(MISSION HILLS, Calif.) - Jack Herer, 70-year old noted author and leader in the worldwide hemp/cannabis movement was laid to rest at 1:00 pm April 25th, at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills, CA. The ceremony was open to the public and attended by hundreds of family, friends, followers and others that wished to pay their respects to the most well-known hemp activist in the world to date. Jack began his campaign to end prohibition in the early 70's, and made a commitment to bring his vision to fruition. Jack Herer was an instrumental force in the movement to de-criminalize cannabis, and believed completely that "Hemp can save the world!" He shouted his message from the rooftops, the mountaintops, anywhere he could find an audience. Jack Herer did, in fact, change the world. He introduced the documented benefits of the age-old medicinal herb, the history of its uses going back 5,000 years and the laws that prevent people from using it. His book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, is considered the "Bible of Hemp" to thousands around the world. He was a passionate man with strong convictions, all of which were described in some detail by his son Dan Herer and others, bringing the congregation to laughter and applause many times. Here are some photos of the historical event by Dexter Phoenix. A full report including video is forthcoming. Hemp! Hemp! Hooray! What did he die from?
EDITOR: Jack had a heart attack in Sept '09 and suffered from brain anoxia, having been without oxygen too long. Seven months later he passed away (4/15/10), after a long struggle to improve. RIP, Hemperor.

Dissent is the highest form of Partiotism. WE r the majority, and it is an honor to carry the message that the time is now to stop being silent. We must continue to shout out against these crimes to humanity. We must continue what Jack did for us. We must not b afraid or fear consequence if WE peacefully fight this war together. Battles are lost but the war is won already, we MUST believe in this great cause started by our friend Jack and continue it like our friend Rick Simpson. We will never give up Jack. Still lovin you

I met Jack in Amsterdam and got to talk to him for a few minutes. He had a lot of class, but there was no arrogance about him. Humble, honest and obviously very sick at the time, but still took time to visit with everybody and believe me, everybody wanted to talk to Jack. When he went to shake my hand, I asked him for a hug and got it. The 2003 cannabis cup, if I remember correctly. I went in 1997, 2003, 2006 and 2007 and only got to talk to him just once. The money I spent on those four trips could have been spent here in the good ol USA, if it wasn't for those insane drug laws.

Jack somewhat reminds me of my father, always eager to learn and teach the truth. Jack will be an icon for sure, may April 15 always be known as Jack Herer day. I just don't understand why so many people refuse to accept the truth? why are so many people afraid of a miracle of a plant that can and with a little faith save our planet? God bless Jack and God help us all.

We would like to know why and how did you get around not getting arrested because obviously there is hemp involved in the funeral... we don't really believe that hemp cures cancer and don't like that this website encourages people to illegally grow h&*p in their homes
You have all of the credibility of our nation's outdated drug laws when you don't use a name. We use ours. Marijuana is a plant, like a rose or a big tree like the loggers fall. It was placed on this planet for a reason, and only ridiculous 1930's racism-based propaganda could make it illegal. It is so damned ridiculous that a country of 'freedom' ruins peoples's lives over a plant. There is absolutely conclusive proof of cannabis treating cancer, but since you probably don't have cancer (like my Marine brothers who are dead, and who have buried their children from cancer that came from a toxic military base called El Toro so the wealthy and snooty marijuana-fighter types like yourself could make a few bucks at our expense) I wonder, are you equally happy with us for exposing these things and constantly rallying for Veterans? You see we're honest about it all. There is not a question that we help Veterans, and that marijuana is an extremely perfect answer for many who suffer from PTSD. You would have them denied, but then maybe your heart is just black and your drug war programming is non-reversible. Of course then if your loved one was dying of cancer, then you'd be one of the many in the ranks saying, "i was so against it, I had no idea... People change, they can figure out that some people do things they don't. Marijuana has never caused a single death. Doesn't that mean anything to you? And finally, you are also lying about our encouraging people to grow marijuana illegally in their homes, you moron!

My heart jumped a fence when I heard this sad news. I hope Jack is resting peaceful knowing others still beleive in him and his cause!
Sue May 12, 2010 9:41 pm (Pacific time)
Courageous and steadfast, always with a smile, heart-felt compassion for those wronged by the insidious drug war. I was fortunate to have spoken to him on the phone a few times throughout the years, and to meet him in person and hang out with him and friends for a few days. He said to me, with earnest feeling, "No one should be in jail for pot." I couldn't have agreed more. Jack, your passion and love for humanity will be missed, but I will tell you one thing, they will shine on. Peace and happiness, brother.
Tommy Stokes May 12, 2010 12:39 pm (Pacific time)
You will be greatly missed Jack! Though I never met you, I feel you are a brother for your contributions to the well being of humanity! Your wife Jeannie, once left a comment on my Myspace page with a link to Rick Simpson's movie "Run From The Cure", and to an online version of your book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", and my thanks to her for having done so! You shall not be forgotten Jack Herer, and I'm certain you shall be eulogized in many songs to come...

I'm sadden to see this pioneer has left us with so many battles on the front line for the safety and health of the people of the world at stake. Pray for the world now that a voice that could not be silenced by the MSM and government now has the ear of the Lord.

As I was not able to attend Jack's memorial, it was lovely to watch your slide show of pictures from it. As tears flowed, I realized that this was almost like being there. Thanks so much!
