Teens Trapped by High Tide Rescued

(CANNON BEACH, Ore. ) - The Coast Guard assisted in the rescue of two teenagers stranded near Cannon Beach Sunday.

An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, based out of Warrenton, Oregon, hoisted the two teenagers aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter where aircrew members treated them for hypothermia.

The Jayhawk crew returned to Air Station Astoria and met with local emergency medical services, who then transported the teenagers to Columbia Memorial Hospital to be reunited with their parents.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Oregon, received notification of two missing teenagers, at 12:14 a.m.

They were reportedly last seen walking along the rocks near Cannon Beach prior to high tide. The reporting source said that the tide had come in and his two companions had not returned.

The aircrew was launched and met with local police and local fire and rescue members who reportedly sighted both missing teenagers stranded on the rocks due to the tide.

“Hikers who get stranded by the incoming tide is all to common an occurrence,” said Mark Dobney, command duty officer at Sector Columbia River. “Anyone who is planning on hiking along the beach should always check the tide table and plan accordingly before going. Thankfully because of our continued training and coordination with local authorities, this mission was a success and we were able to get two people back home to their families.”
