How Brilliant Computer Scientists Solved the Bermuda Triangle Mystery

Oceanographic surveyors of the sea floor in the area of the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea region between continental Europe and Great Britain have discovered significant quantities of methane hydrates and older eruption sites.

(CHICAGO) - According to two research scientists the mystery of vanished ships and airplanes in the region dubbed "The Bermuda Triangle" has been solved.

Step aside outer space aliens, time anomalies, submerged giant Atlantean pyramids and bizarre meteorological phenomena ... the "Triangle" simply suffers from an acute case of gas.

Natural gas—the kind that heats ovens and boils water—specifically methane, is the culprit behind the mysterious disappearances and loss of water and air craft.

The evidence for this astounding new insight into a mystery that's bedeviled the world is laid out in a research paper published in the American Journal of Physics.

Professor Joseph Monaghan researched the hypothesis with honor student David May at the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

The two hypothesized that large methane bubbles rising from the ocean floor might account for many, if not all, of the mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft at specific locales around the world.

Researcher Ivan T. Sanderson identified these mystery areas during the 1960s. Sanderson described the actual shape of these regions as more like a lozenge rather than a triangle. Some of the more famous spots include an area in the Sea of Japan, the North Sea, and of course the infamous "Bermuda (or Devil's) Triangle."

Oceanographic surveyors of the sea floor in the area of the Bermuda Triangle and the North Sea region between continental Europe and Great Britain have discovered significant quantities of methane hydrates and older eruption sites.

Because of the correlations and existing data, the two envisioned what would happen when gigantic methane bubbles explode from natural fissures on the seafloor.

The methane—normally frozen at great pressure as gas hydrates embedded within subterranean rock—can become dislodged and transform into gaseous bubbles expanding geometrically as they explode upwards. When these bubbles reach the surface of the water they soar into the air, still expanding upwards and outwards.

Any ships caught within the methane mega-bubble immediately lose all buoyancy and sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Aircraft falling victim to these methane bubbles will lose their engines-perhaps igniting the methane surrounding them-and immediately lose their lift as well, ending their flights by diving into the ocean and swiftly plummeting to the sea bottom.

In most cases little or no wreckage would be found by searchers.

Using the latest in computer modeling, Monaghan and May tested their theory. The modeling program, based on the scientific principles of fluid dynamics, accounted for all the variables including the velocity of a giant methane bubble, its pressure, and the density of the gas and surrounding water.

To provide a check on the accuracy of their hypothesis, the two scientists built a large tank, filled it with water to simulate the regions of the earth where ships and planes have reportedly disappeared over the last century, and launched large methane gas bubbles from the bottom of the tank towards a toy ship floating on the surface of the water.

The results were impressive and the physical tests mirrored the computer model. The two found that the ship sank if it was between the middle of a bubble and its outer edges.

If the ship was far enough away from the edge of the bubble—or directly over it—the ship would sail on safely. Despite not sinking, however, if the methane bubble was big enough and the ship was positioned at or near the center of the bubble when it surfaced, every one on the ship could be asphyxiated.

This would account for several famous cases where ships were found in the Triangle with everyone aboard dead without a scratch.

As a bubble surfaced the water rose dramatically creating a sphere of water. Yes, the ship would slide off the sphere, but as the bubble burst a huge jet or column of high-velocity water would slam onto the ship and in a matter of seconds drive it down into the murky depths.

Recent surveys in the North Sea region have identified sunken vessels that are very near previous methane venting/eruption sites. What a methane bubble would actually look like, however, as it roars from the ocean depths breaking onto the surface of the sea no one knows.

Anyone who has experienced the phenomenon first-hand is dead. Even if you were on one of the modern Ferretti yachts for sale you would be in serious danger during this phenomenon. While sailing your boat or yacht it would be best to avoid this area of the sea.

The fact that it is also one of the most transited areas in the world may have something to do with it.

EDUARD MEIER - THE TRUE PROPHET March 26, 2017 6:02 pm (Pacific time)

Generally the average human beings on the good Mother Earth do not know what monstrous damage they cause to nature and the planet itself with their overpopulation, because they are fooled and deceived by those responsible for the world, indeed by the governors and the scientists. So the majority of Earth humanity also knows nothing about how climatic warming has very much worse and more monstrous catastrophic results for the Earth, its nature and for all life, than the persons in charge officially announce through inadequate information. In regard to that, one just thinks of the gigantic masses of permafrost, which contain monstrous amounts of methane gas, which is released through the thawing and melting of the permafrost and is released into the atmosphere. Not only is the climatic catastrophe thereby furthered more than ever, but also still many other monstrous things occur through which life on Earth is put into question. The monstrous masses of methane gas can far exceed the great amounts of CO2 and thereby, more than ever, destroy everything. Also, as a result of all that, the oceans, their currents and their formation of waves, are monstrously and dangerously influenced and evoke increased numbers of monster waves, that is to say, gigantic waves, respectively, mega waves. This occurs along with the atmosphere being influenced in terrible ways, especially, however, its lowest layer; therefore the troposphere, in which the weather processes take place. Thereby storms of all kinds as well as thunderstorms become more and more powerful and destructive and they more and more closely resemble weather processes which once prevailed on the Earth in primeval times. The weather processes and storms which are evoked by the masses of methane gas also evoke monstrous movements of the ocean waters, whereby warm masses of water move right down to the floor of the ocean and churn it up. In this way the gigantic amounts of methane gas, which are stored in the ocean floor, are released and drift upward, where they are then swirled around in the troposphere and reach into the upper layer of the atmosphere.

