Snow Advisory Issued For Oregon Cascades

ODOT Reminder: Having studded tires on your vehicle is now illegal in Oregon

Salem-News.com

(GOVERNMENT CAMP) - The Northern Oregon Cascades along with the South Washington Cascades and the Cascades in Lane County have all been issued a snow advisory through tomorrow morning.

Those affected include Government Camp, Detroit, Santiam Pass, McKenzie Bridge, the Willamette Pass and Mount St. Helens.

The advisory remains in effect until 7:00 AM Saturday.

Rain will continue this morning with snow in the mountains over five-thousand feet. Steady precipitation will turn to showers on the coast this morning and inland this afternoon.

By tonight, the snow level is expected to drop to around two-thousand feet with additional snow accumulation of up to eight inches above three-thousand feet.

Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles after April 1 can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which carries a maximum $145 fine.

ODOT encourages drivers to consider other types of traction tires or chains because studded tires cause an estimated $40 million in damage each year on city streets, county roads and state highways; city, county and state budgets set aside only about $11 million to repair that damage.

Other types of traction tires are available to those who drive in Oregon`s snow zones. These traction tires meet Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in severe snow conditions and carry a special symbol on the tire sidewall showing a three-peaked mountain and snowflake.

Research shows these tires provide better traction than studded tires when used on bare pavement.
