(EUGENE, Ore.) - The city of Eugene, Oregon has done something that few cities so far have had the courage to do; Eugene is commemorating Oregon's Medical Marijuana Program during a special week-long observance. Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy put forth a proclamation that minces no words about the positive side of this medical herb which is being used at this time by over 22,000 Oregon residents. OFFICE OF THE MAYOR City of Eugene, Oregon PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: In November 1998, Oregon voters passed into law the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act, allowing Oregonians suffering from debilitating medical conditions to use marijuana as medicine. Currently, nearly 25,000 patients are enrolled and over 2,900 doctors have provided recommendations for patients' utilization of medical marijuana; and, WHEREAS: Thirteen states have passed laws allowing for chronically and seriously ill patients to use cannabis with the approval of their physicians; and, WHEREAS: On September 6, 1988, Drug Enforcement Administrations (DEA) own Administrative Law Judge, Francis L. Young, ruled that Marijuana, in it˙s natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known; and, WHEREAS: There are over are over 17,000 published scientific studies on the therapeutic values of cannabis and cannabinoids in the National Library of Medicine, and, there are over 2,600 patents filed for the medical use of cannabinoids in the United States Patent office; and, WHEREAS: Pre-Clinical and Clinical trials indicate that cannabinoids are useful in controlling Alzheimer˙s Disease, Cancer, Chronic Pain, Diabetes, G I Disorders, Hepatitis C, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, Pruritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Sleep Apnea; and, WHEREAS: Marijuana has a history of thousands of years of safe use without any recorded deaths attributed to its use, and, all citizens deserve to know the truth about cannabis, NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kitty Piercy, Mayor of the City of Eugene, Oregon, do hereby proclaim the Week of April 30th, 2009 to May 6th, 2009 as Medical Marijuana Awareness Week in the city of Eugene, and encourage all citizens to join in this observance. Tim, I'm not sure what SR is and i'm surely not in anyones "camp". If you don't think there are drug dealers hiding behind the medical marijuana curtain your simply not looking. I'll respond here since you felt the need to bannish my post from the other article but reference it here anyway. If you don't feel the need to print this post I completely understand, I'll simply take my news reading elsewhere. thanks for your time.

Thanks Kitty Piercy , a mayor who listens !

I don't get it. She "proclaimed" that she supports state law and everyone is giddy. News flash, medical marijuana is legal!
Editor: Everyone, meet James, he's from the SR camp I'd be willing to bet. They are upset that we exposed their alliance with police in trying to basically trash Oregon's Medical Marijuana Program which while restrictive, is probably the best and most highly functioning program for the herb in the nation. There are police out there who are unwilling to accept the word of the Oregon voter and they were able to make a friend in the medical marijuana community. They insinuate that all kinds of problems exist because of the OMMP and it is a false charge. So, if you waste your time trying to use this site for propaganda that attempts to savage this state voter authorized law, then that is your choice. It won't be showing up, so don't bother. I suggest reevaluating your position personally, because the alliance among those who oppose SR and her bizarre attempt at trying to represent the medical marijuana community while creating laws that allow police to enter a person's home to "inspect" their medicine, is very broad and encompassing.

We just need Sam Adams to do the same.

To all: Please also note that current hot topic in Eugene is trial and conviction for resisting arrest of protester, NOT for marijuana, but in same pattern as everywhere for the police action. Piercy's proclamation comes in midst of that brouhaha, and thus means just that much more to residents here, with the situation also further heated via controversy over police chief and special auditor for police affairs. Allathis somehow seems to go hand-in-hand(or club-to-face?) wherever it doth happen...

Way to go, Mayor Kitty Piercy! As a medical Cannabis patient who has suffered greatly because of Cannabis' insane medical prohibition, I am inspired by your knowledge and by your intestinal fortitude. Hopefully, more mayors (and other politicians) will gather up the courage to stand up for MEDICAL TRUTH and help guide us out of the Dark Ages.
