Salem Police Arrest 13-Year Old for Murder of Infant

Rosita Carbajal will most likely be arraigned sometime today at the Marion County Juvenile Court.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police detictives arrested a 13-year-old last night, for the murder of her 16 month-old niece.

Courtland Geyer with the Marion County District Attorney's Office says relatives brought the small child, Ruby Navarro-Carbajal, to the Salem Hospital. Ruby was not breathing and was later pronounced dead.

Geyer says Dr. Cliff Nelson of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy of the child Monday.

"While the official cause of death is still pending, authorities believe the child died from inflicted traumatic brain injury."

The death investigation determined that the child was staying with relatives living at 820 Norman Avenue NE, Salem, Oregon, on Saturday night.

Accoring to Geyer, the relatives – including the child's maternal grandfather and aunt, 13-year old Rosita Carbajal – were watching the child for the evening.

"The child's mother was not at the residence. Subsequent investigation determined that Rosita Carbajal caused the child's death," Geyer said.

Last night, Salem Police detectives arrested her for murder and lodged her at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center at 3030 Center St NE, Salem. Rosita Carbajal will most likely be arraigned sometime today at the Marion County Juvenile Court.

A 13-year-old girl should know better than to shake a baby. Regardless of whether or not the mother was their she is NOT to blame. There were adults present at the home and if Rosita needed assistance, it was there. Picking up the baby, shaking it and "accidently" throwing it into a book case is in no way logical. She clearly has serious issues and the fact that she's out, now, makes us all less safe. I leave my brother in charge of my 4-month old for small periods of time and know he would NEVER hurt my son.

Just because she was nice to certain people does NOT mean that she WOULDN'T hurt a child. Sometimes things happen, people "snap" or just pretend to be 2 different people. People also do stupid things when frustrated or angry. I'm not sure whether she did it or not but a 13 year old should have never been in charge of baby sitting anyone let alone a toddler. I feel horrible for the family for both of their losses but actions come with consequences.

She is a sweet girl who feels so bad for what happened but it was an accident I was in the same facility she was for a short time and she does have some issues with anger but she did not do this on purpose. I was he peer mentor and she talked to me often I know in my heart this littlw girl did not do this on purpose.
