(SALEM, Ore.) - Mogens Lykketoft, Danish politician and also General Assembly chief met with Palestinian officials on a visit to the region last year but was accused of refusing to meet with Israeli officials. In June 2015, Mogens Lykketoft was elected President of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly. The Danish politician, incoming General Assembly chief Mogens Lykketoft, was criticized by Media in Tel Aviv for meeting only with Palestinian officials during visit to region last year. In February 2014, he was set to meet with Israeli officials but due to his previous anti-Israeli remarks regarding Israel's responsibility for armed conflicts, terrorism, extremism, development of nuclear weapons and growing tensions in the region, Israeli officials refused to meet with him. It is worth mentioning that Lykketoft in an interview last year with a newspaper had said: "Ariel Sharon, former Israeli Prime Minister was a wild military leader who had no interest in reaching agreements with the Palestinians." Lykketoft was known as a skilled negotiator but has been faulted for lacking charisma and Danish media have portrayed him as a shrewdly calculating politician. Lykketoft, who will start his year-long presidency in September, said recently that he intends to bring together world leaders to the annual meeting to focus on ways of achieving peace, security and human rights. Lykketoft was the unanimous choice of European and other Western nations. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this anniversary year offers an extraordinary opportunity to shape history. _________________________________________
