(SANDY, Ore. ) - Four people from Portland were killed early Monday morning in a single vehicle accident in rural Clackamas County.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office identified those killed as the driver; 31-year-old Brandon Mayo, and his three passengers; 20-year-old Shalene Newland, 20-year-old Jesse Jasso-Varsamas, and 39-year-old Suzanne Marie Varsamas.

Deputies say there was dog in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and it is being treated at a local veterinary hospital for it's injuries.

At approximately 2:28 a.m., Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash on SE Lusted Rd at SE Hudson Rd, an unincorporated area of Clackamas County north of the City of Sandy. Other responding agencies included the Sandy Police Department, Sandy Fire Department, and American Medical Response.

A citizen who lived near the crash called 9-1-1 to report the vehicle collided with a tree, was on fire, and carried four passengers including the driver. The citizen quickly reacted and helped one of the back seat passengers out of the vehicle before the fire engulfed the entire vehicle along with the other occupants. The three other occupants were unable to escape the vehicle and were discovered to be dead by first responders.

The injured passenger was flown to a Portland area hospital by Life Flight. The sheriff's office was later notified by hospital staff that the passenger died as a result of his injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