I just want to know that can birds fly over Bermuda Triangle If yes, I read that birds can fly over Bermuda but if there is a high gravity than the irds should also go down are birds attracted by magnetic force

BZ February 25, 2016 8:41 am (Pacific time)

Triangle anomalies probably caused by a confluence of events: Methane bubbles driving wind vortices. The EM anomalies caused by the bubbles blowing up and out SPION saturated silica dust on the bottom of the ocean. I would also add that the Earth's magnetic field, being affected and driven by solar and other stellar charged particle winds, cause a flux at the same location, perhaps even igniting the methane bubble burst. The SPION saturated silica, being driven up in the wind vortex, would also be a yellowish cloud.

that"s great to solved the mysterious triangle .............. i

Sampath Ravi January 25, 2016 7:08 am (Pacific time)

OK good. I concluded that the two Scientists are experimented in a computer lab and not in a bermuda sea. I think all ships and planes are not destroyed and dumped under the sea. there is no evidence to prove the same. And also the singapore airlines has been disappeared in the bay of bengal. Who will find the airoplane. All peoples are not died and they are alive. The are all shipped in to other time travel (it is possible in future or before).

Anonymous January 24, 2016 11:24 pm (Pacific time)

why cant u scientist use plastic ships to survey the area coz ASA can not say it does not recognize the area when many people perish at the area ,or they hve to send those aliens to bring as the information, or automaticaly send the researcher to the area

I am giving my own research theory which will surely become popular and will help in the official research for Bermuda triangle. The theory is that Bermuda triangle is a triangle which has at least some relations with the pyramids of Egypt and in this triangle the time is very fast due to some reason which causes the compass to fail

leekhum mossang March 7, 2015 9:24 pm (Pacific time)

I think that it is cause due to the magnetic field present in ocean..that why plane get disappear...or alien can hijack.

Trig Enterprises February 23, 2015 9:51 am (Pacific time)

There are measurable magnetic fields in the Bermuda Triangle and other areas of the world that wreak havoc on instruments, and can even cause spontaneous weather. These magnetic waves are not constant, and wax and wane with the magma flow under the crust. When pushed upwards, they can generate lateral EM waves that interact with the magnetic field of the Earth above them, causing resonance magnetic waveforms and EM 'noise' that disrupts electrical systems. We have found a solution for all planes and vessels to overcome these forces with an invention called Phaseback. Phaseback is an EMTVSS already in use by the government and industries around the USA and has proved itself in the field for the last 12 years. Able to filter all noise from both AC and DC circuits, they now make an Avionics version that can protect aircraft from errant EM pulses, fields and power surges. Lightning, static buildup, even ground faults are no match for Phaseback. We even have a version for orbiting satellites, to protect them from Solar Flares! See more at www.trigenterprises.us

Josh February 18, 2015 3:49 am (Pacific time)

Though scientifically this theory is stable bt still deceptions r possible nd one cnt tell it can be coz of magnetic rocks due to a victious reaction pull the metallic things towards itself as no one has ever escaped out alive frm bermuda triangle its a hugee Mystery bt I would say magnetic rocks...... Bt I sure can say this theory can be true as of a fantasy

David Ucheg. December 28, 2014 10:15 am (Pacific time)

To my own understanding,Bermuda triangle is a connection from earth to space caused by the fall of asteriod or meteorite into the sea within that area creating a force that engulf and send to space any metallic object at different intervals

Huntger June 29, 2014 12:44 am (Pacific time)

So you are saying that hundreds of ships every year randomly sail right smack dab into the middle of a vocanic eruption? The tringle is a big place, the chance of sailing over a volcanic bubble at the exact time its breaking the surface, even a mile wide bubble, is exponentially smaller than the chance of getting struck by lightning. You are telling me that every month multiple ships and win the lottery by sailing\flying into a random tiny area at the exact time its releasing a bubble? Are we so desprate to keep our faith in "science can explain all" that we turn to theory that states: "Oh hey this is a thing that could happen" but fail to acknowlage the rest of the sentence: "once in a million years."

Mochik March 22, 2014 12:31 am (Pacific time)

Nice reading info different version of solving mystery.. My understanding simply, when a matter wind, water, sand rocks, etc.. move differently / oppositely on orchestrate way, when each different forces hit each other, there's a common point area/place that it will be on equilibrium, in a clock pendulum there should be a stop, creating imbalance, creating another cycle movement.. in short thats how Bermuda and unusual uncommon thing happens.. Human intellect in nature tend to measure Creator's creation, even in start of Bible, Genesis, fall of man, serpent promise a knowledge.. but now creates chaos rather create harmony..

Hamza Mohsin March 20, 2014 10:32 pm (Pacific time)

Every thing dissapears on passing through that trigangle Because, there are some rays precent in the bermuda triangle which travels with the speed of light and destroy every thing less then in a minute.... For details contact me 03354900583

malachi March 6, 2014 10:31 am (Pacific time)

It's a nice theory, but there will have to be a huge methane bubble to affect planes at that magnitude. The pressure and the gas concentration of the methane bubble would begin to dissipate as soon as it leaves the water surface... and that's a lot of distance between the surface of the ocean and the plane's flying altitude. It could still be possible after you plug in the equations, but my rationality says a bit unlikely. I think it's very possible for the ship counterparts, however.

