(Albany, Oregon) - Albany Parks & Recreation and Public Works/Environmental Services are partnering to offer two classes this spring to help Albany residents save money, save water, and create healthier landscaping at home. Naturescaping Your Yard: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Thursdays, April 28 – June 2, with two Saturday classes on May 21 and June 4. Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Naturescaping is gardening and garden planning that eliminates the need for expensive, synthetic fertilizers by organically improving soil fertility; putting the right plant in the right place for health and reduced maintenance; reducing the garden's summer water needs by improving the soil, recycling rainwater and using drought-tolerant plants. The class is taught by Corvallis landscape designer Beth Young. Cost is $55 for an Albany resident or $71 for someone who lives outside the Albany city limits. If two people attend the class to re-do the same yard, the prices are $75 and $91.This class is being co-sponsored by the Linn OSU Extension. Sprinkler Systems 101: 5:30-8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Stutzman Services, 4185 Spicer Drive SE. Overwatering, the most common problem in home and commercial landscaping, can double or triple water use during the summer. The class provides information about Albany water rates and its drinking water source; establishing a good environment for healthy plants; creating proper soil conditions to help save water; sprinkler systems; and water requirements for different kinds of plants. Cost $19/$25 and includes a free outdoor water conservation kit. For information or to register, contact Albany Parks & Recreation at 541-917-7777 or visit www.albanyparksandrecreation.org.
