(PORTLAND, OR) - OK, so you are asking yourself, what do they know? I didn't know all of the details myself. I originally posted an article in Salem-News.com, Nausea of Pregnancy, Marijuana Vs. Antiemitics, Marijuana Wins Hands Down! I assumed this might get a lot of reader attention, but after five days there were not as many responses as we would have expected. Many of my stories have had thousands of Facebook shares and tens of thousands of visitors. I decided that there was something that I did not know about women and marijuana. One thing I did know, was that about one third of my medical marijuana patients were women, but the largest group of patients, about 70% overall, wanted and used medical marijuana for severe and/or chronic pain, and that was usually for on the job injuries. Few women have such injuries. I scurried to my computer to get straightened out. I tried to punch up marijuana and women and I found about ten pages indicating about 100 articles, but when I tried to punch up specific articles, a sign came up in bold letters and only one article showed up. It was called Specific Issues for Marijuana and Women, which turned out to be a whole bunch of alleged facts about how bad marijuana was in that it "dried up" their yin and blood and recommended qi gong, and herbal therapy but left out marijuana. After wrestling my computer to the floor and choking it, it finally produced articles from NORML including NORML Women's Alliance and NORML Women in the News which produced several pages of stories about how wonderful marijuana was which included one about nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. I recommend this site to everybody, male or female. I finally did get the computer subdued and I found, Green Queens, the Leading Ladies of Marijuana. It gave names of many prominent ladies advocating marijuana. I also found Women and the Effort to Legalize Cannabis in California. It also gave names. Then I found Women for Marijuana on Facebook, then I found, What Percentage of American Women Use Marijuana?. The brief answer astonished me, 71% of women in the U.S. use pot according to this information from Wiki Answers. This floored me. There must be a whole bunch of closet users. The next one was, Smart Women Smoke More Weed: Its Science with 5,600 'likes'. The real surprise was The Top 11 Women of Weed. The first one was Queen Victoria who first used marijuana about 1840 for her 11 pregnancies. It also pointed out Alice B. Toklas, inventor of Brownies, Marianne from Gilligan's Island, Barbara Streisand, Hillary Clinton (Yes!), Margaret Mead, Bessie Smith (Queen of the Blues), and The Hollywood Girlz, Valerie Corral, Ladie Buttercup and an otherwise unknown Deb who is/was a friend of the author Steve Elliot. I was in the hospital last week for surgery. Most of the nurses knew that I was "the Pot Doctor" and we prattled about it. I asked one of the newly graduated nurses, what is the best medicine for hyperemesis gravidarium, the medical term for nausea of pregnancy. She knocked me back on my heels, her answer was --- "Marijuana of course". I tried the same question on an older nurse --- same answer! Queen Victoria used marijuana for menstrual cramps, nausea of pregnancy and obstetrics. The nurses must have known this!
Got a question or comment for Dr. Leveque? More information on the history of Dr. Leveque can be found in his book, General Patton's Dogface Soldier of WWII about his own experiences "from a foxhole". If you are a World War II history buff, you don't want to miss it. Watch for more streaming video question and answer segments about medical marijuana with Bonnie King and Dr. Phil Leveque. Sadly, nurses lose their ability to work and I have also known mothers lose custody of their babies when StateBoard of Nursing or Children's Services find out. Some naive moms set themselves up for custodial interference by admitting marijuana use to their doctor or midwife. I am certain of these things, as an OBNurse I witness both.