Anonymous February 23, 2014 5:45 pm (Pacific time)

Ibelieve that we should solve this mystery we should send a robot or some type of water proof camera and we should have a rope so we can pull itback to us when we lookse signal of where exactly it is

eve February 23, 2014 5:30 pm (Pacific time)

why dont you send a robot with a camera.the robot being water proof and why cant you tie it with a rope and when u loose where it is yiou pukll it back

i think .. the bermuda triangle contains very high part of moon gravity. that disasters are natural. in this area most of the time high amount of moon gravity that,s causing the all magnetic chips etc were not work together and all the ships and planes..........???

royalprinceofvegas875@gmail.com September 27, 2013 11:15 am (Pacific time)

good evening everybody my self is royalprince of vegas, my profession is (medico scientist, research and development in pharmaceutical analysis) I had seen many research on bermuda triangle but im not agree no magnetic force,no sink hole,no aliens. according to me the exert pressure of atlantic ocean is double the space between the sky and atlantic ocean. atlantic ocean lie between pacific ocean on one hand north america on other hand europe and africa despite of this fact everyocean has its own depth with great pressure exactly the atlantic ocean has its depth in bermuda in the form of bermuda triangle this triangle has its own power with double pressure maximum engulf pressure is 56,00,000 tons at a time above this weight no chance of engulfing any plane or ships .GRAVITATIONAL FORCE OF WATER IN BERMUDA TRIANGLE IS INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO THE ENGULFING FORCE OF METAL" ex aluminium, iron, steel ..only one way to escape from bermuda triangle is use plastic boats

matt August 13, 2013 12:48 pm (Pacific time)

wrong

Ethan August 1, 2013 11:18 am (Pacific time)

I can't stand when I see all these people saying "thank you scientists I didn't know what it was." Idiots

Ethan August 1, 2013 11:16 am (Pacific time)

The disappearance of ships and/or airplanes in the Bermuda Triangle is most likely due to some strong electromagnetic force that makes the ship's/airplane's comtrols go awry due to the triangle's location on the earth, in my opinion. But who is to say there couldn't be a secret or remote island in the midst of the triangle for the leaders of the NWO to escape to once their actions are committed? There are a bunch of devious people in this world, and a lot of them lie.

dextor April 10, 2013 1:02 pm (Pacific time)

ANONYMOUS IS MY NAME January 12, 2013 2:09 pm (Pacific time)

AWESOME

connor January 4, 2013 7:46 am (Pacific time)

surely the methane bubbles of great pressure would disband to atmospheric pressure after leaving the sea being that there is no container for this pressure to be held the theory that the methane can go up unmixed with air in a pure form and causes planes to crash is more of a mystery than we started with, and plus how does the methane only seem to be given off when theres a ship or plane there, many of the disappearance and crashes based around this area were due to the electromagnetic interference causing planes navigation to go horribly wrong, so methane now has electromagnetic properties? most the crashes were found in the marsh lands located near the triangle, how can a computer show real life interactions, computers show you what you put into them so a computer animation created by scientist believing this theory will show the finding they want, i want to see theses self contained ever expanding gas bubbles of extreme density because tbh if we can keep methane in pressure like you say then theres a whole new fuel source of super density, just an opinion though you could be right

Uh Me.. December 30, 2012 1:47 pm (Pacific time)

So, if that's the TRUE case, the "Triangle suffering from flatulence", and some scientist figured that out, then we should hear no more about the disappearance of ships or planes. If we can predict an answer, we can predict a solution. So let us predict when these bouts of "gas" are bound to happen, and alert a plane or ship in the path to change routes...?

According to scientists bermuda triangle mystery s bcoz Natural gas— methane gas in water heats ovens and boils water— this leads 2 mysterious disappearances of ship and air craft. But i have a doubt.... how could be methane gas spread only to a trianglular a region in the ocean.!!!

What theory accounts for the ships found intact and unscathed yet without a crew? I understand you mention the crew suffocating due to the methane displacing oxygen, but where are the bodies of the missing crews and what could methane possibly have to do with their disappearance?

If this Methane Gas Theory to be believed, -why does all the magnetic compass show error whegle. n reaches bermuda triangle. -how come that the ship reachs on shore with no human crew trace on it. -an aircraft flying at high altitude, even if comes under methane attack, may for some time gets of track, but by the time it pass the triangle can regain its momentum and balance.

This is the way to heaven, or way to another world.

Bermuda December 18, 2011 10:55 am (Pacific time)

i think this is due to magnetic stones found under the sea with the combination of natural gas .

EmoGothChick December 15, 2011 7:13 am (Pacific time)

i think that magnetic stones on the ocean floor are the cause of the problem, not natural gas.

I think the Bermuda devil triangle phenomenon is the change of magnetic field effects. Is the solar storm of charged particles through the two poles of the earth to the equatorial current transportation process occurred. In polar near and close to the equator of the Central American isthmus made two field validation. 我认为百幕大魔鬼三角现象是磁场变化的后果.是太阳磁暴的带电粒子经由地球两极向赤道面电流输送过程中发生的.需要在极圈附近和接近赤道的美洲地峡做两个实地验证.

I don't agree with this Science theory. There are so many things existing on this Planet which cannot be scientifically proven and are beyond Science. This all Scientist are aware of. I appreciate the efforts of Researcher Ivan T. Sanderson. This Triangle can be a good location of Global Junk and they earn out of it.

"k this is clearly not true... only because christopher columbus, Charles Lindbergh and Bruce Gernon have all experienced the bermuda triangle's paranormal activities.. and as i recall they servived ... several ships and planes have crossed this area and survived... methan gas does not explain the air-crafts disappearing? it doesn't explain why half the ships reappeared without the crew being on it, it may be true that this region has large deposits of methan gas but then there are areas with much larger deposits (Carolina coast)and no near accidents happen out there ?explain that ?" @Student What happened with Columbus was easily explained (google it) The 2 other "incidents" probably have reasonable explanations. If there was paranormal activity in the Bermuda Triangle I'm pretty sure 1-2 people wouldn't be the only ones to know about it. And it's hardly liked they needed to survive because Bruce Gernon Experienced Time/space travel and Columbus experienced a fire ball(which was probably an Indian fire) and some lights. Not extraterrestrial activity or something of the sorts. They were never in any real danger from something that wasn't natural ie. Methane bubbles.

haqNawaz khan February 10, 2011 2:47 am (Pacific time)

its interesting but there are many points which can be discussed

Rahul February 2, 2011 12:36 am (Pacific time)

