Scenes from 'Reefer Madness' |
(MOLALLA, Ore.) - About 1937 The U.S. Government and Hearst Newspapers produced the moving picture REEFER MADNESS which has become the most grotesque but hilarious movies ever made. It depicts caricatures of the actions of cannabis/marijuana (C/MJ) on people who use it.
If one didn’t know different one would think that it drives the user crazy and to commit all sorts of violence like rape, murder, suicide and almost any other kind of illegal or crazy stuff. Users of C/MJ almost die laughing when they see the movie.
The old Pharmacology textbooks stated the C/MJ causes euphoria and is addicting. It does produce euphoria which is a happy, tranquilized feeling but it is also one of the most useful, most used, really safe medicines which was so stated in a court hearing by Administrative Judge Francis Young from the D.E.A.(Drug Enforcement Administration).
I have written before about Reefer Madness in the police and DEA Agents on Salem-News.com and I have heard of some District Attorneys and Judges being vehemently punitive to even legal C/MJ users when hauled into their courts.
At the same time I have read of other judges who have ruled that an Oregon Medical Marijuana Card holder can use this medicine even if he is on parole or probation.
I have also heard that the U.S. Government will pay thousands of dollars of the costs of catching and/or jailing C/MJ users because after all it is still a Federal Offense.
Fourteen states and Washington D.C. have now legalized medical C/MJ in which case C/MJ is treated like any other medication. The remarkable thing here is that C/MJ is far more effective and less dangerous than Morphine-like drugs, sleeping pills, anti-depressants, tranquilizers, alcohol, tobacco and almost any drug you can name including aspirin!.
Almost all of these drugs, except marijuana, are very dangerous in the workplace and while driving. In fact, far more so than C/MJ but they are still ok on the highway or in the workplace.
Unlike almost all of the drug types mentioned, C/MJ is stored in body fat where it is inactive but will still give a positive blood or urine test weeks after its use.
Part of Reefer Madness virus infection is the thought like Chicken Little – remember him – “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”.
The fact is that brain or physical impairment for most medical users is only slight, and lasts for maybe 4 hours and 6 hours at the most. Many people use it only nightly to help them sleep, and have no adverse effects the next day. However, a blood or urine test will be positive for at least 4 weeks.
I was flabbergasted to read that the Oregon Supreme Court ruled that a person could be fired from his job even if he were using C/MJ as legal medicine.
What is really crazy, in the worst sense, is that THC, the pure chemical in C/MJ, is an FDA approved medicine called Marinol or dronabinol. However, the pills cost about $15 each. In other words the patients could be using Marinol, pure THC, which produces a similar medical effect but without the benefit of all the other cannabinoids present in the natural plant form and with far worse adverse effects, such as hallucinations, panic attacks, and paranoia than C/MJ, and shows up in blood and urine.
The patient who was fired had been using C/MJ and working safely and effectively with a drill press. The company fired him on the pretense that he was a danger to others, including Morphine and Alcohol users.
Believe me manufacturing companies, many of your employees are using drugs far more dangerous that C/MJ. And judges, you certainly know that some of your attorney colleagues and even judges use C/MJ. A magistrate in Gold Hill (?) was one of them.
