Apr-23-2012 21:02TweetFollow @OregonNews Blackout on Syrian Armed Opposition ObligationsMichael Munk Salem-News.comSyria must conform to the provisions of the negotiated cease fire agreement; opposition fighters need to be issued the same demands.
(PORTLAND, OR) - The UN Secretary General is a citizen of South Korean-- a country in a close military alliance with the US and which hosts US military bases-and he seems to regard the US as his sponsor. At the very least, his record demonstrates he is very sensitive to the urging of the US and its supporters. That’s why the media report generously when he urges Syria to conform to the provisions of the Annan –negotiated cease fire agreement but never asks why he is silent on the obligations of the US-supported armed opposition. To challenge the blackout, we should frequently refer to the provisions of the agreement that require Annan and his monitors to also confirm that opposition fighters stop "all acts of aggression against Syrian army formations, bases, convoys and infrastructure ... against government agencies, buildings, infrastructure as well as private and public properties" and "commit to stop all illegal activities ... including assassinations, kidnapping or vandalism". ______________________________
Michael Munk tries to glean important but overlooked items from the world media on the issues of the day and posts them on an irregular schedule. Although items can overlap, he also maintains separate lists for activists in Portland, Oregon and the Northwest, and special lists for: Labor, Latin America, Israel, Torture Taxis, Korea, and the Czech Republic. Sign up here to try the general list or ask to be added to one or more of the special lists. Michael is a highly praised writer from an important generation whose book, the Portland Red Guide, has received high praise. "City Commissioner Nick Fish gave me a copy. Sat down on my sofa and couldn't put it down until I finished. Fascinating!" "Whoop! Whoop! I'm impressed by how many names from Portland's past have not made it into our official histories and public memorials. Some were good friends of mine. Local history is too often overlooked. Good work, Mike." Visit the new photo gallery on Michael's website: www.michaelmunk.com Articles for April 22, 2012 | Articles for April 23, 2012 | Articles for April 24, 2012 | Quick Links