Hey folks! After scratching the head with physics, geography, oceanography, etc.. I can pin point some of the opinions behind the mystery of Bermuda Triangle. First of all,Bermuda Triangle is not a mysterious one, as convinced by a lot of people by their own facts and rumors. The reason for the disappearance of ships or planes is not because of aliens or any other super-natural powers. If there are so many ship wrecks and plane crashes, they would have been definitely some evidence to prove them. There are no pieces of planes/ships recovered, neither the black box found for any of those planes crashed.Sudden disappearance is a myth. Scientifically, Bermuda is situated very close to tectonic plates near the atlantic ocean. There are few under-water volcanoes near Bermuda as well. I should also mention that Bermuda is just an island made of limestone. The soil is not so thicker anywhere around the island. Bermuda sea waters are covered with strong coral reefs which boasts as a place for a lot of aqua- organisms. These organisms have learned to live there probably for millions of years and cannot survive if there is a magnetic pole disruption. (Hope you all know that aqua-species and birds use the magnetic pole for their directions in case of migrating to other areas or countries). The underlying fact here might be that the tectonic plates collided each other making a deep cut in the earth's surface thereby allowing volcanic lava or liquidous rocks from earth's crust to come upwards and reach the sea bed. This can sometimes create a lot of thrust in the sea water which can cause erratic waves without any notice. The ships can easily get caught in between the waves or extreme pressurised gas/thrust which comes from underwater. Adding more to this, anything that goes under this ocean could never be seen because of the coral reefs spread all over making it difficult to search. The planes may probably crash just because the limestone mixes with the sea water and exactly looks like a white island instead of ocean. For whatsoever reason, if the compass fails and if the pilots' need to take action, they might look at this whitish yellow colored island and trying to land their planes on these areas not knowing that it is actually sea water. By the time they go to a lower altitude and find that its the color of the ocean, but not any mainland, they would have already started sinking deep into the ocean. So sending a distress signal is almost impossible. The slightly molten sea bed has lesser density and can easily intake anything that sinks into it. A blackbox can be left undiscovered only if the beacon signal is not transmittable, i.e., when the device had been buried deep enough into something and closed out completely like lava covering the device and then cools down to a rock. Also I would like to inform that for years together, lots of ships have sailed safely in the same route without any modern technology. Lot more to think.... May be asking the fishermen in Bermuda how they make their livelihood successfully may disclose more clues on this.

Well, these guys are late. Hasn't the theory of methane burps already suggested by pretty much everyone already everywhere years ago?

Karthik August 24, 2010 8:58 pm (Pacific time)

The Thing is nobody got out of that place alive. And u r saying that There might be a gas which has the property to burst out and can take over mighty ships and planes at a higher altitude ranging from 15 to 20 k.ft.....I think you didn't give the needed explanation.

KB August 24, 2010 8:46 am (Pacific time)

Ummm, I think the title of this article should be "How Brilliant Computer Scientists Proved One Long Standing Theory About the Bermuda Triangle to be Correct" This doesn't account for ANY of the multitude of magnetic and atmospheric anomalies in the region. Methane gas disperses within 1,000 ft altitude, so it's not taking out aircraft at 20k ft. Sorry folks, try again...

Ocean farts, knocking planes from the sky? I dont believe it.

Alkeilani August 13, 2010 1:38 am (Pacific time)

About the electrical and magnetic disturbances I have just sent an explanation to the newsroom of salem-news.com I hope that this would solve the Bermuda triangle mystery ,and it is up to salem-news.com to choose when to publish it. Hope you enjoy it .

MTHellfire August 12, 2010 9:35 am (Pacific time)

This article was published in the AJP in 2003 and you are just now reporting it? How convenient to have left out it's initial publication date. Bad journalism to the core.

Hopefloats August 12, 2010 9:00 am (Pacific time)

I can't seem to find the article in the American Journal of Physics...which month was it published in?

Maggie August 12, 2010 8:33 am (Pacific time)

This makes me wonder if the people writing this article read Christine's book regarding th Drake sisters and their special gifts. Especially the last one about the youngest sister and what happened to the big ywact anchored out in the ocean with a very mean personality with special gifts as well and what the good one did to him and his ship. Since it has been in the mode of bein g writtten it stands to reason thye either read your research first or you all did your research after reading the book. Well, I hope it does not take planes down and ships anymore but if so that bubble needs to burst how it takes.

JC August 12, 2010 3:15 am (Pacific time)

Or it could be that the same size triangle placed nearly anywhere else on earth has lost about as many ships and planes but just never received the PR.

wtd3 August 12, 2010 2:43 am (Pacific time)

The "Slave route" theory with souls crying out sounds like the best answer yet.Seek the Truth and it will set you free. Isiah 55:3 Selah

Alkeilani August 12, 2010 1:59 am (Pacific time)

I have an explanation for electrical and magnetic disturbances. It would clarify what happens to planes and compass readings. However I can not publish here as a comment . And I do not belong to an academic institute to publish it as a scientific paper. If salem-news.com agrees I can send it to be published as a separate news item. About my self I am an electronics engineer and a private researcher

thanks for the article. I heard about this as a kid but now that Im an adult I never hear about it till your article. Thank you

Nevermore August 11, 2010 6:47 pm (Pacific time)

One more thing. Ok..two more things: 1. MythBusters is a great show but they aren't infallible. I saw that episode too! Just because they couldn't sink a ship in tank doesn't prove or disprove the theory. Besides, it's not a Myth. It's a theory. Geez. 2. To all you people posting the Wikipedia link...yeah... everyone knows that Wikipedia is NEVER wrong and is ALWAYS 100% accurate. Right. Uh huh. Because that's a site put together by anyone who wants to post a page. It doesn't matter if you're Stephen Hawking, or Jim Bob Podunk, you can post a page on Super Massive Black Holes and say anything you want. Then Michio Kaku, or Sally Mae Smith, can come along and edit that information. And so on and so forth, ad nauseum. Yep... always believe your Wiki!

