Apr-14-2007 10:03TweetFollow @OregonNews Portland Firefighters Battle 3-Alarm Apartment Fire; Two Dumpster FiresSalem-News.comCombined, over 120 firefighters responded to the fires.
(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the Regency Park North apartments located at 5026 NE 31st Ave on a report of dumpster/recycle container fire at 12:45 AM. While responding to this fire, another caller reported the fire had extended to the apartment building. At 12:47 AM a 1st alarm assignment was dispatched. E14 arrived at 12:49 AM with fire on the exterior of the 2 story apartment building and extending into the attic area. A 2nd alarm was called for at 12:53 AM. As 1st alarm companies were arriving to assist E14, a bystander reported a dumpster fire involving a building at NE 28th & Alberta. The 2nd fire was confirmed by T13 and another 1st alarm assignment was sent to that location at 12:58 AM. Crews continued to fight the attic fire at the Regency Park North. All occupants were evacuated from the "U-Shaped" building. As crews were working to extinguish the fire, the SE corner of the roof collapsed into the attic. At 1:07 AM E17 (while responding on the 2nd alarm) found a 3rd fire involving a dumpster next to a building at NE 26th and Alberta. They stopped and extinguished that fire before it extended inside the building. A 3rd alarm was called for at 1:13 AM for the Regency Park North fire. Crews worked to contain the fire in the attic space. Firefighters stopped the fire from extending further west in the attic. A fire wall in the middle of the building stopped it from extending into the northern half. The fire was recalled at 1:28 AM with all 1st and 2nd alarm companies working. The 3rd alarm companies were returned. TriMet provide a bus for 13 occupants that were displaced, to get them out of the weather. Red Cross was called to assist any occupants with housing and other needs, if they could not return to their apartments. Fire investigators and fire crews will remain on scene into the morning. There were no injuries reported at this time. All 3 fires remain under investigation at this time. Investigators have not determined any value or loss figures at this time. Portland Fire & Rescue reminds everyone to call 911 to report any suspicious activity of any kind. Remember to keep combustible materials away from the exterior of your home or business. 13 Engines, 6 Trucks, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue, 1 Air Unit, 1 Rehab Unit, 5 Chiefs, 4 Investigators responded for a total of 96 fire personnel on scene.
