(ROSEBURG, Ore.) - Law enforcement officials in Douglas County, Oregon have released the name of a man killed over the weekend by officers after what they describe as a standoff.

The man, identified as 46-year old Donald Eugene Lowry of Myrtle Creek, reportedly emerged from his car with a gun and was shot and killed. Six different officers fired at the man. They have not yet been identified.

It began early Sunday morning, April 13th 2008, just before 6:00 AM in the morning. The man was shot by law enforcement officers following a four hour standoff.

Police say the incident began at the Douglas County Fairgrounds at about 1:20 AM Sunday when a man who police say was armed, fled during a suspicious vehicle check by an Oregon State Police trooper.

They say the fleeing vehicle was eventually boxed in on a logging road about 4.5 miles off the end of Callahan Road, about 10 miles west of Roseburg.

Mr. Lowry, who police say was armed with a handgun, was shot by officers after four hours of negotiating. The specific details that led to the shooting are still under investigation. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is continuing their investigation into the shooting. An autopsy on Donald Lowry is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15th.

Donald Lowry's next of kin has been notified.