Nevermore August 11, 2010 6:21 pm (Pacific time)

The first time I saw this theory some years ago, I looked at my Physicist wife and said.. "So... the ocean farts and ships disappear? Do you think Poseidon has to say "excuse me" after he takes down a ship like that?" I thought she was going to fall off the couch! But seriously. Of course it's old news! Duh! It's been around a long time! This theory is just that.. A THEORY! And no it hasn't been proven false just because someone watch some show on Discovery. I saw that show to and what it said was that this was just ONE of many theories on the Triangle. And considering that there is actual footage of examples of this happening to ships, I'd say your wrong in assuming that this is false information. I've never seen footage of a plane being taking down like this but ships I have. So to all you people saying how stupid this theory is, get off it. That is why the disappearances are called a 'mystery' and why there are so many theories hoping to solve it. Because no one knows for certain what's going on out there yet. Methane bubbles are one plausible explanation for a portion, but not all, of the disappearances. It has been inaccurately claimed that the Bermuda Triangle is one of the two places on earth at which a magnetic compass points towards true north. Normally a compass will point toward magnetic north. The difference between the two is known as compass variation. The amount of variation changes by as much as 60 degrees at various locations around the World. If this compass variation or error is not compensated for, navigators can find themselves far off course and in deep trouble. Although in the past this compass variation did affect the "Bermuda Triangle" region, due to fluctuations in the Earth's magnetic field this has apparently not been the case since the nineteenth century. Personally my favorite theory is the Rouge Wave theory. That's a fun one!

Our Frank August 11, 2010 3:51 pm (Pacific time)

What about the aircraft that go missing?

auto August 11, 2010 1:29 pm (Pacific time)

"When a ship sinks, a distress alarm goes off from submersion; this has NEVER happened in the triangle." The stupid...it never ends. OFCOURSE no alarms go off. THEY CAN'T. When this happens, its like a ship suddenly sitting in mid air (there is nothing underneath it except methane gas). The ship literally falls to the bottom of the bubble and is instantly below the surface of the water. RF doesn't transmit underwater. Therefor, no one ever gets the signal. The lack of science knowledge in this country is APPALLING.

Vic August 11, 2010 1:18 pm (Pacific time)

This may sound a bit silly at first, but I think the gas theory doesn't work as well as my guess that the Bermuda Triangle is full of nearly invisible beings wielding giant mallets and fishing nets. The compass problem can easily be explained. When the iron heads of mallets hit enough metal ships and planes, they become magnetized, and everybody understands how this can disrupt a compass.

Me August 11, 2010 9:27 am (Pacific time)

Get some people to sit just outside of the "triangle" and some to sit inside of it and wait and watch, I am sure people will see exactly what happens and then we have no more doubts etc. I have no idea what happens and would never claim to know but at least if it is visual then it MIGHT stop tongues continuesly wagging about it.

paul August 11, 2010 8:55 am (Pacific time)

Look, the area has been a hotbed for mystery for centuries. Yes, there is methane, so what? When a ship sinks, a distress alarm goes off from submersion; this has NEVER happened in the triangle. I lived in Bermuda for 12 years; residents know all about it: lights are seen coming in and out of the water, reports are filed over strange compass readings, and instruments fail in the region routinely. It has nothing to do with methane. This is a disinformation ploy just like the two geezers--Doug and Dave--who did every crop circle ever created. Get real!

TP August 11, 2010 5:09 am (Pacific time)

There is no mystery, methane or not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda_Triangle#Larry_Kusche

Skeptic1 August 11, 2010 2:01 am (Pacific time)

Wow. the comments here are embarrassing. Look people, READ THE ARTICLE. Of COURSE it's "old news", but if you were payign attention, which apparently you were not, it was a HYPOTHESIS when we heard about it. And to those who keep saying "doesn't explain the erroneous compasses, etc" do you realize those were all embellishments added in to the storiesof ships and planes vanishing? You have NO evidence other than "he said" to justify BELIEVING those other phenomena occured along with the vanishing. No wonder people hate science... it dispells the fantasies people want to hold on to. Truth is much less dramatic than fantasy, but profoundly more satisfying once you give up on the childish fantasies.

Brianna August 11, 2010 1:22 am (Pacific time)

The scientists may have just been revisiting this theory and testing it. I'd love to see you guys come up with a hypothesis and back it up with some actual evidence, not just something you saw in a documentary.

Anonymous August 11, 2010 12:38 am (Pacific time)

I saw them disprove this on the Discovery Channel a while ago. Sorry, try again.

Yeah, they seem to totally overlook the bizzare magnetic effects that take place, the electrical storms, various other oddities. I would think if a methane bubble "belched" up, the lightning from one of those storms would explode it. And that, would at least be detectable from satellite images. You'd think.

Dan August 11, 2010 12:07 am (Pacific time)

OMG!! This really proves oliver stone was right that the zionists control the media! This is by far the dumbest explanation ever of the bermuda triangle I have ever heard. Open your mouth America they got immense of amounts of crud to shovel off into your zombie brain

Anon and on August 10, 2010 11:19 pm (Pacific time)

1986? but it's only 1984.. eh, hang on a minute

scodal August 10, 2010 11:18 pm (Pacific time)

There are about 4 paragraphs that say the same thing over and over. It wasn't until the very last paragraph they tried to explain what this methane gas phenomenon even means. It sounds feasible but yea I'm a skeptic too at this current time.

Anonymous August 10, 2010 11:01 pm (Pacific time)

I still call aliens. Nonbelievers get tracked down and are beamed up butt-first.

TwoCents August 10, 2010 9:24 pm (Pacific time)

This is in the same league of lame explanations like the face on Mars being a natural formation. But they can't explain away the pyramids next to it. Can't CIA scientists do any better than this?

