Carpetbaggers in Sri Lanka: Traitors Terrorize Northern Tamils

Adding local perspective to the ongoing human rights struggle of Tamil people in Sri Lanka's north.

A different era and country - but Sri Lanka faces the same problem as the post-Civil War US south, where carpetbaggers took advantage of a defeated culture.

(SALEM / JAFFNA ) - Try to imagine that instead of being engaged and defeated in WWII for committing Genocide, Hitler had simply been taken to court and told he had to reexamine what he had done; with no military retaliation or punishment for the ruthless, intentional killing of human beings. Imagine Hitler being cocky, denying ethnic cleansing and then calling every accuser from world government, to national media... liars.

Welcome to Sri Lanka.

Most of those who have sold out their culture throughout history, made a conscious choice to do so. Sometimes it happens due to planned deception, intense fear is a strong factor; religious oppression is frequently key; however often it is a result of simple greed. Sri Lanka's history is one of colonization and division; failed attempts at peace and violent resistance.

A product of tense resentment from the subjugation of Sinhalese that occurred during the years of British colonialism, the government has a long-ranging plan for the Tamil Hindu and Christian culture that resembles Israel's plan for Palestinians; each of which was set into place in 1948.

Like Israel, the GoSL devised a method to eliminate human lives by the tens of thousands while the world says nothing. One of the most wicked recurring state terrorism issues facing the Tamils and their supporters, many of whom are Sinhalese, are the 'white van' disappearances.

The 'white vanning' of human beings strikes fear in the heart of all Sri Lanka Tamils and the journalists in Lanka who write on their behalf.

They abduct businessmen in front of their families, and anyone else deemed 'problematic' by the government. Sometimes they are recovered through negotiations, sometimes their bodies are dumped near their homes, tortured and mangled. Perhaps it was this one, nagging aspect of Sri Lanka's government operation that led the United States to submit its war crimes resolution against Sri Lanka in Geneva.

With regard to the Genocide, the Tamil casualty numbers from the mad ethnic cleansing pinnacle that finally ground to a conclusion in May 2009, remains a mystery. Along with the murdered people, went their records and vital statistics. Some place the number of missing and presumably dead Tamils, in excess of 160k.

The U.S. government has long supported Sri Lanka, but took an unexpected turn recently in Geneva by filing a UN Resolution against this island nation for war crimes. Now retaliation against Tamils has worsened. The Tamils are facing anger from the Lanka government which is an indirect response toward both the U.S. for filing the resolution, and India for backing it.

The following is a response to our recent article, Sri Lanka: Genocide and Poor Toilet Training. It was lodged as a comment on this story about the Northern Province governor's choice to transform the technology section of the historic Jaffna Library, into a toilet for visitors from the south.

It is about the continued peril facing Tamil people in the north of Sri Lanka. They are the survivors of a government Genocide and their suffering continues, as Sri Lanka's President Majijnda Rajapaksa and his brothers who run the government with him, develops creative methods to continue the brutality.

They are able to abuse Tamil people though their cooperation with the Sinhala Buddhist government in Colombo. This Tamil-on-Tamil warfare is a product of the Colombo war and oppression machine.

White van “disappearances for ransom” is overtly a racket milking Tamil cash cows there is also a hidden aspect. In July 1983 organized mobs consisting mainly of Sinhala – speaking hoodlums looted and destroyed Tamil businesses.

Despite that blow the resilient Tamil people have bounced back and have carved out their niche once again in Sri Lankan commerce. What is happening now is another “silent” July 1983.

The business concerns are not physically destroyed but Tamil businessmen are being systematically wiped out. Tamil owned or controlled commerce is rapidly eroding. The “enforced disappearances” of most affluent Tamils are not political or related to counter – terrorist procedures.

These are nothing but extortion related abductions. It is now an industry. The actual number of incidents are not reported to the Police or even organizations like the Civil Monitoring Commission. Many people negotiate on their own and get their loved ones released through paying a reduced sum. They later keep silent. In many cases the ransom paid is so great that continuing with business becomes impossible.

Some are forced to sell off property to collect ransom money. Also some who get released feel so insecure that they transfer their businesses to someone else and leave the country. There are also many businessmen who have run off to India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Middle – East and Western nations to escape being victimised.

The irony is that this slow strangulation is not being done by Sinhala mobs but by main three Pro-Rajapaksa paramilitary Groups:

1. Karuna,
2. Pillayan,
3. Douglas D.

The actual abductions are generally done by the Karuna or Douglas D group or in a few cases by both. There is close collaboration by sections of the Police and armed forces and intelligence personnel. Some top “security” guy is usually at hand to help out if something goes wrong.

It is also believed that a percentage of the ill – gained loot is given to these sections. In some instances the Tamil groups pay “bribes” to get things done. There is corruption or collaboration by the Police or Armed forces in this sordid activity.

What is frightening about this racket is suspected connivance and condonement at very high levels. At least one cabinet minister has demanded and received money for the release of abducted persons. There are also instances of the families and relatives of abducted persons obtaining their releases through contacts at very, very high levels of Government. It is said that the only sure guarantee of getting one released is to gain the sympathy of family members of a powerful, political dynasty.
