likely be icy all over the city through the night and through Monday. Because of unpredictable East winds, snow levels are expected to be variable around the city.

City crews are on full callout, which entails two 12-hour shifts in a 24-hour period. All available resources are being devoted to storm response -- monitoring locations all around the city, applying de-icing chemical, laying sand and gravel, and plowing.

Stay tuned to local weather forecasts and traffic reports.

4. PROBLEM/POTENTIAL CLOSURE: NE 33rd Avenue at NE Fremont.

The City advises the public not to go out in this storm if you don't have to. If you must go out, use transit if possible. If you must drive, use traction tires or chains. They are required on all State Highways, including those that go through the city of Portland -- Powell Blvd, 82nd Ave, Barbur Blvd, Lombard Street, and Macadam (Hwy 43).

ODOT Region 1: Chains are now required on vehicles on ALL HIGHWAYS in the Portland Metro area--not just I-5, but ALL of them.

ODOT doesn't issue this requirement very often, but driving conditions have deteriorated VERY quickly since 9:00 AM.

(9:44 AM) I-5 is now closed IN BOTH DIRECTIONS near Barbur due to weather-related incidents.

U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) westbound--going up the Sylvan Hill--is closed temporarily to help remove a number of vehicles that can't make it up the hill under these conditions.

CLACKAMAS COUNTY: (11:00 AM) Weather conditions have worsened in Clackamas County over the past several hours with strong snow squalls engulving Oregon City and much of the east county.

The county has added two more road crews to cope with frozen conditions that have led to a few minor accidents. There are 12 crews working on county roads. They are attacking reports of slick spots called in by motorists and police.

Motorists are asked to stay off the roads unless travel is vital. The snow is expected to continue throughout the day and temperatures are expected to drop below feezing today and stay there for much of the coming week.