Bonnie August 10, 2010 2:30 pm (Pacific time)

Hahahaha!

And ifyou believe that, I've got a bridge...."

The laziest explanation ever. I could have come up with that, too.  Expecially, now methane gas is big in the news. That was a great idea to pick it up, and apply it to other areas sond problems.(Slap my knee)

Richard Braverman August 9, 2010 8:29 pm (Pacific time)

So when the next methane bubble rolls up on the gulf coast, suffocates the people and burns New Orleans to the ground, we can definitively say it is a natural event and has nothing to do with the BP OIL DISASTER that is covered up by the government.

Johnny Anonymous August 9, 2010 7:09 pm (Pacific time)

I dont buy it! What about all the compases and loss of radio transmissions...I dont buy it!

Robert August 10, 2010 7:35 pm (Pacific time)

Does and eruption of methane gas cause compasses to go haywire? Cause people not to recognize populated islands they are flying over? Gain or lose time? These are just a few examples of the phenomena people have reported. Besides, the gas theory isn't anything new.

Claudio August 10, 2010 6:36 pm (Pacific time)

Why don't we just keep a bunch of floating pilot lights on buoys all the time to burn off the methane?

Claudio August 10, 2010 6:34 pm (Pacific time)

Why don't we just keep a bunch of floating pilot lights on buoys all the time to burn off the methane?

Anonymous August 10, 2010 6:32 pm (Pacific time)

The Bermuda Triangle is Percy Jackson's The Sea of Monsters. Your argument is invalid.

Julia August 10, 2010 5:43 pm (Pacific time)

Hey Lynn D, this whole methane deal is a FACT, unlike the "stories" you've heard.

Jerry G. August 10, 2010 5:20 pm (Pacific time)

The methane theory has been presented some time before. It does not explain how compasses go off their proper reading, how the clocks on board loose or gain large amounts of time, how some ships and aircraft disappeared to never be found again, how all occupants of some ships mysteriously disappeared, and yet everything else was left intact, or how airplane pilots were seeing islands and land masses that never existed. There are many more questions that cannot be explained!

hp August 10, 2010 4:05 pm (Pacific time)

I saw some German dudes demonstrate the methane geode solution at least ten years ago.

Lynn D. August 10, 2010 3:54 pm (Pacific time)

But this theory doesn't explain the ships that were found fully in tact with no signs of any type of disturbance, half eaten meals still on plates, etc. but NO PEOPLE ANYWHERE. Sorry by methane can't do that. It also doesn't explain the stories of pilots who entered funnel shaped clouds over the Bermuda triangle at least 200 miles from Miami and when they emerged from the funnel shaped cloud only 30 minutes later, THEY WERE IN MIAMI. Methane can't do that either. Sorry I don't buy it.

Connor Wolfe August 10, 2010 3:37 pm (Pacific time)

This was brilliant. When it was discovered almost 30 years ago

Uhhh, sure, yeah methane. No freakin way, man. I watched a show that argued this point and they had a hard time sinking a model boat in a big tank with lots of methane. No way man.

GooGoo August 10, 2010 10:33 am (Pacific time)

I heard once a team of scientist all farted at one time after eating taco bell and the buildings windows blew out as they lost internet and by law digital tv signal. A couple of scientist reported fillings in their teeth turned to gold and ones wearing penny loafers began to smoke. Thank the stars for scientist.

a lot of sea traffic plus bad weather explains it 99%. The rest is speculation. I sailed for years thru the area on tankers and merchant ships and never saw anything except bad thunderstorms and brief hf radio blackouts. BTW-my home is in Salem,NH.

Richard Burgeson August 10, 2010 8:25 am (Pacific time)

We should just ignore the previous solution that the underwater floor structure causes giant rouge waves then? How many times are they going to solve this and get a different answer? I read a book written by an exorcist priest that said the reason for the problems in the Bermuda Triangle is that it used to be a route used for the slave trade and before they reached shore it any were sick they would just throw them overboard to drown and die. Many masses will be needed for the souls of the slaves.

Seems it would not be possible to put one or more stationary buoys with methane monitoring and logging electronics on them to see if there are any bursts of methane over a long term period. In my humble opinion this just remains a plausible theory until there is some more definitive proof.

Most importantly they HAVE NOT FOUND THE SHIPS OR THE PLANES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN. Now how do these goofs explain that? Oh my good god. trev August 9, 2010 10:41 pm (Pacific time)

I remember seeing a discovery channel thing on this like 15 years ago. Skiers use this same concept to make bubble pools to land in at the end of a practice ramp. And yes the sea bed was littered with wrecks, this is realy old news!

Duh August 9, 2010 10:36 pm (Pacific time)

Yep, I've known this for at least twenty years.... after I saw an old demonstration of how massive quantities of methane was frozen in sand along the bottom of the ocean. The frozen pockets of methane would often be on a mountainous ledge. When the ledge would give way due to erosion or seismic activity, the methane would be released. A large swimming pool was used to demonstrate that with massive amounts of methane released (gas pipes placed on the bottom of pool with a model ship floating on surface), no ships (or planes in the air above) could stay afloat/aloft. Simple physics, no mystery. Same as the arrogant assholes from MIT who claimed to have invented transferring electricity via wireless electronics. Nice try losers, Nikola Tesla did this in 1895. "Their is a sucker born every minute." P.T. Barnum

Jason August 9, 2010 10:16 pm (Pacific time)

I saw the documentry years ago that showed a fish tank where a scientist flowed gas bubles from the bottm of the fish tank and the model ship sanked instantly.Though the magnetic anomaly is a mystery still. What causes compasses to spin at times in this locations? I can only think its the grid lines that ran across the planet.

DON August 9, 2010 9:53 pm (Pacific time)

very old news..this was a leading theory for the devils triangle but it was proven sevral years ago to not stand up as the final answer ..In the end this theory was tossed out ...

