(SALEM) - Police report that a young Salem boy who received serious head injuries in a bicycle crash Thursday, died after being transported to Salem Hospital. Salem Police Lt. Dan Deitz says eight-year old Ryan Johnson was riding on the sidewalk in front of his Salem home on Breys Avenue NE when he fell from the bicycle, striking his head on a concrete retaining wall, which is adjacent to the sidewalk. Ryan's father, Raymond Johnson, was outside watching his son ride when the tragic accident occured, Deitz said. Ryan was transported to the hospital by ambulance where he died from injuries suffered in the fall. The incident is still under investigation by the Salem Police Department. Deitz told Salem-News.com that the boy was not wearing a helmet when he crashed, but he added that because of the nature of the injuries, it would not have made a difference. Ryan Johnson was a 2nd grade student who attended Englewood Elementary School. School officials have been notified according to Deitz, and grief counselors will be available at the school for students who may need assistance. I am Ryans aunt and godmother. This is for all to know... Ryan will always be greatly loved and in our hearts. I am also responding to Beth Marshall; If you read this article no he was not wearing a helmet but if he had been it would not have saved his life... as it was his throat that was actually injured.
Norma King April 26, 2006 7:36 pm (Pacific time)
I know this family. The article has left out the fact the handlebars hit him in the throat. That is why the helmet would not have saved him. To Ray

Beth, the part about the helmet has been added. We will go into more details in another story, just trying to be sensitive toward the family during this tragic period. It certainly is an important part of the story.
Beth Marshall April 21, 2006 8:02 am (Pacific time)
Was this little boy wearing a helmet? If not, what a sad tragic way to find out that there is a bicycle helmet law for children for a reason. My prayers go out to Ryan's family at this heart breaking time.
