One of America's Funniest Men, Robin Williams, Dead at 63

Williams received two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards.

Actor-comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday at his home in Northern California from an apparent suicide, Marin County Sheriff's Office said. He was 63.

The sheriff's coroner's division said it suspects the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning," rep Mara Buxbaum said in a statement."He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Dubbed “the funniest man alive” by Entertainment Weekly in 1997, Williams rose to fame with his role as the alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy (1978-1982).

Williams went on to establish a successful career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting. His film career included such acclaimed films as Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989), Awakenings (1990), The Fisher King (1991), and Good Will Hunting (1997), as well as financial successes such as Popeye (1980), Hook (1991), Aladdin (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Jumanji (1995), The Birdcage (1996), Night at the Museum (2006), and Happy Feet (2006). He also appeared in the video to "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, Williams went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Good Will Hunting (1997).

He also received two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards.

Williams once told "Good Morning America" that he struggled with alcoholism and cocaine abuse in the early '80s, but quit after his friend John Belushi overdosed in 1982. Then, after beginning to drink again in 2006, he sought professional help.

Williams is survived by his wife and three children – son Zachary, 31; daughter Zelda, 25 and son Cody, 22. Williams married Schneider, his third wife, in 2011.

His wife, Susan Schneider, said in statement: "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Williams, who most recently starred in the CBS comedy "The Crazy Ones," had recently entered rehab in July, though it was reported at the time that he had entered the Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center in Minnesota in order to maintain his long-term sobriety.