DON August 9, 2010 9:47 pm (Pacific time)

this statement has been around for sevral years and has been succesfully proven false as to the mystery of the devils triangle..gas is under this region but its also under 90% of the oceans ..nice try but this research was done along time ago and as i stated befor..its been proven false as to the mystery of the devils triangle..its still not solved...

R Anonymous August 9, 2010 9:24 pm (Pacific time)

The Triangle is, of course, a manufactured mystery; for details see Larry Kusche's "Bermuda Triangle Mystery: Solved". The reports of magnetic and electrical disturbances seem to be just that... reports. You put a lot of traffic through a stormy area, don't be amazed if some of it never turns up, or like Flight 19, succumbs to sheer incompetence.

David August 9, 2010 9:11 pm (Pacific time)

How about the ship that david cooperfield brought back from the triangle on one of his show?

Jeff White August 9, 2010 8:31 pm (Pacific time)

The methane explains many things and I'm glad they have this out there. It doesn't explain the weird radar readings and "magnetic" based instrument failures though.

Anonymous August 9, 2010 8:14 pm (Pacific time)

How about the ship that David Cooperfield bring backs from the triangle?

dooflotchie August 9, 2010 6:02 pm (Pacific time)

Barry Obama said: "Is there some way I can tax this?" Pfffft...I know of a really easy and efficient way you could do that, no problem. Buuuut, I won't divulge the details of that plan unless you pay me a $2M consulting fee. In cash. I've got a convenient meeting place, it's about 150 miles due east of Miami, accessible only by seaplane. Just keep flying east from the coast until you see glowing lights and lose all instrumentation. I'll be waiting there for you...promise!

Bryan Smith August 9, 2010 5:48 pm (Pacific time)

So, does methane gas gause all evidence (remains) of the ships to vanish? It certainly doesn't in the case of trapped miners, even when it ignites. I never gave much thought to this whole Bermuda triangle thing. I mean Bermuda is still there right?

Anonymous August 9, 2010 2:52 pm (Pacific time)

There is no Bermuda Triangle mystery, it's all hokum designed so third-rate writers can sell books to stupid people. A quick visit to wikipedia summarizes that "Documented evidence indicates that a significant percentage of the incidents were inaccurately reported or embellished by later authors, and numerous official agencies have stated that the number and nature of disappearances in the region is similar to that in any other area of ocean."

Editor: Hey smart ass, it sure got your attention didn't it?  To those leaving comments, give them some reason for existence eh?  These are approved by living people and we don't like berating senseless rants.

Enzo August 9, 2010 1:37 pm (Pacific time)

Methane causes compasses to point in the wrong direction too? Riiight.

James Randi August 9, 2010 12:40 pm (Pacific time)

Astonishing... These "scientists" spent a good part of their lives investigating a mystery that was never there in the first place. In my book "Flim-Flam" I covered the Berlitz fraud in detail. There just is no mystery, many of the missing planes have been found, and Berlitz simply invented the radio conversations and much of the confusion... Proven again: people will believe anything if it's attractive enough, and the media will promote it if it brings in sponsors...

Fernando August 9, 2010 12:03 pm (Pacific time)

I've watched a documentary some years ago about this theory. It was a geologist who explained everything very well. The loss of radio communications, magnetic compass, the missing debries, etc, etc... All has a very logical explanation, all those events lead, or may lead, to the next stage, just like domino falling pieces. No UFO's or esoterical mambo jambo behind it. I wish I could find that documentary somewhere to watch it again. Cheers :)

mstakenforafool August 9, 2010 10:40 am (Pacific time)

I still think it's the aliens... ba ha ha ha ha!

manos August 9, 2010 10:16 am (Pacific time)

NOT new... This happens to many places. What about the electromagnetic phenomena ?

kostas August 9, 2010 10:11 am (Pacific time)

no one though of testing this simple theory?

Rosario August 9, 2010 8:22 am (Pacific time)

absolutly admiring.............

Jim August 9, 2010 6:53 am (Pacific time)

Does Methane also prevent the passage of radio signals? Planes go down all the time, but none like in the triangle... Radio communication is often lost or intermittent, the black box devices are rarely found, etc... I don't believe in the super natural, but I'm not sure methane is culprit. It seems to me like a fairly large phenomenon to have gone unnoticed this long. I mean, we can detect the tiniest gass emission from the worlds smallest volcanoes, and the sea floor is farting, and we missed it all this time? I'm not convinced.

Isaac August 9, 2010 5:34 am (Pacific time)

Methane does not and would not appear as a giant bubble. It works like this : Methane stays diffused in water, it is 100% water soluble. When there is a large amount of gas in the water the density changes. Simple physics, and highly probable.

Shannon August 9, 2010 5:06 am (Pacific time)

Seems to me like a. they haven't really thought it through because it doesn't explain the loss of mechanicals at the same moment or the loss of communications, and b. where are all the wreckages on the bottom of the ocean floor then. Well they did say it was only a hypothesis. So again it is not solved at all.

Dev August 9, 2010 1:37 am (Pacific time)

all the doubters are invited to a free boat cruise through the bermuda triangle for 2 months. Have fun!

OldNews August 8, 2010 10:54 pm (Pacific time)

Like another poster said, this is an old theory. Big problem: the supposed giant methane bubbles have never been observed, and so if they actually occur, their real effects are completely unknown. And like yet another poster noted, it has been demonstrated that the loss of ships and planes in the "Bermuda Triangle" is comparable to any other well-traveled area in the world.

Brenton August 8, 2010 6:45 pm (Pacific time)

If X number of ships have been caught in these methane bubbles and sunk, you'd think X + N number of ships would have been in close enough proximity to observe such a phenomenon without sinking, and report it. Yet as far as I know, there have been 0 reports of such phenomenon. So since X + N = 0, X = 0 as well. (Clarification: "X + N" could be thought of instead as simply Y, where Y is greater than X.)

Craig August 8, 2010 6:28 pm (Pacific time)

I'd like to remind people that methane is a colorless gas, so eyes can't see the incoming bubble.

Anonymous August 8, 2010 6:23 pm (Pacific time)

sammyo41 August 8, 2010 3:30 pm (Pacific time)

There should be all kinds of evidence within the triangle and on the ocean floor..

TDEngines August 8, 2010 3:28 pm (Pacific time)

The reporter should have done a bit of research. I saw a documentary about this several years ago. They did tests with a model ship in a tub lined with air hoses to make bubbles. They also talked an oil rig that was destroyed "in minutes" by methane from the sea floor.

OldNews August 8, 2010 3:07 pm (Pacific time)

This is old news. The thing to consider about the Bermuda Triangle is that because all of the disturbances over the years are - just that - over the years, there's no way to prove a damn thing. We can't make a theory, and accurately test it on unknown conditions that vary from one account to the next. There are some things man cannot explain, and I believe this to be one of them.

NoAnon August 8, 2010 2:50 pm (Pacific time)

It doesn't explain the electricity loss either.

JHankwitz August 8, 2010 2:42 pm (Pacific time)

Gee, could it be that there's a heck of a lot more small aircraft (prone to crashing) flying in that area? Why does everyone want to ignore the obvious?

Barry Obama August 8, 2010 1:28 pm (Pacific time)

Is there some way I can tax this?

a non eMouse August 8, 2010 2:57 am (Pacific time)

Easy way to test this. Fly an unmanned aircraft through the area for a few months with chemical sensors to detect what's going on if it suddenly crashes. Similar idea for the boats.

Anonymous August 8, 2010 12:49 pm (Pacific time)

"If the bubbles are big enough and possess a high enough density they can also knock aircraft out of the sky with little or no warning" So basically you're telling us that the earth just farted them away... This article is worthless.

Unimportant August 8, 2010 12:44 pm (Pacific time)

Can you post a link to the paper? I was unable to find it searching through the American Journal of Physics online database. The explanation seems plausible but fails to cover the abnormalities found in navigational equipment.

Gonzobot August 8, 2010 11:21 am (Pacific time)

That'd be downright terrifying. To be flying, see a bubble, and then the f*cking AIR stops working? Crazy. That's enough evidence for me to not travel around there.

ObviousGuy August 8, 2010 10:21 am (Pacific time)

This theory would explain much of the Bermuda Triangles legendary phenomenon. BUT what about the common reports of electrical and magnetic disturbances. I'm not a professional here but I'm pretty sure that neither magnets or electronics are affected by gasses...

ANon August 8, 2010 6:23 am (Pacific time)

Absurd... If this was true then the phenomenon would atleast occur once on film at a distance. To say that the hundreds of transportation vehicles gone missing in this area is due to trapped methane is just ridiculous. Does it just so happen that planes and ships happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time every time this happens?

Nfinit August 8, 2010 5:52 am (Pacific time)

When you take the sheer amount of seatraffic volume into account there is no evidence that any more ships "disappear" inside the fluctuating boundaries of the Bermuda Triangle than any other arbitrarily placed triangle, circle, dodecahedron or rhombus placed onto the globe. Funny how the advent of proper tracking and monitoring from standardized GPS made virtually all of these mysterious disappearances themselves vanish.

EMotala August 8, 2010 5:00 am (Pacific time)

This explanation is acceptable but what about the fact that magnetic fields go haywire near the Bermuda Triangle?

nedmorlef August 8, 2010 1:38 am (Pacific time)

it's a giant sea monster that eats ships and planes then farts.

Bryan August 7, 2010 8:49 pm (Pacific time)

So where are all the downed planes and ships that should be sitting at the bottom of the ocean?? Anybody, Bueller, Bueller.....

Anonymous August 7, 2010 8:10 pm (Pacific time)

sounds OK to me

Kerberos August 7, 2010 4:02 pm (Pacific time)

@me If they sent a submarine to look at the Triangle, and the Methane Gas theory was correct..The submarine would sink to the bottom and be stuck there.

hfadsjk August 7, 2010 7:25 pm (Pacific time)

uhh, examine the seabead? probably not the best idea if this theory is true

Olgen Ifti August 7, 2010 5:42 pm (Pacific time)

Interesting!

Mr. Mysterio August 7, 2010 4:46 pm (Pacific time)

1. no methane hydrates 5 miles off Miami, where several ships and planes disappeared in daylight! 2. No planes/ships? Methane explosions could be the reason... 3. All the theories are fascinating...

brian August 7, 2010 2:28 pm (Pacific time)

Just ignore that fact that just about EVERY hurricane that forms on the Atlantic comes through the triangle. Many never hit land. Before satellites, we didn't even know they were there.

Darby August 7, 2010 1:48 pm (Pacific time)

This is a bunch of crap. The Bermuda Triangle has no mysterious disappearances and no more wrecks of any sort than any other area of the ocean. The whole idea of the Bermuda Triangle as mysterious in any way is a complete and total hoax

John August 7, 2010 1:35 pm (Pacific time)

I remember having a discussion about this with my history teacher in about 6th grade...so yeah, old theory easily.

Michael August 7, 2010 9:12 am (Pacific time)

this has been hypothesized for quite some time. It was even part of the plot of an adventure novel by Jack DuBrul.

me August 7, 2010 8:36 am (Pacific time)

Someone should examine the sea bed under the Bermuda Triangle. If there's any truth in the claims the sea bed there would be full of all the disappeared ships and planes. Has anyone done this? If they have what did they find?

Anonymous August 7, 2010 8:01 am (Pacific time)

Old news. I heard of this theory in 1986
